Chumley and I left the valley at 4:45AM headed for Madera Canyon, and we were on the trail before 7AM with comfortable temps in the low 70s and some stray clouds hanging around Wrightson. There were more cars in the lot than expected, but the trails were surprisingly quiet. Chums had drawn up a loop with a variety of peaks we could decide to add on as we went, and we started clockwise with a short stint on Super Trail before starting the steep climb up Pipeline/Kent Spring Trails.

Lots of shade on the way up, and Sylvester Spring had a full spring box and a steady flow of water from the pipes. We passed a group of three near Kent Spring that warned us about unmaintained trails and some bushwhacking on our route, but we never found that to be the case. The wind picked up as we approached Shovel Saddle, and we went out to an overlook nearby before continuing on to McCleary, the first peak of the day and a new one for both of us. There was a good social trail with minimal brush all the way, and with some minor scrambling, we were on top. The register had quite a few HAZ names (including some repeat entries), and we added ours before taking off.

Next up was Peak 8853 (88 Mac), and we decided to take a direct shot up the steep north side rather than circling around on Four Springs/Crest Trails and approaching from the flatter E/SE side. The flat summit was covered in dry grass, and we found another register up there (with entries back to 1993), took a short break, then followed the ridge down to Crest and walked ~10 yards on the trail before leaving it to start the climb up to the unnamed peak that Chumley had seen referred to as Pine somewhere. Surprise--another register, which referred to it as "Ridgepoint 9040".

We scrambled down the SE side and continued along the ridgeline over to Rice Peak (another register there), then stayed mostly off-trail along the ridge over to Ian, where we took another break. The register I'd placed in 2023 was next to a redundant second register, which we consolidated into one jar before heading down to Crest Trail. The stretch of peaks along that ridgeline was a lot of fun, with nice views of Wrightson and Hopkins and some continued clouds near the summit.

We saw one group leaving Baldy Saddle on our way down, and we passed another taking a break there, then had solitude all the way up to and on top of Wrightson, making that my first visit to the peak that wasn't crowded with people. There were some strong wind gusts on the way up, but it was calmer and very comfortable on top. We took a longer break at the summit and talked about our options to finish off the loop, ultimately deciding on the longer return with a hike up to Josephine Peak.

We enjoyed the easy on-trail hiking down to Riley Saddle, then a steep, brushy half mile up to Josephine Peak involved a lot of loose footing near the summit. We took another break at the top and added our names to yet another register, then headed back down to Riley Saddle, taking a slightly more direct route down with some controlled sliding. From there, it was all downhill trail miles, and we made good time with one more break at Josephine Saddle before closing the loop on Old Baldy Trail back to a much emptier parking lot.

Enjoyable day, and by far the longest hike I've done in the Wrightson area. Great weather, some interesting clouds, and a fun mix of on- and off-trail with a combination of familiar and new areas. We ended up hiking to a total of seven peaks along that loop, completing the "Seven Rita Challenge" that isn't really a thing...or wasn't until today. I guess the logical next challenge is the Nine Rita with the addition of Jack and Hopkins :). This was the first time I've seen seven registers in one day, or double digits if we count the repeat registers on some of those peaks...though the definition of "peak" has to be used loosely for some of those. Regardless, I'm lucky I didn't get a hand cramp from signing so many. On the way home, we concluded a fun day with a stop at the DQ near Picacho for some dipped cones in honor of JJ.

The Seven Rita Challenge sounds like it might involve a lot of tequila, so I opted for a different name.

Summits north to south along the range starting with McCleary, 88 Mac, Pine, Rice, Ian, Wrightson, and Josephine. I was pushing to add Jack and Hopkins, but apparently 10s had reached his 10-day aeg and mileage goals already, so we headed back down via Old Baldy and called it a day a little early.

Other than McCleary I don't know if the other peaks have names, why they're considered peaks at all, or why they have the colloquial names that they have. But the names show up on triplogs here from time to time, so somebody seems to have invented something at some point.

All told, there were 7 bumps. Each had at least 2 registers. Some were signed by the same people. Repeatedly. Some had witty musings. Some had politics. Some had less witty musings about political musings. Others had a name and a date; a novel concept.

