Monday hike with Christina. I've been wanting to hike the ridgeline since I first hiked out here in September of 2015! It's never too late and today is the DAY! Woo hoo! Perfect temps. Holiday lite traffic. Plenty of parking at Dreamy Draw when I arrived. So nice. There was a group of like 20 unicyclists prepping to head out on the trails. I chatted for a bit with the guy parked aside of me who was visiting from California. He said this group gets together this time every year in AZ. They hit South Mountain, Sedona, and PMP today. Christina and I headed out through the tunnel on traill 100 under the AZ51 which had a big muddy spot right in the middle, eww. Did the Mercury Mine Loop counter clockwise. And broke off northbound to the Fenceline trail. Followed that and turned pretty much straight up the mountain, a little sketchy at spots. I was getting worried about what the trail back down looked like as we approached the summit. To my surprise, there was another hiker coming up that way, that's a good sign for sure! Chatted with him for a bit until we went our separate ways. Continued on the ridgeline trail to the southwest. Spectacular! Followed the trail along the base of the mountain back to trail 100 and the tunnel back to Dream Draw. What a great President's Day!

Nice trip up Stoney Mountain. I always enjoy this unassuming little summit, but I wish all of my fellow travelers displayed better hiking ethics. Hiking to or from the summit on anything other than the use trail along the ridgeline is not only unsafe, but harms the natural environment.

Last summer, I tried to do less elevation on my hikes to keep it a little easier. This summer, I seem to be doing the opposite, I have been hitting up shorter, steeper trails the last few weeks. Just fine with me! I had not done Camelback in almost two years, so I figured it was a good time to get back now that the heat has thinned out the crowds. Pulled in to the Echo lot a bit after 4, and I was the fifth car there...I was greeted by the park ranger upon hitting the TH, she was sizing me up to make sure I wasn't being a dummy. I told her this wasn't my first trip up, and thanked her for what she was doing, hopefully this is a regular practice and it will save some rescues. Made good time up despite the heat, the last few hundred feet of gain did require a few quick breaks. Spent a few minutes at the top and headed back down. Stopped by Stoney mountain on the way home to get in a little more effort. Didn't see a soul. Good couple peaks!

Got in a good urban double hike this afternoon, started out by Mountain View about 4:30. Second time up Stoney Mountain, this is a fun quick one with good effort. Be aware, there is a good sized bee gathering about a tenth of a mile up the summit spur trail, it is on the left hand side of the trail in one of the numerous rock holes. They were not aggressive, but if you stumbled into the rock it would make for a pretty lousy day. After this quick one, I rolled over to Acoma to start my way up Shadow Mountain. I climbed the main peak, and then proceeded to hit every high point in the area by way of a convoluted loop. Ran into a few folks up on the summit when I had come around for a second trip up. Otherwise, very few other people out on the trail, surprising for such a great weather day.

I'm running out of new trails to do! This was my last set in North Phoenix, and I liked it a lot. Started at Tattered Nest and picked up 100, taking it around the north side of the first mountain, then back into the middle toward Stoney. I really liked getting into this middle section. Unfortunately, later my hike took me up a hill to a house where the trail went away. I spent some time walking the neighborhood near 19th St trying to find a new entry.

Finally I found a new trail section and ran the rest back to my car. In the end, it was a chore trying to get away from civilization at this spot but still worth the stop.

I'm recovering from a twisted ankle from two weekends ago, but wanted to get in some sort of hike to see how the ankle would hold up. Took it easy and guided Olivia up another peak for her to add to her list. She just moved to a new cubicle on the 16th floor with a view to the north. Now she can look out the window and pick out every peak she's been on and today added another one for her.

Parked on Cortez just off of Cave Creek and worked our way east then headed south along Trail 100. Shot up Stoney Mountain and decided to work on our Class III scrambling skills by climbing up the final 40 feet or so instead of taking the trail up to the top. Came down and took 100 straight back to the car. Perfect 60 degree weather with no wind and slightly overcast made for a nice stroll to get out of the house this afternoon.

I only took Miss Ellie puppy with me today. She loves the ridge line trails.
We started at the Dreamy Draw parking lot. We hiked East side of the Mercury Mine Loop to the Stoney Mountain trail Summit. We then did 1 mile of Ridgeline Trail back to the Mercury Mine Loop. We backtracked some to finish the Mercury Mine Loop then back to Dreamy Draw.

I had to be back to town early today, so I though I would hit up some local hikes. Despite growing up in the area and hiking around as a lad, I never made it up Stoney Mountain. This was a fun hike, good steep push albeit short. Nice to only see one other person on the trail. I had parked on Mountain View and made my way over to the 100 and then to the faint but steady peak trail. After I finished, I made the short drive up to the Acoma TH to knock out a big loop around the Shadow Mountain area. I took off up tot he summit, headed south along the ridgeline to the unnamed summit, skirted around the east side, hit up a few more of the high points, climbed up 1779, and circled around for one more trip up Shadow. Great weather, got this in before the storm started up, but there was some real nice wind and some sprinkles as I was finishing up a little after 6. Good stuff!

Pretty mellow hike from Dreamy Draw over to Stoney Mountain. Zipped up Stoney Mountain and came back down and meandered along Trail 100 for a little bit. Turned around and finished off the mine loop. Nice, overcast weather that was perfect for hiking. Nice to get out and stretch the legs this morning. Been doing a lot of squats this week in the gym and my quads are hammered.

Evening hike after all the rain this morning. The gate to Dreamy Draw was shut at 5:30pm. There were a line of cars parked on the side of the road so I joined them. I then made my way toward the tunnel where I crossed the 51. You could tell it flooded earlier today. A lot of sediment washed in. From there I continued and made my way up Stoney Mountain. The sunset was throwing off a soft light and the full moon rose as evening set in. I started my return and looped around the Mercury Mine Trail and made my way back to the jeep. Nice evening.

Started from 19th ave, north of Cactus. Shaw Butte :next: North Mnt :next: Lookout Mnt :next: Shadow Mnt :next: Unamed peaks :next: Stoney Mnt :next: Piestewa :next: Unamed :next: Camelback.

As I was standing on Shadow Mnt looking down at the neighborhoods I noticed a large elephant statue. And then it started moving! I got down as quick as I could to check it out. Turns out it was visiting the mega church on the west side of Shadow and its handler was taking it for a walk.

Ran into Trekkin Gecko along the way. Good seeing you!

Quick little hike to stretch my legs at lunch time. Parked at Dreamy Draw and took Trail 100 under the freeway to start the hike.

Don't know the PC way to say this, but it appears that the northwestern edge of the Dreamy Draw parking lot is the "George Michael/Larry Craig" section of the park. The men sitting in their cars seemed very friendly and appeared to be furtively looking for something. :o
