Perfect weather for hiking. Clear and sunny, temperature around 70 with a light breeze. Got to the trailhead around 10:15 and the lot was full. I was lucky to get the last spot. Most of the way up I had the trail to myself which was perfect. At about 3/4 of the way I caught up a couple who were taking a short break with music and dancing. I passed them and continued on. Even from a distance I could see there were a lot of people on the white peak.

Finally I passed about a dozen or so people in 3 groups on their way down. With all the cars at the trailhead and my late start I was surprised to make it this far without seeing other people. Following the ridge line I made a wrong turn and the couple I passed earlier passed me just as a large group of people were heading down. The happy dancing couple stopped to talk with them and take selfies with them, and I was stuck waiting. After all the selfies and introductions and conversations the couple heading up continued on. The folks heading down asked me to take a group photo of them. Sure. Finally after a long rest I was on my way up. But after just a few steps we ran into another group heading down. Happy dancing guy again stopped for conversation and selfies with this group. Not wanting to get stuck again I excused myself and passed them.

I got to the top at the same time as the dancing couple. Lots of people at the top. All apparently on the same group as the dancing couple. A joyous reunion ensure with lots of laughing and screaming. Then there were speeches and prayers (I think, it was all in Spanish). I found a place to sit and wolfed down some trail mix then headed down.

I'm slow going down. It's a steep trail. It wasn't long before the big group from the top caught up to me. I decided to try to keep up with them. I kept up with them most of the way down which was a challenge. I made good time, but my legs were very tired from that fast pace.

The dirt road coming in from the south was in good condition. There were a few dips following the power lines, but nothing the Cherokee couldn't handle.
