Alright, advertised a lengthy Meetup hike and received a strong response. Capable and fun group. 10 of 11 met at TH. Great % 1st couple trails easy. Gets more interesting on Quartz.

We followed it to the end. A couple of us climbed up a bit higher. Then up to the quartz outcropping on the way out. Formed a loop part way through with Lost Dog & Old Jeep Trails. Eat on the way back and still home by 4.

It was 54°. Normally a good hiking temp, but it was so windy I wore a hoodie. 🥶

LDWT had a decent surface, and a steady stream of hikers. I was surprised, wasn't expecting that. Some nice saguaro.

The "overlook" is misnamed: Taliesin is too far away (1 mile). Nice vista though. I thought I could follow the contour closer, but side-sloping was such slow progress, that I turned around after 1/4 mile.

Old Jeep was broken & rocky, but more up & down. Not nearly as many nice saguaro.

Don't really remember much about Ringtail.

It was a nice day for a long hike, so I decided to do this one, which is a variation of a similar hike that I did last month.

This is a big CCW loop that starts and ends at the Adero Canyon TH. The loop goes through 3 different preserves and uses 17 different trails. The trails in the Fountain Hills Preserve are definitely the best ones on this hike!

There were a few people out on the trails in the Scottsdale Preserve, but I did not see anyone in the Fountain Hills Preserve or the Maricopa County Regional Park.

I decided to take advantage of a nice hiking day and do this long loop again.

Weather was near perfect for me: cool and cloudy.

There weren't very many people out on the trails today. I did not see anyone out in the Fountain Hills Preserve.

Trails are much nicer in the Fountain Hills Preserve than in the Scottsdale Preserve.

The majority of these trails within this lasso loop just aren't that aesthetic. Basically, hiking in washes between cookie-cutter houses and around a golf course below transmission lines.

Some days are better than others for me. On Sunday I felt listless. So a Monday Meetup for me. Met earlier than I'm used to, 8 am at the TH. Felt weak & uncertain early on.

Managed to hit my stride and decided to stay with my plan to go much further. So I said bon voyage from the overlook to push forward.
On parts of Quartz, expensive homes are right beside you. 😒 Beyond what is included in the original write up.

"Paradise" proved to have the same issue. Eventually you will get past them and views will open up. When I reached the loop and saw the people, I knew it was time to turn around. Another extension plus an added loop b4 calling it a day. Reset button achieved. 😌

PS I tracked this with my old phone & updated the date & time early in the hike. This caused RS to show it took me a week at .08 mph!

I have been doing a lot of short hikes lately so I decided to take advantage of a cold, cloudy day and do a longer, close-to-home today.

I started and ended at the Adero Canyon TH, and did a long CCW loop that went through 3 different preserves and utilized a number of different trails. The trails in these preserves are interconnected, and there are several different trailheads that you could start from and come up with some loop hikes that are as long or as short as you want.

This hike isn't all that exciting, but it worked well for what I wanted to do today.

There were very few people out on the trails today -- I guess that the masses stayed home instead of venturing out in the unseasonably cool weather. On the way back, I went 7-8 miles without seeing anyone on the trail.

At one point in mid-afternoon there were some snow flurries, which I enjoyed.

there were a few chuparosa blooming on the sections of the Quartz Trail that went through some washes, but that was it for wildflowers

Not too shabby of a route. :| However, going CCW, once cresting onto the Sunrise saddlepoint, all that could be heard from below is the sounds of destruction! The traverse north on Andrew - Kinsey stays dispiriting until past the Adero Canyon junction. The sound of jet engine rumbling is also ever-present when climbing west back towards Bell Pass. This almost constant annoyance of sonic booms isn't as bad on this hike as when one hikes Windgate Pass or the western sections of the Tom's Thumb Trail. Three of five stars if I was to rate this as a standalone guide.

For my first hike of the year, I decided to stay close to home and get a few miles in.

The weather was nice and cool for most of the hike, although the sun came out for a bit about half way through the hike which warmed things up a bit.

I didn't see anyone until I got up to Bell Pass, and then there were a few people out on the trail the closer that I got to the Gateway TH. Once past the Gateway Loop I mostly had the trail to myself again.

This isn't the most exciting hike in the world, but it was a nice day to be outside!

Posted this outing to meetup. Least response I have received b4 😐 1 person showed up so good enough. We scrambled up 136th St Spur & then followed a route I had previously mapped out.

