Was sick for a week. Had to cancel plans last weekend and then again on Monday 😕 Yesterday was the first day I was feeling better. Ok, time to test myself.

A friend wanted to go up Thompson from Gateway but I doubted I was ready for that. Instead I joined this outing. Low and behold, the hike leader was in the same situation. Had done this outing previously 4 years ago. Did it the opposite direction this time.

While not 💯, was still one of the fastest in the group. Great bounce back outing. As it turns out, my friend was also recovering from being sick and had to cut the more extreme outing short.

It was incredibly smoky in the lower Verde River Valley, which obscured much of the view to the east. I'd guess this is because of the Horse, Peak and Wolf Fire's smoke settling overnight. Surprisingly, it didn't feel hot once in the sun at Bell Pass, so adding on the two peaks to the loop was easy-peasy with the breezes. It's ridiculous that McDowell Peak has been culture cancelled considering that there's an ammo box up there with a bunch of admitted lawbreakers signed in. Cool stories bros! Why not commit a felony so one of you could be elected president and pardon the others?!

I decided to stay close to home today and take advantage of cool weather to do this longish hike.

I did a lasso loop starting on the Dixie Mine Trail, going over Bell Pass, and then looping back on the Gateway Loop Trail, and going past Inspiration Point on the way to Windgate Pass. In other words, the loop was clockwise.

There was a fair number of people on the trails that can be easily accessed from the Gateway TH, but hardly anyone otherwise.

I heard some coyotes yapping in the morning, and saw 3 deer at Windgate Pass.

The weather was very nice for mid-March.

Blue richards won the wildflower derby, with fiddlenecks the runnerup. Poppies had their moments along with some lupine. Brittlebush are not blooming yet.

We decided to start our ascent with the Desert Park Trail because when the gate opens in the morning, ~98% of the hikers simultaneously crush onto the Gateway Loop like greyhounds chasing a hare, which is definitely one of the silly aspects of MSP hiking (it is Snottsdale). : wink :
This hike is essentially the same as the Tom's Thumb Loop off Windgate Pass Trail, except that it omits The Lookout. It seems fatuous that they're almost duplicates. This was Dese's first time at the McDowell's highpoint and only my second. I may have one more highly illegal ascent planned, but that'll be a triplog for another day...

Started 5:15am, ended 8:30am. Gateway visitor center to Inspiration Point on Gateway Loop trail and Windgate Pass Trail. Comfortable to start, about 68 degrees. In the shadow of the mountains for a good part of the hike up to Inspiration Point. A few hikers in the area of visitor center but few once I got out on the trail. Very nice at Inspiration Point just listening to the breeze and call of the birds.

More hikers on the way back as I got closer to the visitor center. No surprise. I hiked a short distance on Desert Park trail and ran into a roadrunner. He led me to his nest several feet off the ground in the arm of a saguaro where a young roadrunner was nesting.

I have been doing a lot of short hikes lately so I decided to take advantage of a cold, cloudy day and do a longer, close-to-home today.

I started and ended at the Adero Canyon TH, and did a long CCW loop that went through 3 different preserves and utilized a number of different trails. The trails in these preserves are interconnected, and there are several different trailheads that you could start from and come up with some loop hikes that are as long or as short as you want.

This hike isn't all that exciting, but it worked well for what I wanted to do today.

There were very few people out on the trails today -- I guess that the masses stayed home instead of venturing out in the unseasonably cool weather. On the way back, I went 7-8 miles without seeing anyone on the trail.

At one point in mid-afternoon there were some snow flurries, which I enjoyed.

there were a few chuparosa blooming on the sections of the Quartz Trail that went through some washes, but that was it for wildflowers

Beautiful weather for a hike. I started at the crack of 11 at a surprisingly busy Gateway TH.

My loop was CW starting on the Windgate Trail. I passed a smattering of people until I got to the turn for Toms Thumb. I like the climb up this trail, it's especially nice with the cloud cover. I got passed by a couple of runners.

Once up top, I noticed there was a climber on top of Toms Thumb. I made my way over to and down the East End Trail/Bell Pass Trail, where I had the backside of the McD's to myself.

