Morning hike at SoMo. Did a loop involving the Bajada Trail. Started from the Ranger TH around 6:30. Cloud coverage and city lights made a headlamp unnecessary. Took the Ranger up to the National and then over to Goat Hill. I was there in time for the sunrise, except….there wasn’t a sunrise. I was expecting some color. Nothing. Very anemic. Continued on the National to what I’m calling Goat Hill II. This hill is just to the west of the Prospector Loop. I don’t think it is as high as Goat Hill, but the trail is more direct when ascending it. Continuing on the National I, for whatever reason, got caught up with looking at the mine pits. There are four obvious ones (between Prospector and Bursera) that are adjacent to the National. The first one is just past Goat Hill II. I never realized that there was another hole just on the other side of the trail. There is now a faint trail that leads to it. Then, as I continued west I saw another good sized opening a ways off the trail. Took a little bit of scrambling, but I was able to make my way down to the opening. From a distance it just looked like a minor opening, but it turned out to have a decent drop as well. I couldn’t see the bottom. Picked up two annoying thorns in one shoe, but it was still worth the side trip. Eventually made my way to the Bajada and had an uneventful up and down on my way back to the Ranger Trail and then to the TH. When nearing end of the National I came upon the “new” (to me) addition to the Gila. Hopefully, they are finally done with extending it. I can’t imagine what more they can add to it. Noticed some minor reroutes on the National and Bajada. Nothing major. The trails don’t stay too far from the original. I imagine the changes were erosion related.

Nice loop. Definitely prefer going clockwise. Temps were great. In the 60’s to start and probably not much higher at the end. I will never complain about clouds. Got windy half way through and it felt like I was hiking in a mini haboob at the end. No wildlife. Encountered 3 hikers and then as I was passing the Bursera junction I came upon a Ranger and 5 people who were getting ready to do some maintenance on the trail. :yr:

1st trip
We started at the Trailhead Parking at the San Juan Road Gate, where the Steven Mather Drive ends and the Telegraph Pass Road starts heading up the hill. There is usually ample parking at this trailhead.

We hiked up the Alta trail to its intersection with the Hau’Pal Loop trail, then headed west along the ridge. From this ridge, the views are tremendous to the north across Phoenix and Glendale, with a panorama from the White Tank Mountains to the west, the city peaks of Shaw Butte, North Mountain, Piestewa, and Camelback, with the mountains of Cave Creek in the background, sweeping all the way to the Four Peaks in the east. The ridge is challenging walking, up and down, sometimes steeply.

The sounds of Shooting at the Phoenix Rod and Gun Club and the Phoenix Police Academy just below on Olney Ave. are significant on a Saturday morning. From this high viewpoint, it seems like the Western Canal runs along the surface and suddenly disappears at Dobbins Road, but it actually continues westward, in smaller canals.

An hour into our hike, we encountered the trail heading down to the 19th Ave Trailhead. It was marked Hau’Pal loop trail. From that intersection, the Hau’Pal Loop seems to head both east and west along the ridge and north down to 19th Ave. I was hoping to write a current guide of the Hau’Pal, but it will have to wait until I can hike the rest of its branches.

The trail is rugged, but the views are fantastic. It’s a knife edge ridge so you see north to the Phoenix panorama and south into the park. Looking down, one could see that the 19th Ave. parking lot is full, and cars come in circling, looking for spots. 19th Ave. is indicated “No Parking,” but there is side street parking a quarter mile away at Lodge Drive by the T-Bone Steakhouse. At times, a little scrambling is necessary.

About 2 hours into our hike, the trail switchbacks sharply off the ridge, down to its intersection with the Crosscut Trail. That intersection indicates the Crosscut goes east and south, while the Hau’Pal heads north toward the 19th Ave. trailhead. HAZ shows the trail to the right and left as tha Ma Ha Tuak Trail, but another trail (Link) now has that name. The printable trail map provided on the City of Phoenix site is pretty useless here. We followed the Crosscut Trail over to corrals where it intersected the Ranger Trail and continued a short distance to the Holdout Loop Trail. The Crosscut Trail continues east from that junction, which doesn’t match any maps, but it is a popular horseback trail.

We followed the east branch of the Hideout Loop Trail intending to follow an old HAZ route indicating an intersection with the Las Lomitas Trail, but that trail has been abandoned and obliterated. We eventually picked up the Las Lomitas Trail, and followed it back to the Kiwanis Trailhead, then continued west on the Las Lomitas to its intersection with the Ranger Trail. After a short stint on the Ranger heading south, we came to the start of the Bajada Trail, which took us back to the car. These valley trails seem to experience a lot of renaming and rerouting and cross several now-closed roads and pass several closed picnic areas. I’ll try to get some complete updates to HAZ guides over time.

