this hike was a suggestion from @lindaann - thank you!
met claud at the triangle a little after 0800
alta to the ridgeline, east along the ridgeline including up and over star peak
we then continued east on hau'pal trail to the connector, finishing on max delta
fun loop, might be better to go the opposite direction another time
claud liked the views from the ridgeline

1st trip
We started at the Trailhead Parking at the San Juan Road Gate, where the Steven Mather Drive ends and the Telegraph Pass Road starts heading up the hill. There is usually ample parking at this trailhead.

We hiked up the Alta trail to its intersection with the Hau’Pal Loop trail, then headed west along the ridge. From this ridge, the views are tremendous to the north across Phoenix and Glendale, with a panorama from the White Tank Mountains to the west, the city peaks of Shaw Butte, North Mountain, Piestewa, and Camelback, with the mountains of Cave Creek in the background, sweeping all the way to the Four Peaks in the east. The ridge is challenging walking, up and down, sometimes steeply.

The sounds of Shooting at the Phoenix Rod and Gun Club and the Phoenix Police Academy just below on Olney Ave. are significant on a Saturday morning. From this high viewpoint, it seems like the Western Canal runs along the surface and suddenly disappears at Dobbins Road, but it actually continues westward, in smaller canals.

An hour into our hike, we encountered the trail heading down to the 19th Ave Trailhead. It was marked Hau’Pal loop trail. From that intersection, the Hau’Pal Loop seems to head both east and west along the ridge and north down to 19th Ave. I was hoping to write a current guide of the Hau’Pal, but it will have to wait until I can hike the rest of its branches.

The trail is rugged, but the views are fantastic. It’s a knife edge ridge so you see north to the Phoenix panorama and south into the park. Looking down, one could see that the 19th Ave. parking lot is full, and cars come in circling, looking for spots. 19th Ave. is indicated “No Parking,” but there is side street parking a quarter mile away at Lodge Drive by the T-Bone Steakhouse. At times, a little scrambling is necessary.

About 2 hours into our hike, the trail switchbacks sharply off the ridge, down to its intersection with the Crosscut Trail. That intersection indicates the Crosscut goes east and south, while the Hau’Pal heads north toward the 19th Ave. trailhead. HAZ shows the trail to the right and left as tha Ma Ha Tuak Trail, but another trail (Link) now has that name. The printable trail map provided on the City of Phoenix site is pretty useless here. We followed the Crosscut Trail over to corrals where it intersected the Ranger Trail and continued a short distance to the Holdout Loop Trail. The Crosscut Trail continues east from that junction, which doesn’t match any maps, but it is a popular horseback trail.

We followed the east branch of the Hideout Loop Trail intending to follow an old HAZ route indicating an intersection with the Las Lomitas Trail, but that trail has been abandoned and obliterated. We eventually picked up the Las Lomitas Trail, and followed it back to the Kiwanis Trailhead, then continued west on the Las Lomitas to its intersection with the Ranger Trail. After a short stint on the Ranger heading south, we came to the start of the Bajada Trail, which took us back to the car. These valley trails seem to experience a lot of renaming and rerouting and cross several now-closed roads and pass several closed picnic areas. I’ll try to get some complete updates to HAZ guides over time.

After parking at Estrella Drive and 43d Ave, I hiked the full length of the Alta Trail, and then returned by the San Juan Road. I even covered the stub of the Alta Trail on the unnamed range west of the San Juan lookout. I stopped at my 3 geocaches on the route to check on their health. Ran into lots of really nice people as well.

Hike #3 of 5 of PHX5 Phoenix Summit Challenge. Hike the Alta Trail from the Bike Hub to the ridge line which served as the "summit" for this summit challenge hike. We would have started earlier, but there were only two vans shuttling folks from the Activity Center parking lot to the trailheads and we had to wait for our ride. Hike was good. There's no shade on the eastern end of the Alta Trail so it was a little warm.

Posted a Meetup for a potentially rainy day. Sign ups were slow till the forecast became favorable. Hit the 10 max out. Half actually showed. Nothing shocking there. 🤷‍♂️

Hike got off to a very rocky start as two participants started screaming at each other. SMH So we took National Trail-Bajada-Alta. Alta is where it gets steeper with switchbacks.