McCleary: With the upper lot surprisingly full at our pre-7am start, we decided to avoid the early Baldy crowd and head north first. Didn't realize Pipeline wouldn't be marked and missed the turn by a few yards before correcting. Sylvester Spring was full of clear, cold water, and producing a surprising quart+/min. This drainage was surprisingly pleasant with some monster old Sycamores.

The climb up to Kent Spring along the 157 was wake-me-up steep. Early morning shade and temps still in the 50s was helpful, but there was still some sweat and burn. A trio of hikers were resting at the very dry Kent Spring, and would be our only biped sighting until afternoon.

Four Springs Trail might be the nicest in the range. What a treat! We took a brief breath-catcher and checked out the view from the point just west of Shovel Saddle before continuing on to the saddle at the base of McCleary.

Unsure of what this route would be like, we were pleased to find a reasonably-well worn route up and over to the first of our high-point breaks on the day.

88 Mac: With oddly-named point 8853 next on our list, we scoped the terrain across the saddle and decided to make a direct approach rather than continuing on the trail past Armour Spring and dropping down to the Crest. This is some very steep terrain, climbing about 700 feet in half a mile, but was mostly in a stand of ponderosa and some nicely spaced scrub oak.

Pine: From 88 Mac we continued south along the Rita ridgeline toward the next highpoint, briefly clipping the Crest Trail for a few yards near the saddle between the two. This ascent was again a bit steep, though only about 400 feet. Now on the east side of the crest, the mid-June sun was baking down on us, but the forecasted strong wind kept the low-70s temp feeling like the low 70s!

Rice: Next up was Rice, which after dropping down a bit we overshot on the climb back up. Here we found our 12th glass jar on the day, and I continued to add to my collection of business cards. Where's JJ's Amex when you need it?

Ian: Next up was Ian, which involved another slight overshoot after dropping down to the Crest Trail and cutting through a nice grove of post-fire aspen growth. This one seems to get a little more visitation, and might qualify as an actual peak by those list sites. But there was no sign of a defined route or cairns to mark the trail exit. No matter, this area is not well-vegitated and travel is not obstructed.

Wrightson: After discussing making a direct assault on Baldy, we opted instead for the traditional route via the trail, passing by a pair of hikers taking a break at the saddle. My thermometer sat in the sun for a bit and the temp briefly notched 80 before returning to 73 when shaded. A fierce gust of wind hit us on the switchbacks below the peak, but the summit itself had only a light breeze.

Josephine: While snacking on Wrightson, I covered the descent options and while I normally wouldn't consider the Super Loop on a sunny summer day, the breeze was doing good work negating the sun, so we opted to head down around the backside to hit up Josephine too. I was quickly reminded what an awful experience this is, snaking through prickly brush and then trying to find the best of the undefined routes that make the final steep loose climb to the summit.

Here, I finished the last of my water, taking time to cool off in the wind. Carrying a 5th liter today would have been helpful. Perhaps the strong wind and subsequent evaporation was a factor in the miscalculation today? Heading off the peak we found a better route. Or at least it was better going downhill. I'm going to cross this one off my list for a while.

The traverse around to Josephine Saddle went quickly, but was also the first time on the day that it was a little bit warm in the sun. Luckily, the breeze kicked up and some clouds provided occasional shade. After a quick snack and decision to skip Jack and Hopkins we made quick work going down Old Baldy, passing by other humans number 6 and 7 before arriving back at the now-empty parking lot. The 84 temp at Madera quickly headed to 100 as we reached Green Valley.

The big day necessitated a DQ stop at Picacho on the way home, and reminded me why JJ does this, and questioned why I don't do it more!

Fun day. I would do this again, but not with Josephine. Maybe Jack and Carrie Nation instead though.

Nice loop to both Wrightson and Ian with the Desperados. A Twin Spotted was on the trail a couple hundred feet below the summit of Wrightson. It's obvious some bears wander the Cave Canyon Trail.

I heard a report that the trail was pretty clear below Baldy Saddle and knew that the trail to Wrightson above the saddle would not be due to what I can see from home. So, enthused for a Madera hike, Ian it was!

Well, that report was bogus and grossly inaccurate, as there is far more snow than I was told. I am glad I got out, but might not have come down here for that snow depth. I can live with it, but greatly prefer my dry feet on Kimball than the wet feet and soaked shoes I have had the last 2 times I hiked out of Madera Canyon. I am sure it was still better than Wrightson, but given the crowd on that, maybe not?

