Finally did a big loop i have wanting to do for years. Probably more than i am ready for at the moment, but the time was right nonetheless so i just did it anyway.

started at wilson mountain TH and went CCW. i had premier weather for the day and on a gorgeous thursday in sedona i saw about 10 people all day. all of the trails are in great shape with the highlights for me being wilson mountain and sterling pass, as well as dropping down brins mesa but really the whole thing is pretty awesome (except the short death defying walk up 89A between N wilson mountain and sterling pass. :o )

Delightful day and happy to finally knock this one off my list

Wanted to do the whole Wilson Mnt loop, but time restraints made it a shorter lasso instead. Started at the Wilson Mnt TH and then the Jim Thompson trail, which was super easy and flat as it curves around the contour of Steamboat Rock. After a couple miles, it goes down away from the hills and into a very dense juniper forest. Only saw one other hiker until I got to the Brins Mesa TH. After almost zero elevation change in the last hour, this was my favorite part of the hike. Up on top of Brin's Mesa was a real nice grassy area that rolled out to red rock spires in every direction. Coming down Soldier's Pass, there was a lot of traffic. Climbed up a few different hills to check some caves but didnt see much of anything and being by myself (kind of) decided on not going any further up. Seven Sacred Pools was a cool feature but didnt want to wait in the Instagram line to take any pics without anyone posing in the pools. Devils Kitchen was rad geology to check out. Saw some climbers rappelling off Steamboat on the way back. So much for time saving as there were a couple wrecks on the 17 and it was a 3 1/2 hour "drive" back to Phoenix anyway.

Second hike of the day drove from Yavapai TH to Midgley Bridge. Goal is to get as much hiking in while I'm up here and still remain happily married  (wife doesn't get up until 8am, so I make the most of my mornings). The parking lot was near capacity (15 cars max), but I was the twelfth there. Did not have a lot of time so I opted Wilson Canyon Trail. Hiked in following the trail which was very easy to follow. It was more up than I anticipated, but it was gradual and occurred in stages. Ended up crossing the dry wash 11 times. All the crossings were easy to identify. Most of the trail was enclosed with trees providing shade for most of the hike. There was a nice cairn at the end of the trail stating "end of trail". I highly recommend going past this cairn and hiking up a dry fall. This gets you above the tree line and offers some great views. On the way back I opted for the Wilson Mountain Trail connector. This was about a .35 mile trail that connects to the ......Wilson Mountain Trail. It gains about 200 ft in the first .15 miles and then levels out as it connect Wilson Mountain Trail. Took Wilson Mountain Trail back to the TH. This was a much more gradual descent than I anticipated. Nice views as I descended.

Since my first time on Wilson Mountain was with Joel in the midst of a blizzard with a visibility of a few feet I never was even able to see the summit views so I figured a return trip was needed one day.

Found a small amount of flowing water in Wilson Canyon and dipped my hat in before making quick work of the switchbacks up to the "First Bench".
Everything was perfect besides the relentless 30+ mph winds gusts, there was a brief moment of relief on the shielded north side of Wilson just before the summit but once on top the gusts were even worse.
[ youtube video ]

The views were nice but not quite motivating enough to brace the wind and hang out a couple hours until sunset to take photos as planned.
It sounded like a roaring jet engine up there and it just wasn't fun at that point so I bailed and semi regretfully made my descent down the mountain.

Went straight down to the creek via the Huckaby Trail for a post hike soak and was tempted to go to the old HS hangout at Grasshopper Point but instead just relaxed and took a couple photos until about 8pm.

Any day hiking is better than being at work!

A Happy 50th Anniversary Present

I can't believe it.... 50 years married to the same woman and we're still together :D To celebrate the auspicious occasion, we decided to spend a weekend in Sedona where she could go shopping and I could go hiking.... Since Pat doesn't like hiking and I don't like shopping, it was kinda the best of both worlds. We stayed at the Best Western Arroyo Roble right along Oak Creek and across from the Huckaby Trail. I can't say enough about the views of the Munds Mountain right from the doorway of our room, and yes, we could see Snoopy Rock too.

