Little day trip out to Prescott for some running, hadn't been to White Spar in years so I decided to start there and head up Prescott Circle towards Wolverton Mtn. The TH area is way different than I remembered, seems it has been greatly expanded in recent years. Temperatures were reasonable to start off, and the grade up towards Wolverton Mtn is mostly gradual.

When I got to the Aspen Creek junction (~5 miles) I decided I need to do a little more, so I headed north-ish on Aspen Creek to an unsigned junction that is in here as Moby Trail. This is an old road that is now nice trail, and it was generally pleasant as it skirted the east slope of Mt Francis. Eventually I got to the ridge on the east side of Copper Creek and headed down that trail to Aspen Creek to make it a loop.

By the time I got back to the Quartz Mountain area it was starting to get a bit warm, but there was an occasional breeze. I decided to fast track it and took the road down from Quarts Mountain, which probably saves a half mile or so. Ran out of water just as I got back to White Spar.

Prescottstyle and I started hiking just before 9:00 a.m. Before we even crossed the road, I had to turn around: My shuttle driving wife couldn’t find the vehicle GPS I programmed for our pickup. The “missing” GPS was in our SUV’s back seat foot well. 😘

The first 1¼ miles has some decent shade, before crossing FR 9707V, and entering the old Indian Fire (2002) burn scar. The fire gods giveth and the fire gods taketh: The pine burned to stubs, but the manzanita are doing great! It’s shrubbery & views, instead of trees & shade. Good thing I liberally applied SPF 90 spray back at White Spar.

There is a new, undedicated, rest bench on Hill 6103’s northeast slope, at the 2¼ mile mark. It was actually chained down.

The pet cemetery I found next to the Wolverton Mountain gate eleven years ago [ photo ] is now almost indistinguishable.

From the gate, Trail #9415 begins descending. It ends after just over five miles at Trail #48. Left heads towards Copper Creek; Right towards my hopefully waiting wife. The final ¾ mile is the shadiest part of this Prescott Circle Trail segment. At the 5¼ mile mark, there is a pretty, small, fall that that unfortunately had no water.

My wife was indeed waiting! So, we drove back into town, to La Casa Prescottstyle, for the roasting of weenies, consuming of beer, and petting of dogs. 🐶

Been sidelined. Time to post an outing shorter than normal but to move forward again. Drew strong response. 10 of us -2 cuz road too rough? Rolled up on rollover wreck on I17 as paramedics were. Able to get moving again quickly. 😌

Views from peak alright but not the greatest. Glad to see Moby now on here. Can't say I see much reason to add .5 mile road to Mt Francis. Although no way to record another peak to stats. ⛰️

Funny thing is, group chose to go to same restaurant afterward that was chosen by a diff group 1 year ago.

Did the Whiskey Basin 91k on a tremendous saturday. Had nice clouds for a lot of the warmer part of the day. This route linked up a million trails and basically incorporated the entire Prescott Circle Trail around Prescott, starting and finishing at Watson Lake.

My plan was to jog whatever flat and downhill I could and just quickly hike the rest, since that is how I have been moving lately and I wanted to see if I could pull off an ultramarathon this way. It actually worked well and I had plenty of time to spare.

The route itself is beautiful mixing in high desert, juniper and pine country. Really spectacular.

I felt pretty good most of the time. Had some low back pain towards the end. The girls met me at mile 6 and 37 and that was truly a delight.

Did less than an hour at the end by headlamp and that was it. T shirt the whole time and the temps were perfect. Got hot a little in the middle section and got doused with ice water at mile 32 which was heavenly. it clouded up after that for what would have otherwise been the hottest and most exposed part so that was delightful

Aspen Creek Trail from Copper Basin Road to Mount Francis’ east ridge, then west off trail up that ridge to Moby Trail 737. Took 737 north and then turned off to off-trail it back to Aspen Creek Trail.

Thumb Butte Trail #33
A grippy 0.7mi / 620-foot ascent is always a refreshing start.