Snow is 2 to 3 feet thick in spot between Josephine and Baldy Saddles, mostly higher up. There is packed trail in the snow, but it is slippery, sloppy and you will post hole from time to time. Sometimes it melted down, but mostly not. Same on the Crest to Ian. Leaving the trail to the summit was deep. Many feet. It is winter.

No one else signed any of the 3 registers on Ian, since my Christmas summit. It did appear that people had been up, as the rocks were moved off the 3 jars, and I don't remember leaving the plastic jar empty. I signed all 3 today, again. Why not?

Lots of flowing water lower down.

I actually set out for 8853 intending to go up and down the 4 Springs Trail and through Shovel and Pine Saddles. When it came time to head down from Pine Saddle, I wanted more, so since the sections of the Crest between Pine and Baldy Saddles are my favorite, I started up the Crest. Well, since I was passing by Mt Ian and it was early enough, and it's just right off the trail, I ended up summiting Mt Ian, too. What a nice day.

A little snow remains on the Crest trail, hard packed and icy. My expectation is the switchbacks up Wrightson are, too.

Gorgeous day. Merry Christmas.

Did the loop counterclockwise along with both Ian and Rice. Ian is easier to access but Rice is a far nicer summit.

We hiked to Wrightson in 2021, so the main destination today was Mt. Ian to check out one of the nearby peaks. It was comfortably in the 60s when we started up Old Baldy, and the trails were pretty quiet. Early wildlife included a lot of acorn woodpeckers hanging out near the bathrooms at the parking lot and a deer in the first mile or two. It felt like we were ascending into early fall up higher on Old Baldy past Josephine Saddle--lots of beautiful yellow leaves.

After the barrage of switchbacks leading up to Baldy Saddle, TBoneKathy waited while I did a quick out-and-back up to Wrightson. It was a lot quieter up there than it was in the summer of 2021 on my last visit, but there was still a group of four sitting up there and more people coming up behind me, so I just took some quick pictures, signed the register, and started back down. With the amount of traffic on Wrightson, the peak really goes through summit registers...the one I signed was a few days old and was already on page #2.

Next up was Ian, and we hiked Crest Trail for ~ half a mile before turning off to the peak. The guide for Ian really oversold the difficulty of the off-trail portion...at first glance, it reads like a half-mile bushwhack, but the peak is only a few hundred feet off the trail, with ~50 feet of elevation gain and a simple scramble up to the top. The peak had quite a few ladybugs, but far from Mazatzal-level quantities. The views of Wrightson and Hopkins were nice, as was the solitude, and we could see specs of hikers up on Wrightson.

[ youtube video ]

I'd brought an empty jar and some paper in case there wasn't already a summit register on Ian. Of course, after initially failing to find one and placing the new one, I found an old register in a well-hidden peanut butter jar. It was a small notebook placed in 2013, with some familiar HAZ names, including those the most recent Ian triplogs from Jim_H and DixieFlyer. The notebook was wrapped in plastic and the lid was on tight, but the notebook was still soggy, so I ended up leaving the new jar up there as well...it's now a two-register summit.

We headed back down to Baldy Saddle, through the switchbacks to Josephine Saddle and decided to take Super Trail back to the parking area. That added about a mile and a half over Old Baldy but offered some new scenery. Overall, a really pleasant day with great weather, some early fall color, and less busy trails than our last visit, probably due to being here in October instead of June.

Strava gave me two extra miles somewhere, so guessing on the exact distance. Pretty crisp this morning and even pulled out a long sleeve shirt at some point. Wildflowers are extreme along Baldy Saddle, get out there and check them.

I arrived at the trailhead having decided to hike Carrie Nation, then head up to Agua Caliente trail. From there I wasn’t sure if I’d turn right or left.

I was greeted by three turkeys at the Old Baldy trailhead. They very reluctantly abdicated the trail as I approached; they let me get quite close.

It was my first time on Carrie Nation. There was water flowing in the creek all the way to the mine. I poked around the old equipment and took some pictures before heading up the ridge.

