Surprisingly full parking lot for a weekday as in no spaces to be had on arrival...though several groups were on their way out so spaces appeared quickly.

Saw several folk while doing the loop and a couple of pups, but I wouldn't consider the trails crowded with a steady stream of individuals.

The walk up to the ranch ruins goes by quickly with gently graded elevation - immediately after the ranch ruins, the trail climbs aggressively to attain the ridge and junction with the National Trail/Maricopa Trail. The winds were blowing strongly up on the ridge, with surprisingly good visibility all around.

The National Trail is in great shape, possibly benefitting from the recent National Trail Trek. After cruising a short distance on the ridge, picked up the prospector loop/Lost Ranch Mine trail back down off the ridge (steep, but not too many loose sections). I didn't realize how many abandoned mines/mine shafts are on South Mountain - several of which are right off the trail.

It's probably worth mentioning that the Pyramid Trailhead is now called the Bursera Trailhead. The approach to the Lost Ranch ruins begins with the Bursera Trail out of the parking area (rather than the Pyramid Trail) There is no more signage for the Pyramid Trail, it appears to have been renamed the Gila Trail, though this is not reflected on the maps available from the City of Phoenix.

Not a bad way to spend a few hours midweek!

This time of year, it wasn't strange driving through south central Ahwatukee at 0430, but I've noticed that the people who live there are peculiar. : wink : Traveling north from the Loop 101 on 17th Avenue, I had to abruptly swerve, just missing a stray dog on the street. I think it might have been a rez dog, or possibly a collarless Heeler. Thank goodness I missed it because that would have ruined an otherwise perfect morning. SoMo has really desiccated over the last few weeks. Hopefully the dry grass in the preserve doesn't get ignited by a careless visitor, hobo or dorky pothead who drove over straight from Story. There was one early bird descending the Pyramid Trail, but I didn't see anyone else until near the end of Bursera. An early start going CCW in middle May works well on this loop to minimize the amount of sun exposure. This hike will likely get bumped to third most challenging of the listed South Mountain - Hikes, once the SoMo Infinity Loop guide is added to the database.

I sort of underestimated this loop and hiked until dusk... But still didn't miss dinner. :) The Ma Ha Tauk Perimeter was more hilly and challenging than I'd remembered. It's very similar to Bajada (better isolated trail) and the Desert Classic (not as good as either). For me, Alta including Maricopa Peak is the second best route in SoMo after MLC because of the lack of mountain biker hoards. National near San Juan Lookout had some trail reworked, essentially redirected out of the ditches, which was needed. The Alta and Ma Ha Tauk trails have been rerouted or relabeled some, respectively. The new parking area is open, I think labeled as San Juan Bike Hub. Surprisingly nice temperature and breezes for late March, but the wildflowers in this area aren't as prolific as last spring.

Three purpose hike. Wanted to give some love to the National. It’s been along time since I’ve hiked this trail. Also, wanted to finish off this section of the MT. Finally, I wanted to see what it felt like backpacking in preparation for an AZ Trail segment.

Got to the “TH” around 7am. Parked on the side of the road a little bit out side of SoMo park and picked up the Maricopa Trail as it entered the park. This gave me some added mileage with the MT (maybe 1.5 miles) and because of where it junctures with the National, I missed out on the extreme western portion of the National (maybe .3 miles). National trail hasn’t changed much. I did notice that the ramada that use to be on the side of San Juan Rd. has been removed. The picnic table is still there, but the shading is gone. Hit Goat Hill and took my first break. Met two woman coming down and 1 guy, with his own backpack chilling up top. Trails were busy between Goat and Telegraph, but not too bad elsewhere. Took second break Buena Vista Lookout. Nice to reach spot knowing that most of the climbing was over with. The National is no picnic to begin with carrying an extra 27 pounds didn’t make it any more enjoyable. Wife was there at the end, with a Dew :) to shuttle me back.

Figured out that I have a lot to learn about backpacking. Shoulders and hips very sore at the end. Hats off to all backpackers :app:

Minimal wildlife. Saw 3 coyotes around the mines. Very unafraid. Two of them were actually walking towards me. One had a slight limp :(

Easy jog on the Maricopa. Continued to work this section I short segments. Today I went from Elliot to the fringe of SoMo park. Once again this section was very flat and a road. The most challenging thing was seeing if I could “catch” all the Maricopa signage….fence posts, electrical towers. Not really needed if you’d looked at the route, but it gives you something to do. From Baseline all the way to SoMo is a road (for the most part). Typically, there are two roads paralleling each other and the Maricopa Trail keeps to the eastern road. There is one section where that road turns into a farm field, but the MT still indicates that you should be hiking along the edge of the field.