Thumb Connect Trail #314
The joy ride transitions to a pine forest trot. The name is longer than the trail.

Thumb Butte Bypass Trail #326
A few paces through the pines nets another easy unique.

Butte Connection Trail #323
This gentle half-mile descent is loaded with pine trees. 4 uniques in 2.4mi puts a smile on any trail lover.

Butte Creek Trail #321 - Prescott NF
This one is always a pleasure and feels isolated. The trail travels along the east bank.

Potts Creek Trail #327
The pines keep coming. None of these trails are worthy of the drive by themselves but I've always enjoyed this one more than the name suggests.

Cold Springs Trail #393
A steady subtle ascent continues with distant urban views.

Aspen Creek Trail #48
Albeit short-lived the nicest creekside stroll of the day.

Moby Trail #737
Unknowingly hiked over 0.75mi, we enjoyed it so much we missed a turn.

West Spruce Trail #264
After a long forest road walk, this weaves along the Sierra Prietta ridge. Peekaboo views of Granite Mountain.

Williams Peak Trail #738
Impromptu addition was a better-than-expected treat.

Garden Party #324
The White Rock Trailhead is large. The west end slithers around some boulders, then evens out alongside a ravine.

Miller Creek Trail #367
Signage warned of being squashed by mountain bikes. The creek was clear but as shallow as I recall.

Thumb Butte South Area Loop
This would be a nice package-deal variation for rehabbing seniors.

Synopsis
Various loops here have always been enjoyed more than anticipated. Pleasant lowkey miles.

Headed north to higher ground to put some distance between us and the heat from the fire orb.

I tweaked a route we did 6 years ago to get rid of a less than memorable off trail section and add some options.

You start this loop with an immediate 600+ foot climb to get to the Thumb Butte Saddle. After that there are tons of choices up here on nicely groomed trails. MTB's seem to be the largest user of these trails, but we did not see a single one on the day. In fact, we only crossed paths with a few hikers.

I can't begin to remember all the names of the trails we were on, but here are some of my takeaways.

Smooth trails, gentle grades, pine trees for shade, four flowing (lightly) Creeks, nice breezes, big views to the Prescott Valley and the Copper Basin from the Sierra Prieta Lookout.

Other takeaways included some of the things heard on the day:
"Is this hike all uphill"
"Is this hike all downhill"
"It's too hot"
"It's too cold"
"The wind's not blowing"
"The wind's blowing too much"
"My ear's bleeding"
"My feet hurt"
"Can you go pick up the car"

At one point he announced that he was too tired to whine anymore, but that never proved to be true.

This is/was a very pleasant loop (with earplugs). There's nothing that jumps out as being extraordinary, but one I'll do again.

Driving home, southbound on I-17, we were quite happy to not be going northbound. A jack-knifed travel trailer and a bad rear ender, had things a mess around the Sunset Point rest area. We waived to @FOTG as we passed and continued home.

Got dropped off at Aspen Trailhead on Copper Basin Road, and hiked up Aspen Draw and Wolverton Mountain trails to the summit of Wolverton Mountain. Nice views on Wolverton Trail, it had been many years since I had hiked it last. Found the social (?) trail that drops off the north face to Sheriffs Posse Road and walked it back to the parents house. Fun mini-adventure.

Coming back from Sierra Prieta overlook, my dad dropped me off at the Copper Basin divide, and I ventured on foot up the road to Mount Francis. I made a zigzag descent off of Mount Francis’ north ridge and arrived on trail 737, a new one to me, and a worthy trail in my opinion. Trail 737 ended near the north end of Aspen Trail, so I followed it and then hiked Copper Basin Road back to the parents’ house. Familiar area and an unfamiliar trail: good combo.

Mapped out a series of trails to create a worthy outing. Then realize there is no Way to start from where I had envisioned. Upon arrival at TH, had to quickly improvise.

Decided to try out this 1. Many ups and downs boost the AEG.Then merged onto Copper but turned right so as not to drop down into exposed 🌞. Ended up on unmarked side trail. This took us to several other unmarked junctions.

