Early morning hike in the Phoenix Mountains. The plan was to do the 1E Valley View hike, but I always seem to struggle with identifying this trail. Case in point, I missed it on this hike. Went right around it…. :? When I got home, I looked at the trail locations and realized my mistake. Hopefully I’ll be able to remember the trail location going forward.

I ended up only doing a portion of the 1D trail, but that was more than the 1E. Got to the Dreamy Draw TH around 5am. I had to wait for the gate to open and was surprised to see they still open the gates manually. The design of the gate would indicate that if I ever looked closely. I’d just assumed that they had transitioned with all the other parks. Took some “use” trails to get to the Irregualr Link and then took the Perl Charles down to the 1D. If I had gone 50 yards further I would have been the 1E. Oh, so close. I was only on the 1D for a short time before following 1 of 3 “use” trails that climb up the west side of the valley. (There is a fourth trail that exits the west side of the valley and that is the signed Perl Charles Trail). At one point in time, I’ve done all these use trails and this one is my favorite. It takes off right from that “3 tiered wall” mentioned in the 1E Trail and avoids another minor valley that is just west of the valley you climb out of. I followed the “use” trails to reconnect to the Perl Charles and used that to get back towards the TH. Following the Charles Trail I noticed that it’s route has changed slightly from its previous incarnation as you get closer to the TH. It’s possible the posts that I was seeing with the old decals were part of a trail that lead TO the Perl Charles. I know the park did not do a very good job of differentiating this back in the day. Their current signage does a much better job of indicating when a trail leads to an actual named trail.

Didn’t accomplish what I wanted, it still a nice hike. More humid today than the previous day, but there was an intermittent breeze which helped. Encountered 8 hikers and 2 bikers. No wildlife..

An easy morning PMP hike with Dese to complete all my undone sections of the Perl Charles and a few other trails. The hiking alongside SR51 was annoyingly noisy and it smelled of vehicular exhaust, but the inner (eastern) sections of the loop were better.

I was planning to head up to the Peaks/Flagstaff for some AEG and a solid tune-up hike in advance of an upcoming R2R, but logistics didn’t align—my brother (who’s is also doing R2R with me) had to work. So, I turned to more local options. I hadn’t done Piestewa Peak in years, and had never hiked any of the other trails in the Preserve, so I decided to make a morning of exploring the area. I knew the Peak was essentially a 1-mile stair climber, and I was sure I could find other stuff in the area to climb up and down for the desired AEG. I also needed a longer-ish hike to get a feel for how my new trail runners (Saucony Peregrine 10) would perform over a long distance. And, after a dozen years with my Costco High Sierra daypack, I finally decided to upgrade to a new pack (Osprey Talon 22). So, lots of gear getting a first workout on this hike.

As it was Saturday morning, and the temps had moderated a bit, I expected it to be busy, but somehow still managed to be shocked that every parking slot was filled, with dozens of cars waiting in line by 6 a.m. I ended up parking a half mile away in a neighborhood. No big deal, since I was there to hike and didn’t have a specific destination in mind.

I had planned to start the trip with a couple of ascents to the peak, but after navigating the “Piestewa rush hour” once, I decided to postpone ascent two in favor of some exploring. (As an aside, the diverse cross-section of humanity hiking Piestewa Peak on a Saturday is quite a sight.) As I peeled off onto the circumference trail to the west on my descent, I concluded that I could probably go another several years before deciding to hike Piestewa again.

Once on the circumference trail, I entered into the much more solitary portion of the hike. I passed a few hikers here and there, but had good stretches of alone time as well—especially in places where I followed a use path or climbed up to one of the intermediate summits or ridgelines.

About a third of the way through the hike, I got a text from my brother with a couple of photos and a note saying he decided to get up early and do a quick ascent of ... Piestwwa Peak and the circumference trail!!! :o :o :o I immediately called him and we laughed about the improbable coincidence of us separately deciding last minute to hike the same trail—which neither of us had hiked in many years. In fact, as we compared notes, it’s likely that we passed each other on the summit trail without even recognizing each other. Crazy!

