Wifey hadn’t been to Hutch’s pool and we decided to fix that while the weather was relatively cool. We took the tram to the last stop and hiked from there. Being a Saturday the tram was full and so was Hutch.

We did manage to find a quiet spot for lunch and a little hammock hang time.

The pool was relatively full despite the creek being pretty low. Lots of pools but little to no flow below Hutch.

Spring wildflowers were fairly meh, though there were more than expected considering the dry winter.

The tram was full on the return trip, and we were at first worried we might have to walk back to the visitor center, but somehow everyone managed to get on.

Hiked from Molino Basin to Hutch's Pool, stayed the night, then came down to Sabino Canyon via the Phoneline trail. Rain/snow mix while staying at the pools, the area's first rain in much too long. Saw some rabbits and deer near Molino Basin. Ran into a through-hiker on the Desert Winter Through-hike, a route that connects Saguaro NP East with Joshua Tree National Park.

I’ll call this one the Trans-Catalina or the Tucson R2R. Similar stats. Weather was beautiful. Hutch’s pool was cooler than expected. Romero pools were a little less exciting than when we visited last year.

Would like to do it again when there is more water flowing.

We dropped a car at Catalina and then drove down to Sabino for the start. Saw a couple of road walkers and a biker over the short section of road before taking the Phoneline connector.

Passed 2 other people on the Phoneline then didn’t see another soul until Romero pools.

The trail was easy to follow throughout. Only one spot on the Romero side where we had to backtrack slightly to see that the trail took a high route up from a campsite near a seasonal waterfall (which has prompted folks to tramp out a defined path to its base that looks a lot like the official trail).

Speaking of campsites, lots of great spots along the trail. I marked several on my route.

Overall, a great way to experience the Catalinas.

my folks dropped me off at 7 and i got to it. cold, clear and hardly a breeze made for really ideal weather for a hike across the catalinas. Pretty dry out there at the moment but there was water at Hutch's Pool and a couple spots along the way.

West Fork is a bit brushy with a couple trees down but not too bad. Upper Romero is a bit rough after the fire, but there are parts that are still very nice, including the camping spots. Saw some deer and very very few people. strangely had romero pools to myself on a saturday afternoon.

made good time. felt good :)

Hiked to Hutch's Pool starting at Prison Camp and ending at Sabino Canyon. A perfect weekend! The trail conditions were great and the weather was beautiful. Hutch's Pool had lots of flowing water. The pool itself was probably 8-10 feet deep at the end; even dunking my head, I couldn't touch the bottom. The water was frigid, which was fine for me, but half of our party wasn't comfortable going in past their calves. Either way, dipping your feet is a great way to recover from the backpacking. We left ample firewood (which we found; we didn't chop down anything) for the next party to enjoy some s'mores around the campfire!

Got to Hirabayashi at around 9am with a couple of friend for AZT Passage 11. One of my friends intended to do an ONB and then drive the car to the end for a shuttle. Temps were near freezing at the start, but it felt nice once we got moving.

The first 6 miles, mostly downhill, went pretty quick. Probably an hour and a half. Both my friends ended up turning back, so I was on my own at this point.

The crossing below Hutch's Pool was actually less swift than I expected, and I managed to stay dry. West Fork trail up to Cathedral Rock junction is now without obstacles, thanks to the local trail running group. Filled up water at Cathedral, and started the climb.

I don't know that I've ever not been miserable climbing up Mt Lemmon trail. Started seeing the real snow right before Wilderness of Rocks; there were tracks so it wasn't too bad... Until I turned onto WoR. Trackless.

It was obviously a false assumption, but I figured some of the snow would've melted in WoR, since it's on the south side of the mountain. But that was definitely not true for a lot of the trail. Turns out a lot of the trail is in little valleys, protected by ridges, and whatnot. Struggled to do 2mph through there, and about half way through started doing the math on whether I'd be able to get to Marshall Gulch by sunset. Route finding was even more difficult than when there is not snow, especially where the trail is low in the drainages.

Also got a text from one of my friends checking up on me, finally got one through about a half mile before Marshall Saddle (said he was about 30 minutes from calling SAR). At that point I was in the clear. I was thrilled to find at Marshall Saddle that someone had already made tracks down Marshall Gulch trail, so it was smooth sailing from there, and I even managed to jog a lot of it.

Maybe not the best idea, but it turned out to be quite the adventure, way more difficult than anticipated. At least WoR now has tracks for the next person.

