| partners | | Perfect weather for April allowed for another Goldfields hike with Kelly. She had sent me an old track of hers, and a track Andy had posted, and I added a few things to get the mileage over 10.
We set off from the Willow Springs TH around 0530. Veered north to Willow Springs tank, then worked our way back south. Headed up a good use trail to Helmet Rock. I stopped about 30’ below the summit, but Kelly went all the way to the top. Great views.
After that, we picked our way around to Golden Eye Arches. Some brushy offtrail, but not terrible. Then continued west thru Quartz Crystal Arroyo. South, then up to Anniversary Arch. From there, we continued south on the ridge, which was much better than dropping down to Rough N Ready.
Made our way over to Checkmate Arch. Fairly easy offtrail up to the arch, which was well cairned. After that, we closed out the loop and finished up around 1100. Didn’t see anybody all morning until we were getting back to the trailhead. Two riders with four horses, one solo hiker, and a woman wandering around with a very vocal cat.
Fun hike with a lot to see in 10 miles. One of our goals was to stay mostly on the slickrock and avoid the washes, and we were pretty successful with that. Great weather for this one. |