I had wanted to do the Desert Rose in the EMRP, but the competitive track/Desert Rose TH was closed. NASCAR is a coming in a few weeks and I guess they feel then need to close the area to get set up for the big event. I was kind of expecting that so I went with my second option…the Maricopa Trail. I’m taking this section in small stages and today I did an in and out from Baseline to Elliot. Pretty much a smooth dirt road with no elevation change. 5.4 miles doesn’t get any easier. The first mile they had a couple of signs warning about burrow owls and not to disturb their nests. I saw quite a few spots where the ground was disturbed, but no owls.

Morning hike “on the Maricopa”. Actually started at the Maricopa TH at Tres Rios but not understanding the directions in HAZ I quickly got off trail. I didn’t see the turn heading east up the Salt so ended up going along the 91st and Southern Ave roads. So, no real trail at all. Still, after the fact, I did figure out where the trail goes and will be able to do it correctly on my next go around. Pleasant morning, though no breeze today. No wildlife, though I did get barked at by 6 free roaming Rez dogs. The Tres Rios TH seems to be a very popular staging area for fishing folk.

I’ve hiked all of the 15th Maricopa Trail segment, but never in one go: My second ever HikeArizona triplog (2010) was for the middle segment, from Buena Vista Lookout to Fat Man’s Pass. In 2019, I hiked the third segment from Fat Man’s Pass to Pima Canyon Trailhead, after looping out along Guadalupe Ridge. And in 2020, I hiked the first segment from Telegraph Pass to Buena Vista Lookout, while looping Corona de Loma.

Unlike Thanksgiving 2010, it was cold on Wednesday, with winds 12-15 mph, gusting up to 20 mph. Instead, I waited until Thursday, when it was slightly “warmer”, with winds much less. After what I went through in January, I didn’t need to get sick again.

Compared to previous segments, there were relatively few Maricopa Trail signs. The singletrack is obvious, but when in doubt, look for metal posts with a white N (National Trail) on purple sticker.

Just before Buena Vista Lookout, to the right, and 50 ft. above the road, is an old helipad with a good view of Chinese Wall.

Two loud tuners drove up—the first dangerously over the yellow line—as I approached the lookout. Thankfully, they did a U-turn and left. Maricopa Trail continues just the other side of the parking lot. As the trail dips towards a saddle, it is spotted with dog 💩 and graffiti. Tagging ugly, out of the way, places like underpasses, is one thing, but besmirching nature is a :pk: move.

I only saw three mountain bikes west of the lookout, but east of it MTBs were quite frequent, most of them making the rugged climb west from Pima Canyn TH. (I saw one guy walking his MTB up the “crazy hard” Waterfall).

I probably should have stayed at the Waterfall, but instead I took a sit down break at a bend just before Fat Man’s Pass. Of course, no mountain bikes rode by for twenty-eight minutes. Geez, that granite made my butt sore!

I squeezed through Fat Man's Pass in 2010, but not 2019, so I approached it with some concern. I had to take off my Camelbak, and empty my shirt pockets, but I made it through. Twice. (The second time on video.) Rather than continue on trail, I continued down wash towards Hidden Valley.

The Hidden Valley diversion is essentially the same distance as the Maricopa Trail, with less foot traffic, and no MTBs. Unlike 2020, there was no crowd at the slick rock crevice, so I was able to slide through. (Webber Mine was a tighter fit.)

Just before the trail turns to road at the stone cabin, three foreign gals -- maybe French? -- stopped on their MTBs. Despite not understanding their speech, I understood what they were looking for, and pointed them up National Trail. 😇

Just a few days ago, I mentioned on Haz I had not seen a roadrunner in probably years. Saw two today, including one who ran right in front of me as I finished my hike. (No, a coyote was not chasing him.)

I've now completed 141.27 of 240 Maricopa Trail miles

Not sure what they were, but the north slopes of the Gila Range and Guadalupe Range were *dense* with yellow flowers, even in low temps (substantial?). Up top, on Maricopa Trail, flowers were light.