Posted a Meetup for a potentially rainy day. Sign ups were slow till the forecast became favorable. Hit the 10 max out. Half actually showed. Nothing shocking there. 🤷‍♂️

Hike got off to a very rocky start as two participants started screaming at each other. SMH So we took National Trail-Bajada-Alta. Alta is where it gets steeper with switchbacks.

We then took a social trail to a side viewpoint. Next was the peak. Nice lil bonus challenge. After that, it was mostly chill. A couple of those who came out were complaining it was a bit hot. This was my return to PHX.

Today, I hiked the first & last third of Hau’Pal; plus bits of Alta, Bajada, Max Delta and Crosscut.

T-Bone no longer exists: It is being remediated. Same with most of Warrior.

If you are tempted to use the trailhead on 19th Ave. -- instead of Vista or San Juan -- don't drive straight down 19th Ave. For one, it gets medieval between I-10 and I-17, but worse is the at grade RR xing at Lower Buckeye. Ugh. Fifteen minute delay while they shuffled cars. Instead, take 7th Ave., then bop over to 19th on Southern.

Normally, I like a bit of warmup before a climb starts, but Hau'Pal heads straight up. Trail's in good shape with some step-ups. At the top, Hau'Pal splits left & down. I went right, along the ridgeline.

Alta was in its usual good shape, though there were a few eroded spots. (Obviously from previous monsoons ...) Halfway down, I ate lunch at the "stone chair".

On sat view, the San Juan triangle is still unfinished. In reality ... still unfinished. Which may explain why I saw tissues dotted throughout my day. 😑

If you hear shooting, no worries: That is the police academy, ~⅔ mile away.

On the way home, I stopped at Mickey D's. No shamrock shake!? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Got started on Bursera around 0745. Nice clouds to the west, but way too warm. I had no hope for rain since the needles of all the barrel cactus were not red. They were their usual dusty grey/pink, which means hope is futile. Oh well. Did get about five minutes of barely a sprinkle while on Bursera.

Took Gila west. Chatted with my ranger friend about the reroute of Gila west from Bursera to the saddle. I mentioned in a triplog a couple of years ago this would eventually happen, and now they are working on it. It’s being shifted slightly north and off the private property. They are about halfway done with the reroute, which he was working on today.

Took National north/west. They also did a slight reroute at the saddle where the trail drops down into San Juan Valley. Added two switchbacks (if you count corners). Didn’t really seem necessary, the original alignment was fine, but now National has a couple hundred feet of added distance.

East on Bajada. I hate Bajada. I get its function in the trail network, but this trail is beyond boring. At the “triangle lot” there was an RV with racks of clothing in front of it and people seemed to be selecting clothing. Weird. The clouds went away while I was on Bajada. I do not like sunlight very much.

Headed up Ranger. Chatted with another park ranger for a moment. I don’t think he was very familiar with the trails, but was friendly. It felt hot while hiking uphill. East on National. Down Gila/Pyramid to finish. Some clouds reappeared while I was headed downhill. Saw one snake near the trailhead. Winter is over.

The delayed cloud cover and rain was a nice and unexpected bonus. We didn't have time to tag Maricopa Peak, which was fine since we just did it in late March.

Opted for a large loop in the western part of South Mtn. Started from the Bursera TH a few minutes after 0800 and headed up Lost Mine. East on National, with a side trip to Goat Hill. Down Ranger. Cut over to Bajada and took that to the new lot.

Paused for a moment to take a phone call from my real estate agent. She wanted to show me a house via video call at 4pm, yeah, that’ll work, as long as I don’t stop moving. Up Alta, with a side trip to Maricopa Peak. Came down the west side of Alta. Saw a transient camping near the bottom of the trail. He was kind of rude, so I texted a ranger about him. Should’ve kept his mouth shut and I would have ignored his presence.

Got onto National. I hate those western miles of that trail. Noticed a new rerouting of Gila, so I hopped onto that. It’s not fully rerouted yet, a portion still crosses private property, but it looks like they are working on it. Got onto Bursera at the big wash, then Bursera Canyon to finish out the loop. Warmer, and less clouds than I was hoping for, but a good day.

met john at ranger trailhead at 0630, since san juan road wasn't open
south mountain park website indicated that it should have been but maybe it hasn't been since the triangle destruction
the new parking area will be pretty nice
the main objective was maricopa peak
ranger and bajada to alta, which has been rerouted from the new parking area
checked out some mines along alta
up the use trail to maricopa peak
found the benchmark once, but couldn't find it today
there is a brand new summit register on the peak
heading down, we considered the over and back, deciding against it given the extra credit
on the return, we continued on the ridgeline to star peak
down the old warrior trail aka t-bone aka hau'pal loop
connector trail to max delta and back to ranger
double digits and a different combo
breakfast burritos at carolina's after
good times, thanks john :)

