made a loop from the cayusa trailhead using balancing rock trail, granite mountain and a few others. nice and mellow with great scenery and some nice shady areas. made a loop around granite basin lake.

this is a nice area, and one i will visit again for sure.

found a great picnic spot, then headed back home to the inferno

this was a redemption hike for michelle and i...roughly 15 years later. we tried to do this years ago. left our car and immediately walked into a gnat armageddon the likes of which i had never, and still never have, seen (again). long story short, we bailed way back then.

nice to finally check this one off the list. nice hike! had perfect weather and found a great spot for a picnic too.

went up to mingus afterwards and messed around.

super cool place. we had a great time here. made a loop out of a bunch of the trails. only saw a couple people.

we hiked out to the giant alligator juniper saved by the granite mountain hotshots from fire in 2013. it is very impressive and sobering.

the hike out there is through wide open country with expansive views in all directions. it was hot but not unbearable.

very worthy of a visit. we chatted for a few minutes with the rancher on the way back. very nice guy

we just barely beat some pretty impressive storms

parked off senator highway and made a loop around the goldwater lakes. very nice hike through the forest and excellent single track. dropped down and contoured around part of upper goldwater lake.

the lake was crowded but the trails were not. just a few mountain bikers.

we did the loop around watson lake. went clockwise. first time out here. we had an absolute blast messing around out on the north end in particular. great scenery!

storm blew through right at the end, so we had lunch in the car to wait it out. after the storm passed by, we went canoeing for a couple hours. that was so cool. post storm sky really made the scenery great and there was almost nobody out there. saw a bald eagle! first time for all of us.

excellent day all around

we hiked the loop counterclockwise taking the long way up. this was a great choice for a nice moderate climb up, with a fair amount of shade. excellent forest with occasional nice views. had some great cloud cover too.

had lunch on spruce mountain and chatted with the lookout for a bit. saw just a few people all day.

stopped and messed around on the boulders on the way down. Sierra loved that.

we all really enjoyed this one. great day :y:

We made a loop out of some nice trails from the Whiterock Trailhead.

Nice tread through the forest on the first part. climb a little higher on the way out for some great views of granite mountain and thumb butte

storms chasing us on the way back, but nothing came of it and it cleared up soon after

Did a loop including a trip out to Rogers rock. Checked out the Kent spring cabin too, it’s been a while. Nice and green up there but the flowers aren’t really going yet and the creeks are just trickling. Heard 3 trogons but didn’t look for them.

Madera canyon is kind of being overrun right now with the catalinas being closed. Felt lucky to find a parking spot