We then took a social trail to a side viewpoint. Next was the peak. Nice lil bonus challenge. After that, it was mostly chill. A couple of those who came out were complaining it was a bit hot. This was my return to PHX.

Forecast was for another cool-ish weekend day, so I took advantage of it. Did the same 20 mile loop trail as last weekend, but this time did it counter-clockwise which should have been easier. The route started at Bursera trailhead heading toward Lost Ranch. Took the Gila Trail eastward this time to where it meets National Trail. Took National east down the hill, then Kiwanis Trail. Then Las Lomitas to Max Delta.

After a short rest and a snack at the Bike Hub at the "Y". Then up and over the Alta Trail. On Alta I started noticing that my brand new boots that I was breaking in didn't fit as well as I thought they would in the store. Not great. Still another 15 miles to go. Hopefully it won't be too bad (my feet were in pain for the last 5 or 6 miles :( - not fun). Ate my lunch at the San Juan lookout, then headed north to Ma Ha Tuak Perimeter trail. There was a nice breeze that kept it cool and comfortable. As the trail got closer to the 202 freeway that breeze turned into a stiff headwind that tried to take my hat. All day there were times with no wind when it was hot, and strong wind when it felt cold. On average it was pretty comfortable.

From the Perimeter Trail to National Trail to Gila Trail and then back. This time I hiked the entire length of the Gila Trail starting from the middle to the east end, and from the west end back to the middle. There are shorter ways to hike Gila end to end, but none of then are real short since neither end of the trail is at a trailhead.

I wanted to get in some distance this weekend. I was going to drive north for cooler weather, but Saturday morning was cool in Phoenix so I decided to save a couple hours driving each way and hike South Mountain. I started at the Bursera trailhead as usual toward Lost Ranch. Decided to take Gila and check out the new Western end of the Gila trail that I haven't been on yet.

First thing I have to say is that it felt great walking on well maintained trails. Last weekend's hike in Prescott was slow and steep and tiring. This was the exact opposite. The trail was well marked. When I reached the junction of Gila and Bursera there was a post pointing to the new section of Gila trail. It gently climbed up the hill heading west. Then at the ridge line it went down the other side with long, easy switchbacks. Well done South Mountain! They could have saved a lot of distance by taking the shortest route straight down the slope, but instead made a long, easy switchback which kept the slope gentle.

Gila trail ends at National where National crosses the the big wash at the bottom of the hill. My plan was to flow National to San Juan lookout and take Alta Trail. Along the way I saw a sign for Ma Hua Tauk Perimeter Trail. I know that goes near San Juan and I had never hikes it so I turned of National and followed it. It started heading west toward the casino and goes past a number of houses just east of the 202 that are hidden from view on the freeway by the sound wall. The trail runs above and parallel to the 202 for a while and the traffic noise is VERY LOUD! I couldn't even hear Route Scout announcements. Once the trail turns east the freeway noise faded.

Got to San Juan and rested for a few minutes at the lookout. Then headed up Alta Trail to the Y. Then Max Delta to Las Lomitas. To another break near the Kiwanis trailhead. Then up Kiwanis to National to Gila. I took the old Pyramid Trail back to the start. In retrospect I should have stayed on Gila where it branches off so that I could have done the full length of Gila. But phone battery was dying and I didn't want to lose the end of the route recording.

South mountain has been doing a great job maintaining the trails and making them easy to walk on.

Kelly wanted to hike the over and back on Alta again. The newish parking area and trailhead are a big improvement over parking in the triangle and hiking Bajada to reach Alta.
Nice sunrise. Temps were very comfortable. Lots of shade on the back side in the morning.
We dug around a bit looking for the benchmark on Maricopa peak. No luck. Saw a mangy coyote.
Good hike. Thanks Kelly! :)

In all my life I had not previously found the desire to walk the MHT perimeter trail. I was pleasantly surprised to start, but interest did wane a bit at the west end, which seems to be true for a few other trails in this preserve.

