Years ago we had a dog named T-Bone. One of the first dogs I ever had as an adult and who was with us for far too few years. With his passing I hiked the T-Bone Trail in his memory. Over the years I’ve had quite a few canine companions who have equally been as near and dear to my heart in their own special, quirky way. A few days ago Luna lost her battle with cancer. Once again her passing was far too early. She was only 8 years old. She was a pit mix, who was a fierce defender of our yard. No bird dared nest in one of our trees without getting at least several gruff “woofs”. (I swear you’d think she was part setter). She was a constant companion. No matter where I was she would follow. I could be doing yard work when it was 110 out and she would watch me, somewhat questioningly, from the shade of the porch. On the times we had those epic rain and thunderstorms, she would hang by my side, unfazed by the sounds of Mother Nature. I don’t think I ever had a dog that was so uncaring of what was put in front of her. She loved ALL food. Canine and human. I’m a huge salad lover. So was Luna. Today, my wife and I walked the T-Bone Trail in memory of Luna. Please give your pets a hug and a treat (it doesn’t have to be lettuce) in memory of our lost friend and family member.

The trail was nice.

Hau’pal Loop, Crosscut, Max Delta, Hideout Loop, Las Lomitas, and Ma-Ha-Tuak Perimeter Trails.

Our last time out in South Mountain in the central valley area, we discovered there is a big disconnect between what is signposted on the trails and the available maps. I thought I’d try to sort out what was really going on.

We arrived at the 19th Ave. Trailhead about 7:45 on a Friday morning and got one of the last 2 parking spots. Leaving the lot, we headed up the left fork of the Hau’pal Loop Trail. This is a fairly recent name change for this segment. Some maps call it the T-Bone Loop Trail. The trail climbs steadily south and at about 0.8 mile intersects with the Crosscut Trail. At this intersection, the Hau’pal Loop Trail turns sharply right and heads up the hill, while the Crosscut Trail continues left toward the Big Ramada and straight ahead.

We followed the Crosscut Trail down to its end at an intersection with the Max Delta Trail, about 1.3 miles from the parking lot. We took a right a hundred yards on Max Delta, to find the end of the Las Lomitas Trail, also a relatively new designation for this segment. Las Lomitas crosses the main park road and heads generally southeast. There is no parking here.

We hiked northeast on the Max Delta Trail about ¾ mile, meeting the Crosscut Traill and turning right (southeast) on it. We were now on a route heavily used by horses. In about 0.2 mile we came to some corrals, and the trailhead for the Ranger Trail. There is parking here.

Continuing northeast from the corrals, we quickly came to its intersection with start and finish of the Hideout Loop Trail. This loop appears to have been heavily trafficked by horses in the past, but not recently. Although still signposted, this loop does not appear on any park maps I could find. The Hideout Loop Trail is cute, though, passing through rocks reminiscent of a desert hideout from old westerns.

Leaving the Hideout Loop Trail, we continued northeast on the Crosscut Trail, which drops into a sandy wash and follows the wash, occasionally signposted. This is not a nice walking trail unless you like sand and horse deposits. The trail continues in the wash about 0.9 miles and finally comes out, unmarked, behind the ruins at “Scorpion Gulch” just outside the park main gate. It was not obvious that this was the end of the trail, but we stopped in at the nearby visitor center, and they shared a link to a map they actually maintain, and keep on the wall at the center. Link to the map: https://www.canva.com/design/DAGiZAzjWE ... f0e682ded5

From the visitor center, we headed back southwest on the Las Lomitas Trail. About 0.6 miles, we followed an unnamed connector that heads back to the Crosscut Trail. We then followed the Crosscut Trail up to the Big Ramada, where we found locked restrooms.

Heading out the back of the Big Ramada, we followed the Ma-Ha-Tuak Perimeter Trail back to the 19th Ave. Parking, which by noon was nearly empty.

this hike was a suggestion from @lindaann - thank you!
met claud at the triangle a little after 0800
alta to the ridgeline, east along the ridgeline including up and over star peak
we then continued east on hau'pal trail to the connector, finishing on max delta
fun loop, might be better to go the opposite direction another time
claud liked the views from the ridgeline

Early morning hike at SoMo and a trip down memory lane. I had not done the T-Bone in a while so I thought I would revisit this forgotten and now renamed trail. Not that this was a fantastic trail, but it is kind of sad to think that once the “old-timers” of HAZ fade away (me) and/or the stable rides to the steakhouse ends the purpose of (most) of this trail will be forgotten. I say most, because about half of this trail has been rerouted a couple of times over the years. For a brief time, back in 2019, the T-Bone Trail had temporary signs on sections now signed as the Hau’ Pal and Crosscut Trails. In fact, what is currently listed as the official route for the T-Bone Trail is actually the Hau’ Pal Trail.