At Agua Caliente I debated between Wrightson and Pete Mountain. I needed to hop on a phone call at 10, and I knew that cell service was possible near Josephine Saddle as I’d made calls there before, but I had no idea whether it was possible at Pete, so Wrightson it was.

After the call at Josephine Saddle, I decided to take Super to Baldy Saddle. It was a bizarrely cool and overcast day in June so I figured if there was ever a summer’s day to do an exposed trail on a south slope in Arizona, it was today.

Just before Baldy Saddle I passed a couple volunteers doing tread improvements and thanked them for their service.

I had lunch at Baldy Saddle and it was delicious, and the view was great.

Up and down Wrightson was familiar and had the usual parade of hikers. I’d barely seen anyone all day otherwise. There were a lot of flies up there so I didn’t stay long.

The day was still young and I was feeling great so I decided to take the long way down. I popped over to Mt Ian, signed the log, and really enjoyed the view from there. Then I worked my way down the Crest trail to Pine Saddle.

That stretch of the Crest trail alternated between spectacular old growth forest and apocalyptic post-fire landscape in various stages of recovery. There is a lot of deadfall to climb over or under, and still many snags yet to come down.

I took the social trail down to Shovel Saddle. It’s pretty steep with loose rocks and gravel, so it’s definitely not a trail to hurry down.

From there it was Four Springs to the social trail connecting to Rogers Rock and Madera Spring, then down to Pipeline, Super, and the car.

It was a big day. Other than a few birders on Carrie Nation, a group of kids at Josephine Saddle, and the hiker parade on Old Baldy, I saw no one.

Trip down to the Santa Rita, TTR was doing their yearly assault on Mount Wrightson, so a group of us went down to kinda (but not really) join in. My plan was just to do a single Mount Wrightson ascent, and then take a more fun way down. I had decided to book a room in downtown Tucson to shorten the drive in the morning, which means I had a bit of a hangover in the morning (I was aware this would be a risk, and accepted the potential consequences).

The way up was mostly power hiking, although I did jog a few flatter sections so I can call it a "run". Got to the summit in 2 hours and 6 minutes, which was acceptable given the previous evening's activities. Spent a little while at the top, hadn't been up there in a few years, although I think this was about my 5th visit.

Most of the group headed back via Super Trail, but a couple of us decided on a more adventurous route, beginning with a stop at Mount Ian. Overshot it a little; I had thought it was where Rice Peak is, so we had to traverse back along the ridge a bit. Doesn't feel super summitty since it's really the high point of a long ridge, but it does afford nice views of Wrightson, Hopkins, Pete Mtn, Elephant Head, and Madera Canyon.

The rest of the way was pleasant enough - there is a ton of deadfall on Crest Trail, particularly in the burned section. Looks like there was a big blowdown event. Took the shortcut to 4S, on which we only passed one set of hikers. Grabbed some water a Sylvester Spring. All the creeks are still flowing nicely in the lower elevations.

On the connector trail between Kent Spr and Super Trail, of all places, we ran across who turned out to be someone I knew in high school. Unexpected. By the time we got back to the lot, there was someone who was already on his third ascent.

Brian and I left the heat and did this today. Excellent day for it! Snow is melting fast, and a few people were hiking Wrightson. Might do that in a week or two, after the Crest Trail Loop.

Plenty of birds out, and Hermit Thrushes have returned. Also saw an Elegant Trogon right on the trail about half way down from Josephine Saddle. There was a speckled rattle snake near Baldy Saddle.

Water is flowing heavily in a few placces. Bellows Spring is a creek, but the pipe is destroyed so you will need to use the creek to filter.

I have been wanting to hike Mount Ian for some time, and finally decided to get it done. I got the idea for this route from a similar hike that @lindaAnn did a couple of years ago.

Starting from the Cave Canyon TH, I did a CW loop basically going up the Gardner Canyon Trail and coming back down the Cave Canyon Trail. Along the way I did an out-and-back from Baldy Saddle to Mount Wrightson, and then went off-trail from the Crest Trail to and from Mount Ian.

Mount Ian has an amazing view of Mount Wrightson, and I enjoyed taking a lunch break there.

Trails that I hiked on were all in good shape, although the Cave Canyon Trail could stand to have a little trim work done.

The temperature at the TH was 40 when we started and 70 when we returned. There is a decent amount of sun exposure on this hike, and I would not want to hike it if it was any warmer.