After finishing the call, I continued to wander around the western side trails looking for stuff to climb. : rambo : I found plenty of options and was pleased with how my shoes and pack were performing. I was also happy with my new 3L hydration bladder, as well as the insulation bag I had purchased to keep it cold (a must for me, and truly one of the reasons I kept the High Sierra for so long—its insulated hydration pouch).

Eventually, I exhausted my hydration bladder and was down to a water bottle, so I made my way back to the TH, and refilled a bit for my second ascent.

By that time, the temps had warmed, the masses had cleared, plenty of parking was available, and the trail was much more manageable. That said, I was just grinding out another 1K in elevation and ready to be done for the day.

In the middle of my determined but somewhat unenthusiastic grind, I looked up the trail to see a figure that I immediately recognized—even from a distance, though I had never met him in person before. It was the elusive @joebartels, grinding out a few ascents of his own in his native environment. I flagged him down and introduced myself. We visited for a couple of minutes, and as we parted, I felt a bit of ironic redemption in meeting a fellow "hiking brother" after apparently hiking right by my "actual brother" earlier in the day. Joe indicated that he was planning another ascent, so we would probably pass again on my way down. We did, and I was glad, since I had failed to take a selfie with the legend the first go around. I fixed that on the descent and enjoyed another brief chat about HAZ and my family-focused hiking adventures. I thanked him for the great resource and community which is HAZ and finished out the hike.

Ended up with 4.2K AEG, which was the intended goal for the day, and though I was on top of Piestewa Peak twice, the "summit" experiences on the day for me occurred about half-way up/down, when I made a personal acquaintance with someone I've followed virtually all these years. Thanks again, Joe, for HAZ. : app : It'll probably be another several years before I"m back on Piestewa, but perhaps we'll meet again out in the "wild" someday. :-)

I just walked a mile to the park and Nikki drives right up and parks... lol

Rancid drift is strong on the west side of the circ which I noted a couple months ago too.

Down on Piestewa Basin Trail #1D, cool breeze. Everything is green, heaven esque.

A lot of people out in the Irregular Link vicinity. Far from crowded. Cool to see the rarely used gems getting attention.

Changing back to sandals realized this was my first hike without insoles. Forgot to put them back in yesterday after shaking out pebbles. Always wondered if the 1/16? inch thing was necessary. Probably, but I didn't notice a difference. Perhaps on rougher terrain the foot might slide around. Then again I like my Salomons for their tight yet comfortable fit.

Dismal compared to SoMo. Interesting as the north stretch of the circ was a great wildflower show back in the late 90's.

#1D is a gem. Backside of the circ is nice but #1D on the flip side swings lower so you get a larger mountain backdrop. Awesome little trench ascent on the NE end. Trail designers undoubtedly shake their heads. Luckily too far for 97.821% it's rugged natural cut is safe.

Wed 1:02 pm
Always get a kick out of post-noon good morning greetings. Naturally attributed to my glowing personality that reminds folks of a fresh joyous day.

Wed 1:14 pm
Back to civilization. Brittlebush reappears after very little since leaving the summit trail. Hint of shivering poppies on the #1C sky boardwalk.

easy to erase, could be a checkbox option, holding w/simplicity

I ended up dropping a neighbor at the airport so decided to hike from Dreamy Draw to the summit of Piestewa Peak and back. Fun hike, not too long, and a good weekday jaunt. I try to avoid Piestewa Peak as it is much busier than I prefer and was hoping that it wouldn't be crowded during the week. I was surprised how many people there were but perhaps it was because a lot of schools are on spring break this week; there were a lot of families out.

Met up with some friends at the Dreamy Draw trailhead at half past six. We started off in the dark, working our way towards Piestewa Peak. It's been awhile since any of us had been out this way so we sort of guessed from hazy memories where to go. We actually did well and made it to the Piestewa circumference trail without any backtracking.