The old alignment of the T-Bone Trail takes off from the east end of the 19th Ave. TH. It’s pretty easy to follow and is initially signed as the Ma Ha Tauk Perimeter Trail. It heads due east, sandwiched between homes to the north and the foothills of South Mountain to the south. About .4 miles, you hit a decent sized wash and start to climb a hill that leads to a couple of ramadas. Back in the day, the trail would veer off to the east and go along the lip of the hill, just below the circular paved vista. Now, the trail switchbacks up to the ramadas. At this point it can get kind of confusing. There is a lot of activity at the Ramadas, causing “use” trails and there is a confluence of several trails coming together. However, the legitimate trails do stand out and are signed. The trail wraps around the ramadas and briefly piggybacks with the Crosscut trail, before splitting off from it, crossing a road and then connecting to the Max Delta. This last section is now just signed as a “connector trail” to the Max Delta and is kind of a mixture of old and new. About .1 miles west of the Max Delta, you can see where the TBone Trail use to split off, veering towards the north. That split has been “hillocked” to discourage use and is even now, starting to be reclaimed by the desert.

My plan had been to hike this tattered trail and then continue into the park a create a loop. But as I was taking pictures of the end of the TBone Trail I realized that my Garmin had not tracked any data. So I decided to do a simple in and out of this trail. It worked to my benefit. On the way back I was fortunate enough to see two javelina heading up the slopes. I know this was a poor and rambling description of my memory of the TBone Trail. My apologies to all who bothered to read it.

In all my life I had not previously found the desire to walk the MHT perimeter trail. I was pleasantly surprised to start, but interest did wane a bit at the west end, which seems to be true for a few other trails in this preserve.

A trail that is not true for is Alta, which stays spicy all the way to the end, and is actually a quite enjoyable track the whole length. I didn't drop down to its eastern terminus today though, staying on the ridgeline all the way to a juicy steak back to the start.

It was a pleasant temperature and the visibility was outstanding. I passed 8 other hikers in total, which is definitely a change from my normal experiences on the south South range.

Hike #4 of the PHX5 Phoenix Summit Challenge. Numbers 2 and 3 were easy hikes. This one definitely lived up the the "Challenge" name. Apparently we were supposed to go around the loop counter-clockwise. Most people who read the Hiker's Passport put out by the City knew that. My little group didn't get the memo, and there was crappy signage at the start. It wasn't clear that you need to take a sharp right immediately after the start and make nearly a u-turn to go the right way. Either way it's a steep, challenging trail. I think I like our clockwise route better than the other way, but I'll have to try the other to know for sure.

Trail starts out pretty easy and then starts climbing a bit. The sun finally came out and it felt nice and warm. We turned right to follow the trail up to the ridge line. It was crazy steep. Really hard work! A tough slog up to the ridge line. The ridge line still climbed fairly steeply, but not nearly as bad as the stretch of trail getting to the ridge. There were some exposed places along the ridge where the ground dropped off steeply on both sides which made it interesting. We ran into a couple members of our group along the ridge line near the top who were hiking the loop counter-clockwise. They advised us to turn around and go down the way we came up because of the steepness of the trail they had just taken.

We reached the summit at the trail junction and decided to keep going clockwise. It wasn't bad and we were glad that we ignored the advice.

Of all the different hikes I've done on Phoenix Summit Challenges over the years this one was the most challenging. Better signage would have been nice.

Nice day for a walk. Sunshine broke through the storm clouds and lit up The Valley, which was exceptionally clear after the rain.

