I was surprised to see snow considering how dry this winter has been but snow fields were frozen and about 4 inches deep in places and as low as about 5800 ft. Pine Butte also had snow on north slope. I have never been to Thicket Spring and I was pleasantly surprised to see some older growth trees. Morning temps were in the 30s and breezy, felt very cold but warmed to the low 60's during the day with bright sunshine. Water flowing at Thicket Spring as well as in the creek bed below. Found deer tracks, coyote tracks and observed some interesting birds. No sign of bear this trip.

Had a go at Saddle Mountain from the Cross F Trailhead earlier in the year and returned for a shorter version of the loop starting at Peeley TH. Sort of a Cornucopia - Thicket Spring and Saddle Mountain Mine Tour Loops combo. Rested my hopes on the sycamores along 25A, and they ended up in the neighborhood of prime. Overall there was more fall color than expected. Got going not long after sunrise and went counterclockwise.

Cornucopia through Thicket Spring not too much fall color. Most of the oaks had dropped their leaves, but in McFarland Canyon near the Sheep Creek jct there was some yellow below the pines. Ascended Sheep Creek to Saddle Mountain Trail, which is my favorite of the bunch. It provides some of the best views of Pine Butte and the Peeley - Sheep ridgeline, and this time around I was surprised by the couple pockets of maples shining bright red.

Left the trail when it seemed the route up the ridge was clear enough. There are just about no good lines through the brush up Saddle Mountain for any sustained lengths. It's one of the rougher bushwhacks, or the roughest, compared to the other summits in that part of the Mazzies, but it is a short one. I think it's overall easier than North Peak, for instance, even if the going is slower. Great views all around but the pano is probably better from the tougher, shorter, southern summit.

Breaked in Potato Patch before setting off again down 91. Saw the only person of the day before heading down to the Sunflower Mine area, a lone backpacker who I thought might be hiking the AZT until I saw him when I was driving out around the 87/Ord turn off. The Mining road that connects 91 to 25A was maintained some this winter but is already in need of some more clearing. It is easy to follow, however.

Along the 25A to Cornucopia under the yellow sycamores. Water flowing down the whole way. No idea how or why anyone drives to the end. Up Cornucopia the leaves dulled as I climbed. Made it back to the TH and it was still empty.

Birthday run for a friend who had never run in the Mazatzals. Decided to start at Mount Peeley TH, and I suggested the 7ish mile Cornucopia/Thicket lollipop. I had run down Cornucopia a few years back as part of an 18 mile fun run, but haven't been south of Peeley since. Stopped at Thicket Spring, and was surprised to find water. Guess last weekend's storm was enough, or it's fairly reliable.

Headed down to the bus for a bit, then back up via W Fork Trail. Thicket Spring trail is pretty overgrown these days, and it's easy to see why this is no longer the AZT alignment. Not as scenic as Cornucopia, although the last half mile or so wasn't bad.

Didn't see anyone else out there until about a half mile from the TH, when we saw another runner we happened to know...she was flagging the turns for this year's fun run, which as it turns out, would be the next morning.

Got a late start and when I turned on to FR 626 (off AZ-87) I was granted permission to pass on down to the Peeley TH by the FS crew that was manning the gate. When I asked if the road was closed, TK (clearly the crew chief) said, "sort of, but we'll let you through because you are special." :sl: No truer words have ever been said.

There was one vehicle at the Peeley Trailhead that was leaving as I got there at 11 AM. Temps were a decent 82 degrees. FR 201 was a bit more of a challenge this winter with 4-6 inches of snow on the final 2 miles that have Northward exposures. I would call this a doable but not advisable sedan worthy road this time of year.

Even though my Route Scout and map are working fine I only put it together today that this is the road that popped me out of Gold Ridge and plunked me down South Fork on that loop a month or so ago. Maybe it's that special thing TK pointed out.

Everything about today was totally uneventful. All three of these trails are in perfectly good shape. There isn't any water anywhere out along the loop, but it was not a suprise. The views are pretty good of the Mazatzal peak usual suspects with killer views of the formidable south side of North Peak at the very start/end of the trail.

What was most interesting were the views of Mt. Ord. From way up it looks like the top third was spared from the Bush Fire. I took a picture (saved in the photo set) on the way down 201. It may only be the top thousand feet of prominence that was saved.

Didn't make it to the mine and only saw some very fresh bear scat close to the West Fork/Thicket Springs junction. Not sure I'll do this one again on account of the lack of trees and lack of a great lookout point.

Headed out in to the Mazzies with Kyle & Chumley in search of fall color. We started from the Peeley TH and headed in with a steady pace. We dropped into and out of canyons as we headed for Squaw Flat. There was some nice color in a few sections but nothing mind blowing. Squaw Flat would have been stunning before the Willow Fire. From there we headed back and opted for a loop taking us over to the Cornocopia Trail. It’s really nice going and most of these trails are in really good condition. We eventually turned back to the north and headed back to the TH. It was nice getting back into the Mazzies and fun to hike with Kyle & Chumley again.