We were a able to follow Moby back. Stats weren't to my liking. Luckily she agreed to an extension across the street. Will return to do Copper in full + other trail near the high end. ✌

Nice hike in Prescott with cooler temps and whispering pines. Windy. Lots of birds and a rattlesnake hiding in a bush. No people. Fun day!

Got dropped off at the lower trailhead on highway 89 on the way into Prescott and started up the ridge at the bullet-riddled East Copper Trail sign. Cloudy skies, bitter wind, frosted summits of the Bradshaws and numerous deer prints in the muddy trail were my only company. A dusting of snow lingered in the shade higher up. The trail is still nicely groomed and easy to follow. The mine tunnel at 6100’ has been gated by the Forest Service. Turned onto the south end of Aspen Creek Trail for the first time and started following it north. I was a little unsure which route was Aspen at an unmarked trail junction at 6800’ but a HAZ gps route showed the way. Spooked a solitary deer who went airborne in front of me. Made it to Copper Basin Road at dark, chilled and damp, right in time to get picked up by Shauna in a toasty truck.

Traffic jam from anthem-Black Canyon City. 😧 Caused for a late start. Saw 1 person finishing as I was starting, that's it. 🙂 Couple other unmarked trails intersect early on.

Spotted the old trail which has been covered up near #9415A. The climb then begins to intensify, allowing for greater views. Past the gate it turns to a 2 track. Explored trail 48 a bit & it appears to have much potential.

On the way back I tried a side trail which led to a nearby road. Decided to briefly bushwack back to the trail. By the time I returned the parking lot was empty. Then off to Wildflower just as they were bout to close. 🍴

Quick hike while I was out. The only thing that deterred me was the amount of snow that was still present. It came up to my shins in some parts so I was unable to complete this hike. I will return to it after the snow has melted.

The last time I went to Aspen Creek TH a friendly trail user told me about all the trails leading from it. I already had a route planned, but she was insistent that I do Moby sometime. Today was the day. When I was getting ready to leave the house it was about 60F, by the time I got out of my car, it felt more like 50 already. Leaving the trailhead on Aspen Creek Trail #48 it drops into a little valley that is noticeably cooler than the trailhead. I was starting to worry about my shorts and t-shirt with no gloves. I had a jacket in my pack, so I decided I'd be fine. It starts off with some ups and downs, mostly ups, which kept me warm enough. I only saw a few people on the trail the whole time, it was easy to follow and well maintained. There were a ton of trails not listed either on the city map, or the National Geographic Bradshaw Mtns map. I did take one of those for maybe a tenth of a mile. At least one of them probably goes to Mt Francis Peak radio towers, I'll have to get up there some day. After turning off #48 onto #373, it looks like an old jeep road and I was pretty disappointed. Then after a bit, it opens up the views to the South and switches to single track and you get fun trail and amazing views for the remaining 1.5 miles to the intersection with #260, at which point I turned around and headed back the way I came. On the way home from the trailhead still in the dirt road section of Copper Basin Rd, there was a Range Rover (I think) laying on its side in the ditch on the side, while a guy was talking to the police standing next to a Jeep, I can't imagine how that happened everybody seemed so calm and I didn't notice any car damage, it's a wide stable road.

We decided to try to do all of the Prescott Circle Trail, we've done small parts of it already, but we're going to make a concerted effort. Weekend 1, the 6 mile segment from Aspen Creek TH to White Spar Campground. We left my truck at the White Spar Campground and my wife drove us over the Aspen Creek TH. There were warnings on the way about high clearance and what not, it seemed like a typical sedan would be fine, at least when it's dry. Right off the bat, trail #48 dips into a dry creek area with fall colors (a real treat for our first fall after moving from Phoenix) and boulders, It's a pretty gentle climb for about two miles, then we took a little detour to the peak of Wolverton Mtn, or close to it... there's a fenced off section with razor wire up there that I expect is a decommissioned microwave tower or something, it's not a great peak to arrive at, but it's a short easy detour, so why not. We saw a trail maintenance crew out there and could see they had cut the vegetation way back. The rest of the hike was downhill and made for really easy walking. You get great views of most of the Prescott area from up there and somehow we could see Humphreys better than from our house, which is closer. The trail was easy to follow and though it had some offshoot trails, the signs were very clear.

