Was able to lock down plans with S & B to hike a loop with some arches in the Goldfields. I've done a couple of hikes in the Goldfields but most of this route was new to me. Parked at the designated parking area off 1356. I saw their vehicle coming towards the parking area and 10 minutes later I was wondering where they went after they didn't show up. I drove a short distance up 1356 and they were hiking down the road, parking further up. After that minor snafu and introductions, we were off. Started on 1356 then cut over to the Willow Connector. We then jumped on the Frankie Goes to Hollywood trail (no clue how it got its name), then over to my favorite trail of the day Horse with No Name. After a couple of miles on Horse with No Name, we boulder-hopped up a wash then bushwhacked up the side of a cliff to check out the Overlook Arch. While the view was nice, the arch was not worth the effort to get there. We had lunch there before climbing back down into the wash and continuing on Horse with No Name. Spent a little bit of time in Cottonwood Wash before connecting with the Rough and Ready Canyon Trail. We got to the turn for Anniversary Arch and with my tendinitis flaring up in my ankle I sat and relaxed with Richard while the girls hit up the HUGE arch. I saw them up on the ridge and heard them about 15 minutes later. A bit later there was still no sign of them and after calling out to them and no response, we wrote a note in the sand and started back to the truck. No wildlife sightings, but we did come across 2 different groups in Rough and Ready Canyon going to Triple Arch. Temps were great with a nice breeze, racking up some miles on a couple of new trails while meeting some new hiking peeps. Thanks to S & B for the invite, looking forward to another one. :)

This "tadpole loop" starts at the Iron Springs Trailhead west of Prescott, AZ. The "tail" of the loop is the northern 3 miles or so of Javelina Trail #332, plus a few tenths of a mile of Willow Connector Trail #346 to the Cayuse equestrian parking lot. The loop consists of West Lake Trail #351 which starts at the north end of the Cayuse parking lot and ends at Balancing Rock Trail #349 at the south end of the lot. Balancing Rock Trail continues for less than a mile to the NNW, but this hike returns to the Cayuse parking lot by turning south on Balancing Rock Trail. For the 10.6 miles of this hike, return via Willow Connector Trail and Javelina Trail to the Iron Springs Trailhead. For about a 3 mile shorter tadpole loop, you can park where Javelina Trail crosses Granite Basin Road, or park in the Cayuse parking lot and just do the 4.5 mile loop formed by West Lake and Balancing Rock Trails.

First seven mile hike since heart valve repair in November 2023. Started at the Iron Springs Trailhead and headed north on Javelina Trail #332 to its end at Willow Connector Trail #346, then left to the end of Trail #346 at the Cayuse Trailhead near Granite Lake. After turning around on Trail #346, passed the junction with Javelina Trail, then turned back again when the trail started to go downhill toward Willow Trail #347, so that the total would be nearly seven miles. I should have just turned right when I reached Trail #346, because Willow Connector is a road between the Cayuse Trailhead and Javelina Trail.

Wildflowers Observation Moderate
All along Javelina Trail, there were many plants with small white flowers on 8-12" stems, plus various individual flowering plants on both trails (see photos). South of Granite Basin Road: several spreading plants less than an inch off the ground with lots of very small white flowers, quite a few prairie verbena, and a few plants with yellow or white flowers. North of Granite Basin Road: a few dandelions and a single Indian paintbrush.

My week to pick, I threw out four different possibilities, and both of my co-hikers chose this option.

It was chilly for the first hundred yards, perfect on the way to the target, and then warmed up with no clouds and little breeze on the return. There was a little mud here and there, which was easily skirted by two of us.

I enjoy the geology out here; I find it different from most of that in the Supes, right across the street. We made our way out and up to the Overlook Arch. Joe took the direct route up the ridgeline, while Linda and I traversed the north slope before climbing up to the ridgeline. There were, in fact, two different arches up here, both large (not) and spectacular (not), but the geology in the area was grand.

After an early lunch up there, we made our way back, hitting different trails. I don't know how anyone keeps track of all the different trails out here. Once again, we passed through quite a few areas of interesting geology.

We arrived at a packed trailhead of ATVs, Jeeps, and horses. Luckily, I think we only passed two horses while on our loop.