Kyle came up with this one and I'd never done the loop so I thought it would be fun. We headed down from the loop to McFarland and then ventured a mile or so into @jacobemerick -land. I wanted to check out Squaw Flat. This trail has suffered flooding and deadfall, plus standard mazzy overgrowth. Fun stuff. I should come back and go further.

I found cairns at the Sheep Copper Camp junction, but no nice signs. Apparently the AZT folks are a little snobby and if it's not 6-feet wide and brush free, it's not a trail for them! Related note, nice game cam (not sure what it's trying to capture) and a brand new wilderness sign.

Ran into a guy doing a Pine to Roosevelt hike and he was happy to report that there's water everywhere. All the guthooks water sources were reliable and at least 2-3 more water sources between every one marked in the app. So now's definitely a nice time to venture into the desert!

Wanted to knock out a gaggle of trails in the southern Mazatzal area. Most of them are AZT, so I figured a +30 mile day wouldn't be terrible. Today my feet disagree, but details.

Little Saddle Mountain #244
Did most of this trail lit by headlamp + full moon. Seemed pretty. Along the creek things got a little overgrown and it was hard to navigate in low light. Turned off headlamp at 4:30 and enjoyed the predawn views for the last mile.

Saddle Mountain #91
This trail is legit. Big views, well maintained, and minimal elevation gain. I cruised along this section when I wasn't drinking in the sights. I wanted to make the Story Mine loop at the end for completion sake and regretted it - as soon as the path leaves the AZT it is quickly swallowed up by catclaw. And I didn't even find the mine :(

Sheep Creek #88
Beautiful drop into McFarland. Bit steep, could see the south direction being painful. Headed to Squaw Flat Spring to complete this segment of the trail and was surprised at how easy the way was. Few deadfall, some overgrowth, clear tread. Still no water at the spring so I filtered up at a murky pool on the way back.

Thistle Spring #95 (Sheep Creek :next: West Fork)
Pleasant jaunt along McFarland and then a sudden twist and climb up a dry wash. Legs were starting to get angry here so that climb was not appreciated. There was a tripod set up at the West Fork junction that was weird.

West Fork #260
Short climb and long descent. It's a short one, so there's not much to say. Decent views. I tried to track where 25A came down into the canyon below to pass the time.

Cornucopia #86
Hot climb up a trickling creek. A few sections didn't have any burn damage, so I imagine that this is what the non-ponderosa pine forest areas looked like before 2004/2012 (depending on where in the Mazzies you're looking). Sporadic junipers, willows along the creek, and random tall pines. Could be wrong. Anyways, after the junction w/ Thistle Spring the trail got mean fast. Steady uphill over rolling rocks in full exposure to the sun. As soon as I tapped the Mazatzal Divide Trail sign I turned and fled back downhill to the shade.

Thistle Spring #95 (Cornucopia :next: West Fork)
Tough climbs with well-earned views on top. Lost the trail on the second (shorter) climb and meandered around until I could pick it back up. This trail is definitely getting thick, probably because the AZT skips past it now, but being able to see (Little Saddle Mountain?) and Saddle Mountain to the south and Sheep / Peeley ridge to the north from one spot was pretty awesome. Fast drop back to West Fork where I found the tripod waiting - glad it didn't go War-of-the-Worlds or anything.

West Fork #260
Again? Same as last time, only hotter. Filtered some water at the bottom for a late lunch break.

25A to Cross F Trailhead
For a road walk / connector this was pretty nice. There is a well-defined trail connecting the West Fork / Cornucopia junction south to the end of the road, and then the road jumps in and out and back and forth across West Fork Sycamore Creek. A smell of diesel hung in the air but I didn't see or hear any vehicles along the way. Most of it was shaded and a breeze was starting to kick up and rustle the hot air. Connecting to N Beeline was annoying, as the old track is gated off as private, so I just jumped into the creek and hung out with some cattle before climbing back out north of the trailhead.

Sunflower #344
A quick water refill and shirt change and it was back up on Little Saddle Mountain to connect to Sunflower. LSM was pretty in the light, partly shaded and dancing along the edge of the creek. Turning onto Sunflower meant a quick drop and climb, going under some powerlines, and then miles of rocky two-track. Closer to Sunflower the path breaks off on its own and swings towards Diamond Mountain before going under N Beeline. But it's not done yet - another half mile of AZT, a quick crossing of the Sycamore, and then a dusty haul up to Bushnell before this trail is completed.