Nice 3 day getaway to knock off a section for AZT In A Day. The section I picked began at Cathedral Jct, below and east of Romero Pass, and ended at the Oracle Ridge TH (about 11.5 mi & 4,000 ft), so I set off a day early in order to camp at my launch point. Since this trip would become multi-day, I decided that a third day would top it off nicely.

Day 1:
Started around 10:30, with 5 liters and a heavy pack. I expected to see much more water, after some heavy rains last month, but I crossed stream only once through the entire canyon. This made day 1 tough, as I hit camp with under 2 liters to get me through the night and half way into tomorrow. Okay, so no food tonight and get out early in the a.m.

Day 2:
Got up, got packed, and got going. By now I had under a liter, 5 miles to go & 2,400ish ft to climb. I guess I was mentally prepared, as it all went just fine water-wise and just seemed like any other hike through the Catalinas. I finished up mid-afternoon, arriving to find a post hike BBQ happening. Kim, one of the trail stewards for the area was cooking burgers & dogs, she also had chips, cookies and lots of water (my favorite menu item at that time). I took her up on a burger which I adorned with a slice of spam and an envelope of tuna, and instantly vacuumed down. Now back to feeling sub-human, I continued to graze for the next hour or two. I hung out with the trail peeps until sunset, setup a functional, cold camp and zoinked-out.

Day 3:
04:43, Woke to a squawking turkey, immediately followed by a screeching owl. Not sure what was going on there, but my heart was pumping, so I got up. The turkey must have won (or at least survived) the earlier argument, as he started back up at around 05:00 and continued until the time I left.

I had to gamble on the best route down, due mainly to water issues, and ultimately decided on the Box Camp Trail. For those who have never done it, The Box Camp is 30% Disneyland (the upper) and 70% Hell, so a decision to take it is not made lightly. I won't go too much into it rather than to say that it's far worse now than my previous trip, and that I've probably made my last pass there.

By the time I hit the West Fork, it was in the 80 deg range, under full sunlight. I took a minute at the junction there to assess my egress. My god was it steep, and upon consulting my Guthook app, found that I had over 6 miles & 2,400 ft to go. $#$#*&^!!!, I said, then put my head down and made the final push. Miles don't much bother me, I can do them 16 hours a day, but there's something about climbing out to finish a hike that just isn't natural (to me anyway). Anywho, I made it out around 17:00, and as tough as the last few miles were, I was bummed out to be going home.

took advantage of lower than usual temps to squeeze this loop in one more time before the infero sets in. ran it clockwise for the first time and this way felt tougher to me. did a side trip out to Hutch's Pool for the first time in years...still gorgeous!

saw a nice big LOUD rattler on the way back from the pool. i think it was a mojave

got hot towards the end. the falls were jammin, but that is to be expected on a gimme weather day like today.

didn't feel too good today but had a lovely trip nonetheless

2 nights and 3 days out in the Catalinas

Day 1
~5 miles to camp

Hit the Romero Canyon Trail at 5p Friday night from Catalina State Park with a few good friends.

Tough hike up with heavy packs filled with extra water, since we weren’t positive on the water situation at our first camp. Still had sunlight a little past Romero Pools but not for too long.

Made it ~5 miles and ~2000 ft elevation gain to Old Trail Camp around 8p and I felt like I was moving pretty good. Still took longer than I thought and hiked the last 45 minutes in the dark. Rest of the crew made it by 8:30.

Great campsite in a grotto of trees right on the trail - you can’t miss it. Lots of space, nice fire pit, and best of all, pools with a running spring right behind the site. Not big enough to swim but perfect for pumping water.

We did find a black rattlesnake under the pile of old stuff left by a big rock.

Day 2
~4 miles to camp, then ~6 miles RT to Hutch's Pool

Finished off the last ~2 miles of Romero Canyon Trail, all uphill and over the pass.

Connected on West Fork Trail at the top of the pass, descended around 2 more miles to reach our Saturday night camp, at the junction of West Fork and Cathedral Rock trails. Dropped packs here and set up camp.

Another really nice, shaded, large campsite with an established fire ring. Only downside was no water source, though a note we found in a Geocache said there was an accessible pool a mile or so down the trail. We never looked hard for it since we had already planned to day hike to Hutch's Pool and back.

We set off the rest of the day to make the 6 mile round trip hike to Hutch’s Pool for water, swimming and cliff jumping. It lived up to the hype.

Nice hike, all downhill getting there. About half of it with tree cover and half exposed as you near the pools.

Only saw 2 day hikers at the pool. We submerged some beers to refrigerate and waded down to the deep end.

Thanks to whomever left the rope on the boulder to get up to the cliff jumping spot. It’s a little tricky from the water but totally doable. A bit easier if you walk all the way around from the backside, but what’s the fun in that?!