Today was my 14th counter-clockwise segment of the Maricopa Trail. It is 6 miles, 1700 AEG from Bajada Trailhead to Telegraph Pass. Because it was not quite yet the first full weekend of February, I started from the San Juan Rd. triangle, where a new trailhead is under construction in the intersection's southwest quadrant. Bajada Trail was moapa bladderpod central.

National Trail makes a small climb to a low saddle overlooking a canyon I explored many times while doing my Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway survey hikes, between 2015-2019 [ photoset ] . It was the only area I heard freeway noise. Occasionally a jet on approach to Sky Harbor would fly over and, later near Goat Hill, shooting at the Phoenix PD academy is audible. Otherwise, it was quiet.

The trail splits at the top of the low saddle: Gila Trail right, National Trail left (east).

I remember the 14th Maricopa Trail segment as being a series of steep 250 ft. climbs, with short level respites in between. But the route's elevation profile shows it as one long two mile climb. The steepest part is the first mile after the short saddle, 650 ft. in a mile. Even at midday, there was spot shade in the unnamed east-west canyon.

After the climb, National Trail generally follows the military crest of the Gila Range and Guadelupe Range. (Telegraph Pass separates the two ranges.) That is, National Trail does not go right over the tops of the ranges’ hills, but rather winds to the south or north of each rise, alternating views north across Phoenix with views south across Ahwatukee and Gila River Indian Reservation.

There’s at least six prospects / collapsed mines along National Trail, only one of which is penetrable, and then only for about 20 ft. Take care near the mines, as none have safety covers or fences. I skipped right by them as my mine exploring days [ photoset ] are over. ⚒️

The only hiker I saw before Telegraph Pass was on Lost Ranch Mine Trail. I saw no mountain bikes on National Trail: That would be a tough ride.

As I have on every other previous occasion, I walked right past the Goat Hill summit trail. (It’s a bit hidden behind a palo verde.) For such a small "peak", Goat Hill has great views -- despite the pollution over Phoenix. I could hear shooting at the Phoenix PD Academy. At least I hope it was the academy ...

I could have used my hiking poles on the climbs, but I was glad to be carrying a Camelbak in lieu of my full pack. Especially over the seemingly endless final two Maricopa Trail miles to Telegraph Pass. I’m still working my way back into post-illness shape. Plus, I was getting hotspots or blisters on my right foot.

I’ve now completed 133 out of ~240 miles of the Maricopa Trail.

@DarthStiller gives a real good description of this segment in the [ Maricopa Trail - Guadalupe/South Mtn/Tres Rios ] guide. For me, it was my 13th segment of the Maricopa Trail.

What does "Feature Offsite is set off" mean when creating a photoset?

Because I’ve been sick the last couple of weeks, I have not got out to do away hikes, or even anything in my "backyard". Even though I am almost fully recovered, I went out despite today being the chilliest morning of the week. Judgment call, but exercise is also important to health.

I couldn’t tell which side of 91st Ave. the trail is officially on. I didn’t see any signs.

On the rocky Salt River jeep trail, my dearth of recent exercise was already telling. 💔

I saw a homeless guy camping next to the Salt River lagoon.

I thought the Maricopa Trail stayed close to the aqueduct, in mixed grass & sand. In fact, it is a concrete bike path on top of the left bank, next to the development's wall.

After a half mile, my way was blocked by a storm channel. I doubled back, looking for a way to the west side of the aqueduct. I saw a board across, but decided to try riding through a concrete ford. No wussing out. I was doing okay, until a second, unexpected, drop into sandy bottom ended my bike’s momentum, but not mine, dumping me in the water. I was soaked head to toe.

My pocket camera was missing. (That’s it, in the video thumbnail.) I spent 15 minutes digging around the aqueduct bottom, but never found it. Supposedly waterproof, it might have continued working. My GoPro took the dunking like a champ. Unfortunately, my iPhone was unbagged in my pants pocket. Though doused, it miraculously didn’t die!

Even though the bike path continues, it soon turns east, becomming the Laveen Channel Wash. (A mistake I made.)

If you look at Google Maps satellite view, everything south of Baseline Rd. is vegetable fields. Not any more. It is being rapidly developed. All those fleeing Californians need places to live.