N Beeline to Cross F Trailhead
The tumble down from Bushnell parking back to Sycamore was graceless but got me back on N Beeline without playing frogger on AZ-87. Whole herd of deer was near the bottom of the bridge, unperturbed by the traffic overhead yet terrified of me. Paved roadwalk was about as fun as paved roadwalks can get. No traffic, as the sun was setting by now, and I returned to the trailhead before eight.

Mazatzal Miles: 129.8/275 (47%)

Asides
Hot. Drank 3 gallons of water (~half mixed w/ electrolytes) and 2 frozen powerades (for good luck). Forecast promised 85ish, thermometer claimed 95+.
Not a single person on the trails today. Well, there were some vehicles at Cross F when I stopped back in the afternoon, but didn't see any people on the trail. Only one driver was spotted from a distance. Quiet day in the Mazzies for such accessible trails.
Distance wasn't that big of a deal, though I need some better insoles to deal with the darn rocks.
Really need to start looking to the west/north. There's a lot of trails up there (Verde/Wet Bottom/Red Hills) that I haven't touched yet :(

This section of the Mazatzals we have passed through several times but had not done the section AZT since the realignment. The AZT used to follow Thicket Spring Trail #95 to Peeley TH but now follows the Cornucopia Trail #86. From Peeley we followed Thicket Spring over to McFarland Spring area. The trail is overgrown and need of clearing now that's it's not part of the AZT. Took a lunch break at McFarland which had plenty of water flowing in the creek. As has been the theme this spring there was water everywhere in just about every drainage we crossed.

Leaving McFarland we headed over to the realigned section of AZT on Cornucopia Trail and first time for us on this section. The realignment adds more mileage but there is less elevation and it follows the drainage which had plenty of water flowing with occasional cascades. Eventually the trail closes the loop and it was back to Peeley TH. We did have a surprise snow/sleet shower move through lasting only 5 minutes but cool to see.

This hike finishes up a section of the Arizona Trail #22 (Saddle Mountain). Previously hiked from Mormon Grove north but turned around because of confusion as to the route of the Arizona Trail. GPS said it took old Cornucopia Trail but the signs said differently. Upon arriving home I discovered the route had changed to a newly constructed trail. On this trip I decided to do both. The trails are well marked (except old Cornucopia trail) and maintained. Water was no issue for this time of year. not sure what it is like in late spring or fall. Not especially scenic for the most part but that side stream of west Sycamore Creek I consider one of the top ten scenic streams I've seen (Combination of fresh cool water flowing over rocks of slate).

This was only my second time to this area. I passed through the area in the spring during my thru hike of a chunk of the AZT. However, I did not take the nicely maintained Thicket Spring Trail and official route of the AZT, rather I completed the more rugged Cornucopia Trail. Despite not enjoying Cornucopia, I remembered liking the McFarland Spring area and since then I have been meaning to come back. Therefore, I was happy to find this hike idea and description. It was a perfect way to visit McFadden, hike the nicer Thicket Spring Trail and knock off a hike on the Mazzy's area hike list.

The AZT leg of this loop is in pretty good condition and I really liked the Thicket Spring portion. There was actually a moderate amount of water along this stretch and that did the dogs well. The last mile into the McFarland area was really nice as well, with a small dash of some fall colors, cool shade and solitude. After a quick break at the campsite near the dry McFarland Spring, we resumed the loop. That area is very nice and I think it would make a great overnight destination when it is cooler and there is more water in the area. The Cornucopia portion of the loop is pretty nasty, as it is being reclaimed by post fire growth and erosion and I don't think most will enjoy its ruggedness. Rather I think most would enjoy an out and back utilizing Thicket Spring Trail the entire way. This would make it just over a ten mile hike.

Tons of hunters in the area, along the roads and at the trailhead, but it did not impact me any. I talked to a few heading in, as I was finishing up, but other than that only ran into one other hiker along Cornucopia interestingly enough. Nice little loop, probably won't go out of my way to do Cornucopia for a third time, but the hike into McFarland from the trailhead is great.

Wanted to check out the new AZT alignment and the improvements to Cornucopia. Looks great! :app:

Thicket Spring now gets no AZT love ;) = complete thicket up to the saddle.

Hadn’t been on this part of trail since Sunflower yahoos torched the area - sad to see that the great manzanitas and manzanita tunnels are all gone :(

Didn’t see anyone until I met a couple of family groups playing in Sycamore creek about a mile from the end. Saw a gopher snake along 25A.

I really like this loop. Its challenging and extremely diverse in regards to scenery, type of trail, and quality of trail. Today was a perfect day for it and we managed to catch up with some of the folks meeting at the Peeley TH this morning. That trail builder machine they put to work in there is basically magic. The Cornucopia was totally transformed since the last time I was on it. The new signs are also impressive. We saw a bald eagle in McFarland Canyon and some coatimundi along Alder Creek :D

My only bad note is that due to the fire, the lower half of the old jeep road connecting the Sunflower Mine to the Saddle Mtn trail is being swallowed up. I think that road is a hidden gem of the Mazzies and would hate to see it forgotten and disappear.