Hike back up to camp is all slightly uphill and tiring after a long day but the trip to Hutch's Pool is definitely worth the effort. You could also camp right there on the beach, but you'd likely have company.

Day 3
~9 miles to car

Completed this as an out-and-back trip, hiking ~2 miles up and over the pass on West Fork Trail and ~7 more down Romero Canyon Trail to the parking lot.

Stopped at Romero Pools to cool off on the way back. Saw more folks there and on the way out than we had seen all weekend.

After some well-earned victory beers from the cooler, had to hit up In-N-Out, right across the street.

This was a short gear test trip since my friends and I hadn't been backpacking since November. We wanted to hike the Superstitions but the unreliable water out there after such a long time without rain led us to this awesome backpacking trip. I was nursing a recently sprained ankle :--: so I was happy to keep it short and sweet. We paid and parked in the Sabino Canyon visitor's center lot then took the tram to the end to start out hike. We hiked up Sabino Canyon Trail #23 up then hooked onto the East Fork Trail towards Hutch's Pool. We ended up finding a great creekside campground enroute and set up camp. The icy creek was perfect for aching feet and chilling beers. After getting settled, and realizing how cold it felt sitting in the shade of the canyon, we grabbed our daypacks and continued on to Hutch's Pool. There were a few interesting campsites along the way but ours seemed the best. Lots of water in the creek from the visitor's center, all along our trail and tons at the pool. :y: The night got really cold — we woke up to frost on our tents and chunks of ice in our nalgenes, and a strong determination to gear up before our next cold weather trip. The hike out was perfect weatherwise. We enjoyed the short hike and tram ride back to the car. We stopped at Tanias33 in Tucson for (vegan!) burritos and then headed back home. Great trip.

Summitting Rattlesnake Peak has been on my to-do list ever since I noticed it whilst hiking near Hutch's Pool a couple of years ago. "So", I thought to myself, "Why don't I link the two together?" I generally prefer loops to out-and-backs, and looking at the topo it seemed feasible. I followed the route description and GPS file posted here to gain the summit. I came prepared with leather boots and gaiters; but, surprisingly, neither seemed necessary. The bush whacking out of Pima Canyon (e.g. Table Mountain, Prominent Point) is way more heinous. The descent northward to Hutch's Pool was uncharted territory for me. Hoping I wouldn't get cliffed out, I used a topo map to try and keep my path from getting too steep. Fortunately I didn't encounter anything more technical than easy Class 3 (a conservative categorization). It took me 3 hours to reach the summit, and an hour to descend to Hutch's Pool. From there it was smooth sailing on the West Fork and Sabino Canyon trails, followed by another few miles on the tram road (I skipped the Phoneline Trail due to time constraints).

P.S. If someone tells me how, I can upload my GPS track for this loop

Started from Ventana trailhead. Went up and took a nice break at the Window. Hit the summit at Window peak and saw Ladybugs!! From there we made it up to the sanctuary and finally to the actual summit. Rope was in good enough condition for us to use. This was my 2nd time up here- the first time I didn't go to the actual top. This time Trevor forced me to make the final maneuver up to the true summit and man was it worth it. Quite the adrenaline rush and I'm not sure I could have done it without a lot of motivation. Stayed the night at the Sanctuary. Beautiful area back there, I will return. Went down through Sabino for our way out. Jumped into Hutch's and took the lazy man's tram for the way out. All in all a very rewarding two days!

This is an awesome loop that will definitely be repeated in the spring when more water is flowing. There's amazing views the entire way. Wildlife was good today-- we saw a bunch of deer, a roadrunner with a fresh lizard kill, and a snake scare a wren out of a saguaro. I didn't know snakes could climb cactus. We only ran into a handful of other hikers all day.

Big loop with Kyle on a Friday. We started from the Sabino Canyon Visitor Center and made a counter clockwise loop. We made stops at Seven Falls and Hutchs Pool. Both were very cool and had some pools of water. Not much was flowing. We finished our loop along Sabino Canyon. This is a really beautiful area that I hope to return to someday.

We hiked from the parking lot to Hutch's Pool. The pool was amazing. It was cold, but not unbearable, and felt perfect after hiking under the AZ sun. I was very thankful for the cairns that people before us had stacked as there were a few parts we weren't sure if we were on the path. Also, in the description of Hutch's Pool on this site, towards the end, it states that the path to Hutch's Pool is 10 minutes after the river crossing. It is actually only 5 minutes, watch for the cairns or you will miss the path.