Alta trail to Maricopa Peak was our main objective for the day. We had to start from the Ranger trail since there was nowhere to park at the triangle and San Juan was falsely advertised as open.
Instead of an over and back we decided to hit Star Peak then descend via the "new" Warrior trail which is now named Hua'Pal.
We took the Connecter trail from the Hua'Pal loop to the Max Delta then made our way back to the Ranger trail which we started from.
Interesting hike on some new trails for me. Thanks Kelly! :)

Started from the Telegraph Pass TH and then just made it up as I went along. Hit up some tread I hadn’t hiked before on the Ma Ha Tuak range. Where the Alta trail reaches the ridge line, a trail heads off along the ridge to the east (while Alta continues to the west). It is not listed on the maps, but is signed on the trail itself and eventually joins into the Crosscut trail. I didn’t take a photo of the signage, but it was Hai … something.

Wanted to get a hike involving the Bajada. Started from the Ranger TH around 5:30. Went up on the Ranger and then over and down on the National. Bypassed Goat Hill (this time) just as the sun was rising. Took Bajada back to the Ranger TH. Looks like they are deconstructing the Alta TH. Not a huge deal as access to it was minimal. There is a slight reroute of the Bajada at the “triangle” on Summit Rd., because the park is building something (new TH?). Except for people on the road, below the Bajada trail and for a parasailer, I didn’t see anyone until I got back on the Ranger trail. Then I saw 15 hikers in that short stretch back to the car. At the same time, also saw a lone coyote fleeing for the wash. Nice loop. Even enjoyed the Bajada this time around.

Actually hiked San Juan Rd. which is parallel to Bajada. Made it from the gate at Summit Rd. to the Ramada about 2.5 miles down the road.
Lots of brittlebush in bloom, creosote and plenty of grasshoppers.
The usual number of bikers.
This is prep for my Fife Coastal Path walk in a few weeks. I'll be posting triplogs and photos as I go.

Today was my 14th counter-clockwise segment of the Maricopa Trail. It is 6 miles, 1700 AEG from Bajada Trailhead to Telegraph Pass. Because it was not quite yet the first full weekend of February, I started from the San Juan Rd. triangle, where a new trailhead is under construction in the intersection's southwest quadrant. Bajada Trail was moapa bladderpod central.

National Trail makes a small climb to a low saddle overlooking a canyon I explored many times while doing my Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway survey hikes, between 2015-2019 [ photoset ] . It was the only area I heard freeway noise. Occasionally a jet on approach to Sky Harbor would fly over and, later near Goat Hill, shooting at the Phoenix PD academy is audible. Otherwise, it was quiet.

The trail splits at the top of the low saddle: Gila Trail right, National Trail left (east).

I remember the 14th Maricopa Trail segment as being a series of steep 250 ft. climbs, with short level respites in between. But the route's elevation profile shows it as one long two mile climb. The steepest part is the first mile after the short saddle, 650 ft. in a mile. Even at midday, there was spot shade in the unnamed east-west canyon.

After the climb, National Trail generally follows the military crest of the Gila Range and Guadelupe Range. (Telegraph Pass separates the two ranges.) That is, National Trail does not go right over the tops of the ranges’ hills, but rather winds to the south or north of each rise, alternating views north across Phoenix with views south across Ahwatukee and Gila River Indian Reservation.

There’s at least six prospects / collapsed mines along National Trail, only one of which is penetrable, and then only for about 20 ft. Take care near the mines, as none have safety covers or fences. I skipped right by them as my mine exploring days [ photoset ] are over. ⚒️

The only hiker I saw before Telegraph Pass was on Lost Ranch Mine Trail. I saw no mountain bikes on National Trail: That would be a tough ride.

As I have on every other previous occasion, I walked right past the Goat Hill summit trail. (It’s a bit hidden behind a palo verde.) For such a small "peak", Goat Hill has great views -- despite the pollution over Phoenix. I could hear shooting at the Phoenix PD Academy. At least I hope it was the academy ...

I could have used my hiking poles on the climbs, but I was glad to be carrying a Camelbak in lieu of my full pack. Especially over the seemingly endless final two Maricopa Trail miles to Telegraph Pass. I’m still working my way back into post-illness shape. Plus, I was getting hotspots or blisters on my right foot.

I’ve now completed 133 out of ~240 miles of the Maricopa Trail.