Mid day hike at SoMo. Did a loop I did a few weeks ago. Started from the 19th Ave. TH. Went in on the T-bone. Connected to the Max Delta and took that out to the Bajada. Turned around and then connected to the Crosscut and the Hau’Pal (lower segment) to close the loop. Nice trail. Decent elevation change for light jogging. Forgot my knee braces so I was a little slower on the declines. Weather was nice, though not much of a breeze today. Wildlife…one lone quail. Light traffic today. Encountered 5 hikers.

met john at ranger trailhead at 0630, since san juan road wasn't open
south mountain park website indicated that it should have been but maybe it hasn't been since the triangle destruction
the new parking area will be pretty nice
the main objective was maricopa peak
ranger and bajada to alta, which has been rerouted from the new parking area
checked out some mines along alta
up the use trail to maricopa peak
found the benchmark once, but couldn't find it today
there is a brand new summit register on the peak
heading down, we considered the over and back, deciding against it given the extra credit
on the return, we continued on the ridgeline to star peak
down the old warrior trail aka t-bone aka hau'pal loop
connector trail to max delta and back to ranger
double digits and a different combo
breakfast burritos at carolina's after
good times, thanks john :)

Alta trail to Maricopa Peak was our main objective for the day. We had to start from the Ranger trail since there was nowhere to park at the triangle and San Juan was falsely advertised as open.
Instead of an over and back we decided to hit Star Peak then descend via the "new" Warrior trail which is now named Hua'Pal.
We took the Connecter trail from the Hua'Pal loop to the Max Delta then made our way back to the Ranger trail which we started from.
Interesting hike on some new trails for me. Thanks Kelly! :)

Short hike with wife. Did the shortest loop possible on the T-bone, climbing the ridge line at the ramadas. Did the loop going CCW. No Garmin so I’m guessing on the mileage. Beautiful weather!

Got a mid morning hike at SoMo. Did an “oldie but a goodie” though the names have changed. Started from the 19th Ave TH. Went in on the TBone, then Max Delta and then back on the Ma HaTauk. The TBone is now called the Ma Ha Tauk Perimeter trail. The configuration of the trail changed a little as it wraps around the ramadas, but otherwise remains the same. The trail briefly piggybacks with the Crosscut trail, before splitting off from it, crossing a road and then connecting to the Max Delta. Along this back end, there are still posts without signage, so I am hesitant to say this is the “final draft” for this trail. It’s been like this for over a year now, so who knows….? Next took the Max Delta out to where it ends with the Bajada. This section of the trail hasn’t changed at all, nor has its name :) . What has changed is where the Max Delta use to end and connect to the Bajada Trail. There is major construction occurring where that intersection use to exist. (I’m guessing parking). I imagine that the Bajada has been rerouted to the east, but you are going to have to search for the connection. Had to backtrack a little to reach what was once called the Ma Ha Tauk. This part of the trail has now been renamed the Crosscut. The starting point for this trail has moved a little. But it is well signed and hard to miss. It’s actually kind of difficult to see where the trail use to start. The trail does a little climbing, maybe 30ft, before wrapping itself along the contours of the lower slopes. There use to be quite a few user trails that crisscrossed this area, but they have all been signed off (closed for revegetation) and surprisingly those signs seem to be working. As the trail comes around to the northern side of the mountain, there is a trail intersection that is not very well marked. The Crosscut will turn off to the right and head down toward the ramadas. But to close the loop you’ll want to go straight. Doing so will put you on the Hau’ Pal trail. This last stretch is very easy to follow. It was given a “facelift” several years ago, so the route has changed a little, but the trail is fresh and wide and there is little doubt on getting back to the TH. Nice loop. Had the trails to myself, except for one hiker at the end. No wildlife.

Lily and I did a horseback ride from Ponderosa Stables to the T-Bone steakhouse for dinner then rode back. You have to be 13 for this ride and Lily turned 13 a couple weeks ago so it was a go! There were only 6 guest riders in our group and 3 ranch hands. It made for a fun group. Trails were in good shape. We started around 6pm with cloud cover and it wasn't as hot as I thought it would be. The food at the steakhouse was pricey but good! We watched the sunset from our table which was cool. We rode back with not much moonlight. Our first time riding at night. Scared at first but it turned out to be fun. A nice breeze and seeing the ranch hands silhouettes on their horses in the dim light was kind of cool. The horses know their way around. Lily's horse trotted a few time which she gets a kick out of. A very enjoyable outing with my granddaughter!! Thanks Lily !! Like HAZ, you rock!!

A quick hike in the morning with a colleague. New favorite loop of mine, I'll do this one again. The Alta going up from Bajada is a stellar trial. T-bone is probably easier going up than it is going down but I like this trail too. Temps were getting warm by 8ish, finished up right before 9am, didn't see very many people per the usual.