There is a cross aqueduct at Elliot Rd. There are dry crossings left and right. Continue on the west side of the aqueduct, as it will give you some distance from the many beehives tucked up against the adjacent Loop 202 Freeway. The bees are not aggressive, but if you stop they will check you out. 🐝

After so many uninspiring miles, after crossing under the Loop 202, the remainder of this segment is a relief. Visually. The 110 ft. climb along the lower slope of Alta Ridge, on gravelly single track, was more than I could peddle. Between lack of exercise, and increasing respiratory congestion, I walked my MTB up the climb.

I walked probably half of the grassy mile to San Juan Rd. Even small wash crossings were more than my rapidly dwindling energy level could handle. If it had been the first full weekend of the month, when San Juan Rd. is open to motor vehicles, I would have called my wife for a pickup. Rather than follow the Maricopa Trail’s final mile to Bajada Trailhead, I decided it would be wiser to bail down San Juan Rd.

Eventually, even good grip on pavement couldn’t negate the effects of a slow climb. When I dismounted, I almost fell on my face, my quads were so tight. It was agonizing. Worse yet, even Bajada Trailhead is banned to vehicles most of the month. After a brief rest there, I still had another 2⅓ miles of San Juan Rd. walking to go. But I made it. Hopefully, I don’t get flesh eating virus from the canal water …

This is one biking video you WON'T want to miss! https://vimeo.com/791642038

More of the Maricopa Trail. Last week I finished the section between Pima Canyon and Harmony Park on Lindsay Rd. in Mesa/Gilbert. I needed a little "real hiking" time so decided on the National Trail section from the 202 east.

I'm not terribly familiar with the trailhead area and found out that parking is something of a challenge. Since I got there a little before 7am, it was barely light. I had an idea of where I wanted to park, but getting there wasn't easy. So I ended up parking at Vee Quiva and walking another .5 mile or so along the frontage road.

I started at Ray Rd. and the freeway, which is pretty much an underpass. It was about 40 degrees and clear. I was in the shade but the Estrellas to the southwest were in the sun. The trail meanders through the desert area, much like trails around the base of Squawestewa Peak. At a little over a mile you cross San Juan Rd. for the first time. At about 2.5 miles you cross San Juan Rd. again and come to the Bajada Trailhead. Go right to stay on the Maricopa Trail, straight to take the Bajada Trail. More meandering through the desert takes you to about 3.25 miles where you begin climbing. I stayed on the National Trail until the 4 mile mark. This leaves you part way up the hill. This is about a mile or so short of where I left off previously coming from the other direction.

Very little traffic out here. I ran into two joggers just before the 4 mile mark, a solo hiker just after I turned around, and a mountain biker near the Bajada trailhead on my way back. When I got back, I walked part way up the road toward 51st Ave. to get an idea of where the trail leads. Looks like it parallels the freeway for quite a distance.

I still need to complete the section from Telegraph Pass to a couple miles east of Buena Vista.

Started from Telegraph Pass TH at 7am. Warmer today with a slight breeze. There's room to park several cars there, but not much else. It's just a pullout where the trail crosses Summit Rd. I wanted to go west for several miles since I hadn't previously covered that route. The trail switches back uphill for about .5 miles. At .45 miles there's an old stone ramada. When you get to about .6 or .7 mile you get on the ridgeline and get great views of Phoenix and the surrounding area. Fortunately it was a clear day, little smog. Makes for good photo ops.

I followed the trail along the ridgeline. A little narrow in spots with drop-offs. Rocky, typical of other areas of the National Trail. At 1.5 miles there's an intersection with the Ranger Trail on the north side of the mountain. I kept going until the 2.6 mile mark and returned on the same route. Didn't run into anyone until about the 2.5 mile mark, then ran into a jogger on the way back. Then met about 8-10 people just starting out when I got back to the trailhead.

After a brief break I headed east on the National Trail toward the TV towers. Went about a mile, ran into no one. This side parallels Summit Rd. Shadier than the west side, at least in the morning.