A trail that is not true for is Alta, which stays spicy all the way to the end, and is actually a quite enjoyable track the whole length. I didn't drop down to its eastern terminus today though, staying on the ridgeline all the way to a juicy steak back to the start.

It was a pleasant temperature and the visibility was outstanding. I passed 8 other hikers in total, which is definitely a change from my normal experiences on the south South range.

I've wanted to hike the full length of National Trail as an out-and-back for a while but had been looking for an open day with cooler temps, and today checked both boxes. I started from Pima Canyon TH by flashlight just after 5AM, and the petrichor was almost overwhelming after the rain yesterday, and trail conditions were in the damp-to-moist range over the first few miles. Nice city views, then even nicer sunrise views as I passed Buena Vista Lookout.

Not too many people out yet around Telegraph Pass, and I passed a few mines and then took a food/water break and shed a layer on Goat Hill at ~7:30AM. The weather was perfect for long hike, and I could still see my breath while I was up there. I'd never been west of Goat, so that was all uncharted territory as I continued west on National and lost a lot of elevation along the way. That side of SoMo is quieter but less interesting once it leaves the Gila Range...nice views of the Estrellas, but also the 202 and the casino.

I hit the west end of National at San Juan Lookout at 9AM and continued down toward the road, then came back and took another food/water break near the shelter. It was still early and I was feeling good, so I started up Alta to visit Maricopa Peak, the high point in the Hawk Tuah range. That was a steady gain all the way up, and I took a longer food/water break on top and enjoyed the views. I noticed two reference marks up there but couldn't find a benchmark...probably stolen.

Then the long hike back, down Alta and east on the full length of National. The stretch going back up to Goat Hill felt long and steep, and I shed the final extra layer around mile 23. I had to dodge more people near Telegraph, then the trails were quieter again. I took a final break near Buena Vista Lookout, then finished it off, getting back to the starting point just before 3PM.

Fun day seeing some new terrain on the west side of SoMo and getting reacquainted with the tail end of my playlist with the longer day :). The high temp was ~65°, about as nice as it'll get this time of year for a long SoMo hike. This exceeded my previous longest hike by 10+ miles, but I felt good and didn't have any cramping...carried 223oz of liquids, drank a little over 150oz. The storms yesterday left Four Peaks and various ranges covered in snow...I really wished I'd brought a real camera to get better pictures--it's tempting to go back out tomorrow just for that.

Today, I hiked the first & last third of Hau’Pal; plus bits of Alta, Bajada, Max Delta and Crosscut.

T-Bone no longer exists: It is being remediated. Same with most of Warrior.

If you are tempted to use the trailhead on 19th Ave. -- instead of Vista or San Juan -- don't drive straight down 19th Ave. For one, it gets medieval between I-10 and I-17, but worse is the at grade RR xing at Lower Buckeye. Ugh. Fifteen minute delay while they shuffled cars. Instead, take 7th Ave., then bop over to 19th on Southern.

Normally, I like a bit of warmup before a climb starts, but Hau'Pal heads straight up. Trail's in good shape with some step-ups. At the top, Hau'Pal splits left & down. I went right, along the ridgeline.

Alta was in its usual good shape, though there were a few eroded spots. (Obviously from previous monsoons ...) Halfway down, I ate lunch at the "stone chair".

On sat view, the San Juan triangle is still unfinished. In reality ... still unfinished. Which may explain why I saw tissues dotted throughout my day. 😑

If you hear shooting, no worries: That is the police academy, ~⅔ mile away.

On the way home, I stopped at Mickey D's. No shamrock shake!? 🤷🏻‍♂️

I had planned to hike in the morning, but she-who reminded me of some honey dos that had to be done first. Oh well, I guess no hiking. I finished my tasks, grabbed my boots and backpack and headed off to the trailhead. It's been years since I lasted hiked Alta and now with the 202 I can get to the trailhead in just 15 minutes. I parked on the dirt part of Estrella at about 2:10 which gave me 4 hours to hike to the other end of Alta and back before sunset. That should be enough time, right? Only a couple other cars there, probably because it's Superbowl Sunday.