I had a great time on this trip- there are so many good things to say about this. It was my first proper hike in the Mazatzals and I came away with a good appreciation for this area. Kyle put this loop together and it defiently showcases a spectrum of the wilderness along with varying degrees of trail types and conditions.

Starting off, we set a good pace on the saddle mountain trail which winds along the side of the mountains. The trail is open and wide. One one side of the trail the rugged mountains rise up and the other side the earth drops off into views of rolling hills and wilderness for miles. Not too shabby. Eventually the trail drops us down into McFarland Canyon. We stopped for a break in a nice little clearing and continued following the canyon upstream for a bit. Kyle and 9L spotted an Eagle along this portion. Eventually the trail leaves McFarland Canyon via a small side canyon. The trail narrows and goes uphill for this portion. The foliage along the trail was very dense and we had to pay attention to stay on the trail. Once we got to the high point the trail was very good and easy to follow for miles. We breezed onto the Mazatzal Divide trail and ran into the group of Haz'ers from the GPS Joe Tribute. Good timing to run into everyone :) 9L and Kyle chatted for a few minutes with Larry and others. Then we continued toward the Peely TH and they went the opposite way. We paused for a few minutes at Peely TH to relax and eat our lunch before hopping back on the Mazatzal Divide trail that would bring us to the juncture for our loop.

At the juncture we left the Mazatzal Divide trail and followed the Cornucopia Trail. These trails were both very wide and easy to follow. We stopped and saw the remains of what was once a blue delivery truck and not too long after we saw some very cute and scared coatimundi who ran away and would not let us stop to take pics of them. We had more beautiful views and fall colors through this portion of the hike as we walked through another dry creekbed. Eventually the trail becomes narrow and runs parallel to the creep bed while gradually rising. This put us back on another Jeep Road just above the sunflower mine. We ran into some friendly jeepers and a dude with a large gun going for a walk to check out the mines up from the road. We continue to follow the trail upwards towards a saddle. Decent trail through this part, but there was some deadfall to navigate past. Past the saddle we ended up getting off route and had to turn back a little bit. Just some challenging routefinding fun. The rest of the way back was a bit of a blur for me. The uphill was gradual but it seemed eternal until we finally connected back onto the Saddle Mountain Trail and back to the Jeep.

This was a great day in a beautiful wilderness.~ I anticipate many future hikes in the Mazzies :D

Loop hike with Kyle & Claire. We headed for the Peeley Trailhead and saw Hank and the rest of the HAZ crew who were remembering GPS Joe. We also saw FOTG and the dogs. We took our lunch and then returned to our trailhead passing the Sunflower Mine. Along the creek we saw a large pack of Coatimundi.

Parked at FR25 / 25A junction and hiked up FR25 to Mormon Grove TH, take Saddle Mtn trail to McFarland Canyon and continue on Thicket Spring trail to West Fork trail to Cornucopia trail and take that back to 25A and return to the 25/25A junction.

The area is recovering a bit from the Sunflower fire. The new posts installed by Shawn and team look good and will be even better when the signs are added  We saw an Arizona black buzzworm along Saddle Mtn trail.

The area seemed eerily quiet today. From the time we left the Beeline to getting back we saw no people and no vehicles anywhere in the area except on the drive back we saw one pickup. There are usually at least a few people/vehicles at all the camping spots along FR 25.

A few patches of snow and ice on the north side - don't think that will last long in this weather. On the way back did a side trip down Cornucopia to Thicket Spring. Driving 201 we noticed a new locked gate has been put across FR1701 (road to Pine Mtn mine) and saw a large water tank and stack of hay bales down there. :-k

This was a really long day and you probably won't find me following this route again. There were a few nice areas to check out-- some good fall color show in a few locations. I encountered a bit more bushwacking than expected. It was good to see a bit of trail in the Mazzies I had not yet been on. Also saw the mine at the Saddle Mtn / Thicket intersection that I had not be aware of. I took a side trip left where Little Saddle Mtn merges onto the old jeep road (instead of staying right) to check out Upper Sheep Creek Spring. Not much to see there. Its pretty ugly getting there and there's a corral. Not really worth going to again. The trail section that connects Thicket Springs and Cornucopia on the south end is a total mess-- not fun.

Starting point: Cross F TH
Little Saddle Mountain (plus side trip down the old jeep road to Upper Sheep Creek Spring)--> Saddle Mountain --> Thicket Springs --> Cornucopia--> 25A --> jeep road above Sunflower Mine --> Saddle Mountain -->Little Saddle Mountain

I think all the trail names are correct. The signs don't seem to correspond 100% with my map.