Started up the Bursera trail just before first light. Took it to the National, then hiked west to the junction with the Maricopa trail which is near the west end of the National. I then hiked west on the Maricopa/Ma Ha Tauk Perimeter trail. I kept going west on the Maricopa trail where it splits from the Ma Ha Tauk. Went under the 202 freeway, north along 51st Ave., then west again. The trail parallels a canal which is where I turned around and headed back.
Some new trail for me. Not too exciting. Probably best done during cooler months. :)

Went to the west end of South Mountain Park to hike a few trail sections that I've missed over the years. The one segment I did doesn't seem to be an official trail. I hiked the spur from the Bursera Trail that heads westward and ends quickly at a subdivision that looks like is just finished getting built.

After I got back over the saddle towards San Juan Road, I noticed a trail spur that headed down to what looked like a defunct mining road of some sort. I followed that and took it all the way over to the 202. From there I headed northwest along the 202 until I hit the Maricopa Trail as it exits South Mt. Park. The last time I hiked this segment of the MT, the 202 was under construction and my friend Ted and I had to avoid the workers. things look a litte more normal now.

Headed back to the National Trail and then back to the car. Did a shorter hike this time with the heat and humidity. I was drenched within the first mile and felt drained by the time I was done.

Continued the saga of hiking the Maricopa Trail. Started from the Tres Rios area and hiked eastbound to where Ted and I left off on the MT from South Mountain last May. I planned to park at where GoogleMaps says the 91st Ave Trailhead is, but the dirt road to there is closed for now. That entire section of the MT from 91st Ave to the powerlines has been temporarily rerouted to the south bank of the Salt River until May, according the MT website. Not sure why that is. It took a little to time figure out what to do, but there is a main trailhead right on 91st Ave, so I parked there.

the reroute is along a dirt road on the south bank of the Salt River. It has a lot of gravel and river rock, so it's not too comfortable to walk on. and then there's quite a lot of trash left all around, making for riveting scenery. The reroute connects back to the main trail at the north end of the powerline. From there, it's a 6+ mile hike down to South Mountain. Fortunately, I only went to where we left off from last year, which was about 2 miles short of that.

There's a steady stream of water that parallels the trail and powerline, running northwest into the wetlands. When you start on the powerline, you have to cross at the only spot where a road goes over, but then you're on the wrong side because the MT is on the west side. At the next road I crossed the bridge there and got back on track. On the way back I got stuck and had to use a sluice gate as a makeshift shaky bridge. on the east side of the stream is a paved trail that looks like it circumnavigates a new subdivision. Near the subdivision is where the burrowing owls were. Saw quite a few of them and their burrows around.

The MT follows a series of dirt roads under the powerline all the way down to where is heads into South Mountain Park. The stream of water disappears after a couple miles, but the small canal carrying the water remains. Lots of farm fields growing a crop that was very green. The powerlines took away from the scenery, but there were good views of South Mountain, the Estrellas, and even faraway views of 4Peaks, Supes, central Phx preserve, White Tanks, etc.

Saw the least amount of people on this hike than any other I've done in the last 3 weeks. Two bikers coming the other way the entire time. Saw some walkers on concrete path by the subdivision, but they were on the other side of the stream valley. Very peaceful hike.

Being the first weekend of the month, Ted and I headed back to the San Juan TH to finish the trail we discovered last month at this end of the park. Not really sure if this is a continuation of the Laveen Trail, but it does seem to connect to it. It's a substantial enough of a trail that it does appear to be deliberately made by the COP.

We first hike a few unmarked spur trails that we missed last month once we discovered this trail, then we headed out on the new trail. It basically goes around the hill and then connects to the Maricopa Trail spur from the National Trail. We took the spur west and then walked through the construction area and picked up what is currently the Maricopa Trail from South Mountain over to the Estrellas. We walked along that for about a mile and a half and then turned back. It just follows an irrigation canal under the power lines, and right next to the highway. If you stop to take a picture, you can hear the crackle from the power lines above you.

On the way back along the Maricopa Spur inside SoMo park, we saw an area that looked like it was excavated along time ago by some industrial equipment, most likely for mining. we saw what looked to be maybe a filled in mine or prospect shaft, but nothing appears on the USGS maps. There's a spur on the southern part of my track that shows where we checked this out a bit.

Finished a little early thinking we might hit 10 miles but didn't even do 8.5. I needed to get some extra chores done at home so I decided to leave it at that. The only other option we considered was the spur to the peak west of San Juan TH, but I did that one a while back, and it was getting a bit toasty.