I enjoyed this hike, although it is more difficult to get to the TH than it is to start in Madera Canyon.

Got a late start for this 1. Parked in a no parking zone till another spot opened up. Then had to accelerate to catch up to the pair I was meeting there. Passed quite a few people along the way.

They turned around at the Josephine jct so then I sped back up. Was thinking the switchbacks were mostly after the saddle. Faulty memory. Trying to keep a strong pace through those was tough. Pushed through some ice on this 90 degree day in phx.

Tired at the saddle I donned a windbreaker & gloves. Turned left & was treated to phenomenal views from the backside. Short scramble then follow the colorful ridge line to the high point. The previous entry in the registry was 2 months prior by another HAZ regular. 😎

The snow is melting with the warmer temperatures so I was able to hike Mount Ian despite the remaining stretches of ice covering the trail. Bring traction if you prefer, or wait a few more weeks. I came from Florida Canyon, so have no idea of the Baldy conditions.

Probably a one and done for me, as this is a little longer than I care to do routinely and I found Ian to be less of a summit than Wrightson or 8853, and a lot longer than Florida Peak, all of which I might do again this year. Well, Wrightson I definitely will. Best thing about Ian is the view of Wrightson, actually.

Ian isn't a very popular summit on HAZ, but it seems to be for the local hiking clubs. Still, it looked to get only a few groups a year.

Slimmed down a hike I did last year that looped around the crest of the Santa Rita Mountains. Cut McCleary Peak off the route and went counterclockwise. Stuck with Wrightson, Ian, and 88 Mac. Started somewhere round 5am, third car in the parking lot.

Old Baldy to Super instead of Super to Pipeline. Super lengthens the trip up Wrightson, but the hike's better for it. Passed a hiker below Josephine Saddle who I saw at Baldy Saddle after coming down from the summit. Shady and cool until around to the east side of the mountain on Super and from there it was sunny and warm until crossing back over the crest.

Nobody on the summit when I got there, and the views were hazy. Seen it twice, seen it a thousand times, unless it's one of those late autumn mornings after a storm drops an inch of snow on the mountain in the night and the clouds settle below Baldy Saddle and stretch out all the way to the horizon. It was not one of those mornings.

From Wrightson to Ian. Left Crest Trail and climbed up the ridge. Last time I had thought it a better idea to follow the crest itself rather than the Crest Trail from Ian/Mac, but I wanted to get in on the forest below. Crest trail is in pretty good shape, overgrown in some spots.

Mac's an easy summit. From the ridge, it looks like a big hill of rock. But it's a nice open ridge walk with big views of Madera Canyon and the Southern/Southeastern ranges. Went back the way I came and headed down to crest.

Swung around and back over the crest with Four Springs. Shady oaks and open pine forest. I cut away from Four Springs and headed down Kent Springs. I think it's shorter than switchbacking down Super, plus there's water. Sylvester Spring was a blessing with the temperatures reaching into the nineties. Cold, clear water flowing from the spring box.

From Sylvester Spring to the trailhead only saw two more hikers. Trailhead was surprisingly empty considering the Catalina closures.

I had wanted to do the entire Santa Rita crest. I've done all the peaks individually, but never together. Started on the Super Trail to Pipeline to Roger's Rock to Four Springs. Took Four Springs around to the saddle below McCleary. Hiked up McCleary - on the way down was checking out the direct rt to 88mac. Decided it looked doable and hiked straight to 88mac instead of getting on the crest trail. The route was actually really good - not much brush. Very steep, but not bad. Descended to Pine saddle and then hiked the steep slope back up to the crest again. Stayed on the actual crest following the ups and downs to Rice peak and then to Ian. After Ian made a beeline to the crest trail and down to Baldy Saddle. I had planned on Wrightson but was gassed. My partner did it while I napped. Got some energy back on the trail down to Josephine saddle so I suggested we hike out Carrie Nation instead of Old Baldy. Found the steep route off Agua Caliente that takes you to the Carrie Nation mine and then the Carrie nation trail out. Great day and felt harder than the stats - probably because of the off trail portion between McCleary and Ian.