I was nice enough to go shopping on Saturday and we stopped in at the Hike House and spent lots of money on a new pair of Merrell Moab Hikers, shirts, etc. Then it was off to Tlaquepaque for some artsy stuff that she likes :D Had a fun day on the overly crowded main drag, shopping, eating, people watching, whatever.

Sunday morning I had Pat drop me off at the trailhead at Midgley Bridge where I slipped into my new hikers and off I went for a couple of hours of touring Wilson Canyon. Beautiful shaded trails were well trimmed and easy to follow up and down into the almost dry wash.... and I was the only one there 8) It's a great, albeit short, trail that seems to end too soon so I found some cairns that took me further up and above the trees where I could finally get a good view of Wilson Mountain on one side and Steamboat Rock on the opposite side. On my casual return I met a couple of hikers, exchanged notes and headed back to the bridge.

Okay, that's a short hike, but it broke the ice. It was my first hike in the Sedona area and now I gotta get back and do some more exploring of those fabulous red rocks. The traffic and the crowds were a serious drawback but I'm sure I can find a nice out-of-the-way hike in the mid-week to keep me entertained and alone.

Parked in the empty Grasshopper day use site with the plan to go up Casner Canyon to Schnebly Hill road to Munds Wagon Trail to Cow Pies to Hangover and return on Damifino Trail. Unfortunately, Oak Creek was running strong and running deep. Unable to find a suitable crossing we dropped to plan B. Took Allen's Bend trail down to the bridge and headed up Wilson Canyon trail to the end. Took a side trip up Jim Thompson trail to add some time and miles. Returned the way we came. Passed miles and miles worth of cars heading into Sedona on our way out. Stopped at Red Rock Cafe in Oak Creek for some beers and burgers.

Bruce and I went on a World Class hike and witnessed spectacular views. Started off with a little off-trail to the best unnamed trail in Arizona. Albeit overcast t'was a joy. We hooked up with the Dam - if - i - no trail. Apparently easier to follow than the name suggests. The sun burned off the morning layer enhancing our views.

Next up was Steamboat! The approach is Cathedral Rock squared and tourist free. I forgot to ruin the experience this time around. The Aloha Boardwalk Deck wasn't in the cards again. My good buddy Bob would knock it out in a heartbeat.

We scratched plans for Wilson Canyon and headed straight for the grand finale on Wilson Mountain. Here we passed a half dozen groups. The highlight on route was the worlds meanest hissing gopher snake. Yawner finale views sealed the deal. The sleigh was homeward bound.

Cheers cheers and sandstone dreams in a roundabout kinna way!

Below is the course around Sedona for the 50K endurance race, and the elevation gain was provided by the race director. This was by far the toughest, yet most scenic trail race I've ever done. Fortunately, I had a friend from Flagstaff running the race that knew the entire route, otherwise I would have been incredibly lost. We exchanged the lead with several other runners as the day went on, somehow he and I managed to come out on top finishing the race together in a true team effort with a tie for first. Wish I could have enjoyed the scenery, except I was a little more concerned with my foot placement on the trails. The weather was perfect, the race was well organized, everything seemed to go as smooth as possible, and everyone was in good spirits despite the challenges the race provided.

Did this one as a quick way home hike after leaving Prescott. Parked my rental car at Midgely Bridgely and headed up the Wilson Canyon Trail. The creek was flowing, and little waterfalls tumbled over red rock. Blackfoot daisies and penstemon were in full bloom. Higher up in the canyon, the dark sky unleashed curtains of snow that melted quickly as they hit the ground. The trail eventually gave way to a cairned route, and I scrambled up the north fork creek bed to the 5000 foot level among towers of red rock and cliffs. Returned the same way, then made the long snowy trip home over the Mogollon Rim.