Aspen Creek Trail #48 starts across Copper Basin Road from Aspen Creek Trailhead parking lot. Last couple miles to trailhead on Copper Basin Road is dirt road and fords Aspen Creek before reaching parking lot. Creek bed is concrete where Copper Basin Road crosses the creek which could be a problem during monsoon or snow melt.

Loop consists of Aspen Creek Trail #48 to a small section of East Copper Trail #260 north to Moby Trail #737 and return on Aspen Creek Trail #48. Looking at profile, it may be easier in reverse direction by turning right onto Moby Trail #737 off of Aspen Creek Trail #48. However, I like the views ahead in the direction taken and there is a steep section at the south end of Aspen Creek Trail #48 on which I prefer going downhill.

Great views of mountains and valleys southwest of Prescott, AZ, including Prescott, Thumb Butte and Granite Mountain near beginning and end. From the the south end of Aspen Creek Trail #48 and East Copper Trail #260 there are views of Skull Valley and mountains near Yarnell in middle of hike. Vegetation starts with Ponderosa pine and Gambel oak mix and becomes juniper, manzanita, desert holly and prickly pear mix during middle of hike. Hike can be extended by taking East Copper Trail #260 (middle section of loop) in either direction, south is downhill and north is uphill. Some of the best views are on East Copper Trail #260 are just south of the loop.

I hiked this trail yesterday with my parents and my dog. It was our first time on this trail and my first time using route scout. We hiked to the 2.9 mile mark where the gigantic juniper was, marvelled at it for a bit, then headed back the way we came. There were some wildflowers and there are more to come. The weather was beautiful and the trees smelled amazing. The oaks were pretty with their fresh green. It looks like they are doing a little tree clearing in some areas. There was lots of shade and when there wasn't, you got great views. It was not strenuous, but the ups and downs gave a bit of a workout. I'll go back again and do more of the trail another day.

Started from the Aspen Creek trailhead at 7:30am and 36 degrees. Found signs warning of a mountain bike race, luckily for the next day. Headed south on Aspen Creek trail to East Copper trail. Took Copper up to Mount Francis road to the top of the mountain. Followed a jeep road north from the summit back to Aspen Creek trail for a short walk back to the trailhead. Saw a bunch of mountain bikes out enjoying the day and some hikers with a lack of a plan and destination looking for the communication towers. Lots of Oak Apples (galls) on Aspen Creek trail. Nice tarantula on East Copper trail.

angela suggested a hike for sunday and we tossed around ideas
looking for about ten miles, not too much elevation gain, at around 6,000 feet
remembered seeing a nice loop that kathy and karl had done in prescott, so angela cut it down to size
set out around 0900 with clear skies, a slight breeze and temps in the low 70s
first was aspen creek trail, which meanders through pine forest
then the first of two detours, cutting off the section that continues to meet east copper trail
instead we took a use trail up to near mt. francis
next detour was the right fork of another use trail that brought us halfway around the mountain ](*,)
backtracked and took the left fork, which led us to the road that goes up to the peak
not much to see there, other than communications equipment
some decent views
dropped back to the road and had a little lunch break
continued up the road to the sierra prieta overlook
great views to the west
noticed a trail leading up a nearby ridge - the sierra prieta trail
followed it to the high point and did some off trail trying for the perfect view of granite mountain and watson lake
good views of spruce, union and some other peaks
retraced our steps and took copper basin road back to the trailhead
there are a number of unmarked trails and roads all over this area
our detours really didn't matter on the mt. francis summit
a lot of road walking, but very scenic and little traffic
much more to explore from aspen creek trailhead
just noticed bruce and joe have done some of these trails, too
headed home after dinner at the office, with one slowdown on I-17
fun day on new trails with good company :)
thanks, angela