Matt suggested an alternate route to Wrightson, and it was mostly new territory for me, so I was interested. The road in was not too bad, lots of washboard, but generally in good shape. We got started on the Link Trail by around 0745 and quickly started gaining elevation. After about a half mile of Link, we got onto Gardner Canyon Trail and continued the climb. The trail is mostly in decent shape, and easy to follow, but overgrown in some places. Not much shade, but we were early enough in the morning to where it wasn't hot yet.

Once at Super Trail, we headed north and took a short break before heading up to Baldy Saddle. From there, we headed up to Wrightson. We saw 6 hikers between the saddle and summit--the only people we saw all day. Windy at the summit, so we only stayed for a few minutes. High clouds were moving in from the south, offering some welcome shade.

Once back down at the saddle, we continued north on the Crest Trail. Side to Mt Ian, or something near Mt Ian, as I am not sure we made it to the true summit. There seemed to be 3 high points, and we went to the 2 southern ones, but I have a feeling the high point to the north may have been the real summit. Close enough in this case. Continuing north on Crest, it was nice walking through the pines for short stretches.

At Florida Saddle, we headed east on Sawmill towards Florida Peak. The trail is very overgrown and brushy. As we neared the peak, we left the trail and headed up the west side of the peak. Fairly easy off trail hiking, mostly a matter of avoiding manzanita. Views from the summit were limited, but there were rocks to sit on for a snack break. Lots of ladybugs up there. On the way back down, we spotted a bear below us, but my attempt at a picture was a blurry mess. It sauntered off into the trees, not to be seen again.

Once back down at the saddle, we headed down Cave Canyon Trail, which is a gem of a trail. Narrow, but easy to follow, and pleasant scenery the entire way. The creek had water in the lower sections. Parts of this trail reminded me of Miller Canyon in the Huachucas. If I lived in this area, I'd probably spend a lot of time on this trail. Good way to finish out the hike.

Great loop on some lesser used trails. Good to hike with Matt again, and good conversation. Perfect weather for the entire day. It's about a 3 hour drive from Ahwatukee, but well worth it for this loop. Stats are averaged between my Route Scout, my Garmin, and Matt's watch.

A couple of weeks past prime, but Cave Canyon trail was probably very colorful a few weeks ago.

Looking east in Madera Canyon the rock walls and peaks that make up the Santa Rita Crest are just about as imposing as Wrightson itself. I decided to take a tour around it and summit three of its peaks- McCleary, 88 Mac (Peak 8853), and Mount Ian- before ending with Wrightson. Started around 6am and was the first car at the trailhead.

Super to Pipeline there was a gentle flow of water in the creek. Some of the trees down there are just beginning to change color for the fall but are still a while away from some nice color. Passed Roger's Rock and was happy it was just a side show on this hike. Four Springs was a little confusing as trails fork off a number of times, and it's unclear where they go. Trail is faint in spots by Armour Spring, but overall the trails were in good condition.

There is just enough of a trail to make the short climb out onto the ridge and over to McCleary a navigational non-issue. Rocky with a hint of scrambling.

Got onto the Crest Trail and decided to forgo Florida Peak. To have gotten it would have added a decent amount of elevation gain and around 2-3mi. Took Crest to the saddle by Mac, left the trail, and walked up the ridge. Much better ridge walk than McCleary: more open, and more even footing with better views along the way and from the top.

Back onto Crest and it moves down away from the peaks before rejoining them about 1-200ft below Ian's summit on the east side after some switchbacking. Very quick climb up to the top. A small colony of Ladybugs were still holding strong on Mac and Ian. A little bit of scrambling required, and there was no clear use trail from the direction I came, but leaving one existed intermittently.

Decided I couldn't skip Wrightson and the opportunity to look back over the way I came. Views were better with each peak. Shared Wrightson with a few other folks as clouds started to coalesce a few hundred feet above us.

Took Super 'round the mountain and enjoyed the warm sunshine and cold autumn wind. The Upper section of Super is one of my favorite stretches in the range, and yet is so much less trafficked than the lower section. Saw a twin-spotted rattlesnake around Riley Saddle. Wildflowers were moderate on super just above and below Josephine Saddle.

Josephine Saddle down on Super saw four groups of hikers. Evidence of recent bears on Pipeline, Four Springs, Super, and the northern parts of Crest. Temperatures ranged from low 60s to high 70s.