Good times out there!

Two of us enjoyed this hike; one... not so much. I'll let you guess based on their triplog. If you were with us, the *itchin would have given it away five minutes into the hike (and maybe on the ride in).

The final leg of our 58 mile loop around Prescott, started at the Peavine TH in the low 40's.

The low morning sun cast intriguing shadows on the rocks and trees around Watson Lake. The lake was busy with waterfowl of all types. Willow Lake was just as thick with ducks and geese.

We climbed out of Willow Lake, to Emery Riddle and an RC plane doing aerobatics.

The middle section today was a pleasant mix of tall grasses, mixed conifer, rolling hills, and long views.

After lunch we made the final push ending in a gorgeous stand of pines.

It was great catching up after five weeks away from the gang.

Good times gentlemen :y:

Joe suggested the PCT earlier in the year and Bruce and I jumped on board. Bruce and Route Editor broke it into three day hikes for us. This was our third and final section. This one had the most street walking but was still enjoyable with the company I had. The diverse terrain, Joe's singing capabilities and mirthful sense of humor, Bruce's cerebral conversation, and me to keep balance :D, I found hiking the Prescott Circle Trail quite entertaining. Dallin and I have very different capabilities and both did the PCT we were capable of :o  . Even this one I had to do as a slackpacker. My hats off to Dallin and the real PCT.
Another enjoyable day with Joe and Bruce in the Arizona Outdoors... :y:

We brought the PCT Trail full circle. Today was the 3rd leg Bruce created breaking the PCT into 3 reasonable segments for day hikes. I enjoyed the entire circle. That said this would be the area least appealing to most.

Started out in the first cold weather morning of the season. 'Twas spectacular skirting Watson & Willow lakes. The tail end of Autumn Foliage had the massive cottonwoods screaming y(h)ellow in the low morning sun.

The majority of the hike along Pioneer Pkwy, Williamson Valley Rd and a local neighborhood would unlikely interest the masses. Personally I enjoyed seeing how it connected but wouldn't be jumping for a redo.

We hiked this man club style doing each segment in the direction of the most aeg. Which was an appreciated group tactic to keep me from crying like a baby👶

Thx to B&D for setting up all the necessary shuttles!

1st trip
We've had this on our TO DO list ever since we saw it posted and boy was it a winner. I think the previous hikers trip reports were holding out on us as to how beautiful this "keep on giving" figure 8/loop was as we were pleased with each corner we turned, each hill we crested, each valley we went thru and then to top it off, there were wildflowers, water in the arroyo, cool-shaped clouds, great temperatures and a really awesome arch. Other than the humidity, it couldn't have been a better day. Plus, after a little extra route finding, I was able to visit the bedrock bench that I was last at in 2010. So thanks Kelly for a great day in the Goldfields and thanks for dinner after.

Oh ya, the hike. Starting out on the road you eventually hang a left and head west altho we went a little further and Kelly took a look at RS to discover we SHOULD have taken that first turn. It was very green out already as we headed west for a bit before coming to another section to head west again as I wanted to do the Figure 8/Loop that way so we could hit the Arroyo on the way back if I felt up to it. You eventually come to a little canyon like area that you hike through so that was a pleasant surprise. You go up and down a little and have great views to the north. Eventually you end up doing a little road walk before heading north toward a gold faced mountain.

It was a little climb up to here where you get right below the rock face before heading up above it to the huge bedrock area that Kelly and I were anxious to see. It was so cool and the views :y: . The clouds were pretty awesome too and then as we topped the bedrock area we even got some wildflower action as we made our way down the back end. After crossing the wash which you could take toward Top Hat we continued north on familiar ground to the intersection with the top part of the loop. I didn't think there was anything of interest and thot we would have to bushwhack after crossing the wash but we decided as long as it looked like a good trail we would see where "the boys" went. Needless to say, sure glad we decided to proceed.

We had lunch on top of some folded bedrock with views in all directions. It was still overcast so everything seemed extra colorful. In fact, I'm having to tone down the colors in my pictures as the camera seemed to photograph in such a saturated way. After lunch we walked thru one of those interesting areas where the ground is somewhat void of vegetation and there are little rocks and some lava-looking boulders scattered about. Luckily the trail went the whole way as I don't think we crossed over the deepest part of the wash. Kelly went and took a picture of her cracked boulder and we checked out the tunnel we think is so cool before continuing our way around this little mountain. We saw a cave above and I zoomed in and we also saw a little arch.

