Early morning hike in the Phoenix Preserve. Started from Dreamy Draw around 5:30. I didn’t have much of a plan except I wanted to include Valley View. I ended up going CCW. First on the Perle Charles then to the Valley View. There are quite a few use trails back in the area and it’s easy to miss this trail unless you’re deliberately trying to do it. From here I made my way up to the Freedom Trail and then took the Irregular Link down to the Dreamy Draw Outer Loop. Followed some use trails in the northern part of the Dreamy Draw area and then made my way back to the TH.

Nice loop. In the shade until I hit the DD Outer Loop. No wildlife, but plenty of action. 16 hikers, 9 bikers and 1 trail runner. As I was exiting the park I passed the biggest hiking group I’ve ever seen. Must have about 30 gathered on the corner. I’d hate to be on their trail

An easy morning PMP hike with Dese to complete all my undone sections of the Perl Charles and a few other trails. The hiking alongside SR51 was annoyingly noisy and it smelled of vehicular exhaust, but the inner (eastern) sections of the loop were better.

After work hike. Got to the Dreamy Draw TH around 4pm and parking was already bleeding into the no parking area. (I’ve seen this consistently the last 5 visits, or so, where demand is greater than designated capacity. I’ve actually driven away a couple of times because of no available parking). Used a version of the Dreamt Draw Nature trail to get into the park....did it a couple of weeks ago and liked it. Nice single track with not too much traffic. Connected to the Valley View and took that up and over the saddle. Views of the valley and the city beyond were ok...a little hazy in the distance. Took user trails and maybe portions of the Perle as I wrapped around the southern edge of the park and came back along its western periphery. So many options in th8s park it is hard to keep straight what is and isn’t legit. No wildlife, but plenty of hikers.

Short after work hike. Holidays, and the lack of weekday traffic, is the best time for me to visit the Piestewa area. Started from the Dreamy Draw TH and did a loop incorporating the Valley View Trail. Went clockwise utilizing the parts of the Christiansen, Perle and user trails to make the loop work. The parking lot was near capacity but I didn't see too many people on the trails I used. Great weather. Wildlife included a squirrel, chipmunk and lizards.

Purpose of the hike was to do a loop that incorporated the Valley View Trail. Started from the Summit Trail and went counterclockwise on the Freedom Trail. Connected to the Perle Charles and took that down to Dreamy Draw and then south along the freeway. And then took the Perle up over a couple of ridges to where I did the Valley View. From there connected back to the Freedom, which I took back to Summit. Good hike. Weather was once again great! Nice thing about this area you can make the loops as long or as short as you want. Trails weren't too crowded until I was heading down on the Summit Trail....of course.

Monday night meetup hike with the Trail Mix crew. There were about fifteen of us this time. We did the same route we did two weeks ago, which is mostly on unnamed trails. Both mines were home to unfriendly rattlesnakes that clearly did not want to be disturbed. After the sun set, we broke out the headlamps. They were helpful, but not absolutely necessary. The full moon kept things fairly well lit and made it a nice night for a hike.

Monday night I broke tradition and did two things I don't normally do; hike at night and hike with a large group. Trail Mix meetup had arranged a night hike near Dreamy Draw on some trails I wouldn't have known about otherwise. About 20 people showed up. We passed some mines, spooked some bats and saw a lone scorpion toward the end of the hike. The only listed trails I know we were on were Valley View and portions of the Perl Charles. I'm not even sure if any of the other spur trails have names.

The sole purpose of this hike was to incorporate the Valley View Trail 1E. ( I'd love to know how this trail got its name). Started off from the Summit TH and took the Freedom trail counter clockwise. I used the Irregular Link and a few other side trails to get into the valley to access the Valley View Trail. This is actually a nice little (literally) trail that climbs up the side of one of the mountains and gives a stunning view of the ...51 freeway. Actually, the view wasn't that great, but the trail was nice, though short. From there, I took the Charles Perl Trail back to the Freedom which connected to the Summit Trail. I briefly thought about summiting, but bailed on that idea. Trails were surprisingly busy. I saw people throughout the park.

Completed a loop hike starting from Dream Draw. The temps were very pleasant due to the cloud cover.

1st trip
Inspired by the recent forum thread on urban hiking, I decided to throw one together of my own. I also borrowed some from Patrick's track (thanks!). Starting from Sweetwater and 19th ave, I went up to Shaw Butte, over to North Mountain, then Lookout Mnt, Shadow Mnt, a few un-named peaks, Stoney Mnt, Piestewa, 2429, and finished off at Camelback. I was beyond tired by the end! I think I set the record for the slowest pace up Echo. Pretty uneventful day otherwise.

Kinda bummed to see the elevation drop under 10K as it showed 10,200 on my GPS. i was really hoping for 10 :(

The Plan was to do a loop finishing off with Peak 2429 at the last rather than the beginning:
    8 to 100
    100 to 1A
    1A to 304
    304 to 8B
    8B to 8A
    8A to 8
    Peak 2429 to 8.

What really happened:
    8 to 100
    100 to 1A
    1A forever to 100 to 8

Mistake:
Intersection of 100 and 1A (2.5miles from 40th St and Shea TH).
I thot I was still on 100 when I turned right and saw the 1A sign that took me south and up a hill. Reality, when I got to the intersection I should have turned left (east) on 1A because I was already at 1A ](*,) .

I realized the error in my ways as I saw Northern Ave and then all of a sudden I am walking with the 51 on the right and then there are a bunch of houses in front of me :o . And I hate walking by any kind of freeway as I've never had to do that before.

So I ventured up the hill, saw some other folks ahead, headed that way, caught up with them, they took the high trail and I took the low, more used trail. They disappeared and I was by myself for quite awhile before another hiker came from seemingly nowhere and caught & passed me. Eventually I climb a pass  and decide this will have to be my Peak 2429 as I wanted to be back to Tonto by 11ish since I still had to go up to my mom's for more sorting and moving.

Once to this saddle I look down and can see the TH area and as I make my way down the hill, I can see 1A and eventually end up on the section of 1A I should have been on  . I encounter a couple hikers that aren't sure where they are at and after discussing where their car is (they have no map of course but they're young) they think they have a handle on how to get back to it. After I had walked back down the hill a piece, I realize I could have given them my map as I really didn't need it at this point.

Anyway, I continue on 1A and then veer NE toward 100 eventually hooking up with a last little piece of 8 arriving back at Tonto by 10:45. I stopped at Q-T on the way home and got a frozen Caramel Latte and Cheetos. Note to self :wrt: , Cheetos don't go with Caramel Latte.

There were lots of people on the trails today, lots of bike riders (all were curteous except 1) and a few horseback riders, lots of dogs (most on leash, some not). I have to say I thot of jjiii (I was calculating how fast he could do this 7.5 miles at 4 MPH :o - AZT #34) and BAB and TrekkinGekko and Tortoise and Coanbru and johnlp and teva and so many other of you that can light up these trails. It has to be great to see so much in a short time. This is when I particularly envy you all :)