Some of the ocotillo were in bloom with little bright red flowers at the end of their bare thorny stems. I saw only one other hiker on the trail, and that was right at the high point. He said that I was the third person he saw that day and usually he doesn't see anyone else. We then continued on our separate ways. I was keeping an eye on the clock and trying to make good speed. The climb up to the high point is steep and I couldn't go very fast, but after that it was mostly downhill.

I remembered to look for the crested saguaro on the way down, but there were just some saguaro sticks where it used to stand. Not really surprising because it looked in bad shape the last time I hiked Alta. Oh well. It was cool to see back in the day.

The Eastern trailhead for Alta has been relocated to the "Y" which is a lot better than having to hike a ways on Bajada and then cross the road to get to it. Definitely an improvement. The trail in general was in good shape everywhere, but there are still a couple of tricky switchbacks where you have to cross sections of steep pointy rocks. Nothing too difficult, and at least they're short.

My legs felt it on the climb up on the way back. I made ok time, but not fast enough to get me back by sundown. I still had a good mile to go at sunset, but at least I was past all the steep stuff. There was sufficient twilight that I never needed to break out the headlamp, but it was pretty dark by the time I got in my car. A nice peaceful hike with lots of solitude.

First time at the new(ish?) Alta Trailhead, nice cruise up to the ridgeline and back. Very windy and the air quality wasn't great. Been wanting to do this one for a while - always stare at it when I'm driving down the mountain.

Haven't done an over and back on Alta in five years. Nice and cool. Only one other hiker out taking sunrise pics with a nice camera. No bees. Very dry out there. Good workout hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

Not too shabby of a hike completed three weeks post appendectomy. Well organized, fun romp but likely one and done for this circuit. I was happy to have Kriket along for company on summits 2, 4 & 7. Dreamy Draw start sixteenth of 104 finishers. 8:55:44 total time.

Phoenix 7 Summit Challenge (2nd time): Begin at 0500, and complete 7 hikes for a total of 22.8 miles with AEG of 5600 feet within 12 hours.

1) Sidewinder to Ridgeback Overlook (2.85 miles, 483 feet AEG, 44 minutes): Began at 0520. Many people had started at 0430, and a number of them were finishing as I was starting. Completely dark except for the headlamps. Flat for almost a mile, then a nice ascent to the peak, then back down. Nice warmup, fun.

2) Lookout Mountain Summit (2.89 miles, 640 feet AEG, 53 minutes): Flat / mediocre for the first mile, then more interesting after that as the slope increased. The last 200m consisted of light scrambling to reach the peak. This was fun.

3) VOAZ peak from Dreamy Draw Trailhead (3.14 miles, 537 feet AEG, 52 minutes): First 200m on concrete walkway. Some nice views of the surrounding peaks. The official route was not marked, and there were multiple forks, so there was occasional confusion about which way to go, but we figured it out. This felt a lot shorter than it was, and felt like we reached the "peak" quickly. This was fun too.

4) Piestewa Peak (2.33 miles, 1151 feet AEG, 84 minutes): Better than last year. Just kept climbing up, stopped at the top for about 5 minutes. My knees were feeling it on the way down. This area was supposed to be closed off for the event, and parking was no problem, but there were still many people on the trail.

5) Las Lomitas Trail to Ranger Summit (3.62 miles, 940 feet AEG, 74 minutes): Las Lomitas trail was boring. Ranger Trail became interesting with decent views after it crossed the road and began climbing. There were great views at the top. Made some new friends on this one.

6) Alta Trail (3.28 miles, 786 feet AEG, 72 minutes): The official starting point was not at the trailhead but further back on the road. This one had a number of switchbacks, and felt a LOT longer than it actually was. The views were decent.

7) Holbert Trail (4.65 miles, 991 feet AEG, 126 minutes): This one was fun, with good views along the way, some mini scrambling, and a lot of people (many of whom were doing the 4 or 5 summit challenge). Good vibes all around.

There was also a total of over 2 hours of driving between trailheads. The sky was overcast most of the day. Overall a fun day and a good challenge. Hamstrings were pretty sore at the end. Spent about 10 minutes at the festival afterward, enough to pick up our free food/drink, then head back home to the shower and hot tub.