As we were hiking ahead of us to the left we could see a great stand of saguaros on the hillside. Little did we know we would get to hike right next to them. That's the second time when we saw something cool from a distance and then found ourselves hiking next to it (the huge bedrock face of the mountain earlier and now this). Once again we would cross over a wash and alongside another mountain. It seemed like we would go up about two mountains and then down into these little valleys. It was a constant blitz of really cool stuff to see :y: . In fact, when I talked to two horseback riders, they made the same comment. I do wonder if the horses wear different shoes to hold onto that bedrock, especially when they're going down it? Just before meeting up with them we saw the middle line of the 8 but opted to continue on our loop since we still wanted to go see the Arroyo.

The horses went one way and we went the other way. I think their way was the short cut but once again, glad we went the day we did as we got to see the Window Arch. Kelly had walked right by. I think I had it marked on RS who was barking at me. So we had a little fun in that. We saw the inch worm earlier. After making a bit of a turn to the east and around we reached a wash and intersection where I thot there was a trail over to the Crystal Arroyo so we proceeded over there. It did have water in it but not as much as I had hoped. We took a short break here; it was really nice. The next goal was to find the long bedrock bench I had been on back in 2010 with Kat, Bruce, Ambika and johnr1. We just had such a wonderful time there so I wanted to re-live that moment for a moment.

At the end of the Crystal Arroyo trail I felt we should go off trail to the bench but just wasn't sure; after all, it's been seven years. We ended up on the Golden Eye Trail as we went south and then east getting further away from the Waypoint I had marked. We backtracked UP hill and came to the area where we cross over to the bench with a slight detour to check out a possible route to Helmet Rock. I said to Kelly, "today?!" and she said "yes if it looked like we could make it easily from here". We went north to an edge and easy was definitely not to be. So we headed back toward the bench. We sat for awhile but since it got chilly we left and headed back to the Arroyo.

We got to the intersection we had been at earlier and then continued southish on part of the trail we had been on before when we were out here. It was a fairly quick couple of miles when we were "hiking for beer". The sun started to come out by this point but it never got warm. I never took off my outer shirt the entire way and though the time doesn't show it, Kelly kept up a pretty good pace; mostly so I wouldn't dally with my camera too long  and as you all know, that's a tall task.

I think this ended up being my longest hike since August 2014 when I did some AZT that was around 15 miles. So that's two weekends in a row of long hikes this year... then again, the elevation and trail conditions made that very doable. I'm still working on the many, many photos I took and it's been fun editing them as it was a beautiful hike. The videos could be awhile as usual. I can't wait to see them myself.

Most of this area was closed due to the Doce fire but it reopened last Thursday. You encounter the edge of the Doce fire near the north end of Mint Wash trail and some areas where you see fire retardant residue.

Enjoyed the area and views - it reminded me a bit of the Payson trail system (PATS).

Sam & I did this as well as parts of other trails to complete this NW segment of the Prescott Trail. We started at a small trailhead at the end of Katahn Rd. We first hiked on the Willow Trail #347. At .62 miles the Ho-Kay-Gan Trail #341 went right. At 1.42 miles we passed under some power lines and at 2.05 came to a junction with #347 again. We continued straight on #347. In about .1 miles we came to a junction with #346 the Willow Connector. We followed that through a gate and immediately turned left onto the Javalina (Circle) Trail #332. We followed this to Granite Basin Road where we turned around. On the way back we turned right at the junction of #347 and #341 about .1-.2 miles past the gate and took the "short cut" back to the trailhead. There were some nice views of Granite Mountain and Thumb Butte on the hike and the weather was great.

Hiked a loop from Williamson Valley TH: 308 - 345 - 351 - 346 - 341 - 347 to Willow TH - 347. All washes are completely dry. Only met 4 bikers 6 times on the middle section of #347 and some locals walking their dogs, children and themselves on the backyards (northern) section of #347.
Beat my last year's weekend hiking distance record.