Really saw nobody until I merged with the popular Gateway Loop, where the Snowbirds and Scottdale's finest were on parade.

i was thinking that i would rate each trail by the number of people i saw on the trail until i got to the last trail (desert park trail), where i didn't see anyone but it was surrounded by views of people's backyards. i had the most fun coming down out of windgate pass and back up the east end trail. i took my break up at the lookout with just one other person, and i also really enjoyed coming down the tom thumb trail in the rain. oh yes, the rain was so sweet.

side note: i had trouble with route scout losing me again for nearly all of the east end trail, and then although i was following the micky d loop route up until that time and also had the tom's thumb loop off windgate pass saved in my files, it continued me on the latter route. i'll look for an idiot's user forum on this to figure that out.

also, since tibber does this, i figured i'd include my stats from my fitness watch: total time: 6:49:25, distance: 13.98 miles, active calories: 1,703, total calories: 2,327, elevation gain 3,096 ft., average heart rate: 128 bpm, average pace: 29'16". weather 60 degrees, humidity 30%.

Office shut down this week due to covid outbreak. Feeling my best during this in awhile. Time to up the ante. Found a few advanced hikers on meetup & away we went.

Despite starting from the crowded gateway TH, the goal is to get on the Tom's thumb trail and get away from everyone else. On a weekend, nonetheless.

Beginning on the packed saguaro trail, we then veered L onto the busy Gateway Trail. Then straight onto Windgate. The majority turned here for the easier loop 😎 We decided to pass our turn & proceed uphill to inspiration point. No one else up there 😌

Turned back to head up Tom's Thumb. Back end has plenty of EG on it & virtually no people 👍 Realized the small posts out here show where u r on the map. Turned right to climb up to the Lookout. Never crossed paths with any of the Tom's Thumb crowds. 😊

decided i don't really care for windgate pass trail
better to go up bell pass trail, then up east end and down tom's thumb for a bigger loop

Meet an old friend that I have not seen in 20 years. Early start so it was Windgate-Bell Pass for breakfast. Good loop to catch up on what's been happening the past 20 years!

Nice weather for the first hike of the winter, wasn’t sure how long I would feel like hiking so chose this due to loop options. For a weekday the parking lot was busy just not weekend mobbed. After turning on to Bell Pass Trail only encountered 3 couples coming down and one runner that passed actually on the last steep part before the saddle. Feeling pretty well after Bell Pass so decided to head up East End Trail , the top teasingly in view makes progress seem discouraging but taking a look back reveals what you gained. Started seeing some other hikers once heading toward Tom’s Thumb quite a few school aged children running around. On to the Lookout Trail only a half dozen others there, moved to a perch for a snack break. Once back on Tom’s Thumb Trail the steep switchbacks started on this well maintained trail. No water seen at the Mountain Spring but didn’t look for the spring box, before this I did go off trail about 100 yards in thick vegetation to look for it but realized later it was further down the trail  Shortly after the junction of the Gateway Loop Trail spotted 3 deer on a ridge below one buck with 8 to 10 points. Pointed them out to a couple of hikers heading out who were appreciative. If I had stayed awhile may have gotten some better photos but by now I was ready to be done. Otherwise an uneventful finish to an enjoyable hike. After going up Tom’s Thumb Trail and down East End the other time I did this loop I prefer the loop in the direction I took today.

Persuaded by the triplogs ,by trekkin_gecko and johnlp, decided to make the long drive instead of my usual Pass Mountain loop. This time of year could call this the lupine loop. Looks like they are fading some and with the warmer temps and no rain not likely to last much longer. With an early weekday start only 2 other hikers leaving the trailhead near the same time. Last year did this CCW so today did it CW, not much different but apparently the photos are not as good and trip was slower in this direction :D , skipped the gateway saddle today. Only saw about 10 other hikers all morning until getting back to the trailhead where at least that many were hanging out on the bridge by the trailhead [-( Most of the color noted on the windgate trail, making for frequent picture stops after leaving inspiration point , snack break at Windgates Pass. Nice hike today but don’t think I’ll to be back until next spring.