As we neared the summit trail, we passed a few people coming down but nothing like the mass of humanity going up and down the summit trail. We worked our way up to the top and rested for a bit and had a bite to eat before heading down to the bottom of the summit trail, then turning around and heading back up to the top where we stopped and rested a short while again, before heading back to Dreamy Draw.

The weather was great for hiking today. The morning was brisk but not cold and it never got hot while we were out.

I swore off Piestewa Peak awhile ago and I'm not sure why I came back today. Probably because of some insane 25 mile 9200' aeg hike we have planned for next Saturday through the Phoenix Preserves and this gave us a bit of a warm up.

My recommendation, if you want to be alone, avoid Piestewa Peak, if you want to flaunt yourself, it's a good place to go.

Ran errands today and while I was in the area did a short hike at Dreamy Draw. Managed to avoid all the raindrops from the big storm that was hitting the valley. :D Started going counterclockwise along the Perle, but strayed frequently as I followed side trails. Most of which I had done before, but at least one of the was new. I think it was the first time I hiked the 1D south to north. Garmin wasn't charged so the distance is an approximation based on the time of the hike.

I was on a mission : rambo : Since I am more than slightly OCD when it comes to trails, I love Bartel's "get 'er done list". My goal was to find this elusive trail that was in the middle of the Dreamy Draw called Piestewa Basin Trail 1D. I had hiked this area numerous times but never recalled seeing this trail. So after studying the GPS track several times I went to the foothills to see what I could find. I zig zagged up and down the trails looking for any indication of a 1D trail, all to no avail. When I came home and studied a satellite version of Joe's GPS route I saw where I went wrong. Bad news. I did not get this trail done today. Good news. I now know where it is and I now have a reason to go back and hike that area again. (Also, I now know where the Valley View Trail 1E is...practically the same area, same trail.).

The Plan was to do a loop finishing off with Peak 2429 at the last rather than the beginning:
    8 to 100
    100 to 1A
    1A to 304
    304 to 8B
    8B to 8A
    8A to 8
    Peak 2429 to 8.

What really happened:
    8 to 100
    100 to 1A
    1A forever to 100 to 8

Mistake:
Intersection of 100 and 1A (2.5miles from 40th St and Shea TH).
I thot I was still on 100 when I turned right and saw the 1A sign that took me south and up a hill. Reality, when I got to the intersection I should have turned left (east) on 1A because I was already at 1A ](*,) .

I realized the error in my ways as I saw Northern Ave and then all of a sudden I am walking with the 51 on the right and then there are a bunch of houses in front of me :o . And I hate walking by any kind of freeway as I've never had to do that before.

So I ventured up the hill, saw some other folks ahead, headed that way, caught up with them, they took the high trail and I took the low, more used trail. They disappeared and I was by myself for quite awhile before another hiker came from seemingly nowhere and caught & passed me. Eventually I climb a pass  and decide this will have to be my Peak 2429 as I wanted to be back to Tonto by 11ish since I still had to go up to my mom's for more sorting and moving.

Once to this saddle I look down and can see the TH area and as I make my way down the hill, I can see 1A and eventually end up on the section of 1A I should have been on  . I encounter a couple hikers that aren't sure where they are at and after discussing where their car is (they have no map of course but they're young) they think they have a handle on how to get back to it. After I had walked back down the hill a piece, I realize I could have given them my map as I really didn't need it at this point.

Anyway, I continue on 1A and then veer NE toward 100 eventually hooking up with a last little piece of 8 arriving back at Tonto by 10:45. I stopped at Q-T on the way home and got a frozen Caramel Latte and Cheetos. Note to self :wrt: , Cheetos don't go with Caramel Latte.

There were lots of people on the trails today, lots of bike riders (all were curteous except 1) and a few horseback riders, lots of dogs (most on leash, some not). I have to say I thot of jjiii (I was calculating how fast he could do this 7.5 miles at 4 MPH :o - AZT #34) and BAB and TrekkinGekko and Tortoise and Coanbru and johnlp and teva and so many other of you that can light up these trails. It has to be great to see so much in a short time. This is when I particularly envy you all :)