We hiked to Taliesin Overlook & then took a different path back. Ate at a small healthy restraunt in Scottsdale on the way back.

It was a mostly cloudy day today, so I decided to stay close to home and do this hike to get some miles in.

I did another CCW loop starting and ending at the Adero Canyon TH in Fountain Hills. The desert looks really green right now, which will hopefully lead to a nice spring wildflower season in the coming weeks.

There is nothing remarkable about this hike, but it was a pleasant hike with not many people on the trails.

I wanted to get out and stretch my legs a bit today and decided to do this hike. It is not the most exciting hike in the world, but it is close to home and is a good workout.

There was some nice cloud cover for the first 6-7 miles, but then the sun came out. Thankfully later in the afternoon there was some shade on the east side of some hills.

There weren't many people out on the hike, so I mostly had the trails to myself.

A few chuparosa were blooming, but that was it for any flowers. There were some very healthy looking brittlebush and ocotillo, which generates optimism for a nice spring wildflower season!

got a late start this morning
couldn't decide what to do
had done a version of this hike nine years ago
lost dog to the overlook, then quartz with a side trip to the quartz outcropping
continued on quartz to where it dropped into a wash
i remember a good trail above the wash
there was a sign stating the trail is in the wash; wish i had taken a photo of it
anyway, the wash sucked, with deep gravel and bugs
didn't feel like a mile of that, so i turned around
took the long way back on the jeep trail, ringtail, anazasi spur and hit the nature trail to get double digits
this was not my favorite hike
the best thing from lost dog is sunrise peak
nice day, got ten miles in, good enough
estimating elevation gain since i can't get route cloud to work
will revise when it does

Any day on the trail is a good day. Having said that, I wish I had done this one on Monday when there was more cloud cover. Obligations must be attended, however, so it was noon Tuesday before I was free to hit the trail. Since today's obligation was super close to the Lost Dog TH (how convenient!), it was a no-brainer to visit MSP, my favorite hiking place in the valley.

Had the clouds been with me, I might've chosen Sunrise Peak instead but I could feel that sun pretty intensely before even setting out so I decided to go with something less AEG-y. While the scenery was its usual spectacularly Sonoran self, the trails on this route aren't among my faves in the MSP system. It was pleasantly quiet, though, with just a handful of hikers and no cyclists or equestrians. On the return leg, I opted for picking up the shorter Sunrise return to the TH in order to tend to a grumbly heel.

Met some friends out here for an early morning hike. Anyone know why 6:54 AM is the time the gate opens? Kinda weird if you ask me (nobody is asking. I know).

We stayed low and wandered up the Quartz Trail to the end. Enjoyed the company, but if I am going to drive out here, Sunrise from 136th St remains my favorite for the Southern McDowell's.

Trails were packed with well meaning people and extra wonderful pooches. Saw a dead javelina in Quartz Wash that is gonna stink by Monday.

I was wanting a workout out close to home so I decided to do this one from the Adero Canyon TH. I copied this hike from one that @hikerdw did recently. I followed his route with one exception: when I got to the end of the Promenade Trail I took the Lower Sonoran Trail, whereas @hikerdw took the Sonoran Trail. After about 2 miles the two trails converge at the boundary of the Fountain Hills Preserve and the Maricopa County Preserve. The Lower Sonoran Trail is the easier of the two.

I did a big CCW loop through 3 preserves: the Fountain Hills Preserve; the McDowell Mountain Maricopa County Preserve; and the Scottsdale Sonoran Preserve. I never saw anyone in the Fountain Hills or the McDowell Mountain Preserves, but I did see a few folks on the trails in the Scottsdale Preserve, but not too many.

This isn't the most exciting hike in the world, and there was a lot more sun that what I was hoping for -- 19 miles of full sun is a bit much for me. If I do this one again I will pick a cloudy day. The desert is a bit drab now, but hopefully we'll get some rain over the next few days.

It's been over 5 1/2 years since I've done the Peak and usually it was an after-work hike but not today. So how bad is this? I planned the hike so that I could be done by 4:45; in time to enjoy my beer before it got completely dark and then drive to the Thai House to pick up some Pad Thai. Such is the life of my retirement at the moment  .

Off I went and headed up the trail. I had forgotten how rough it is; I get spoiled with my Phoenix Preserve trail tread. I see they have rocked this trail too and added drainages. Seems strange to see all these new drainages in some of the city, county, regional parks I've been hiking. It is a rather long gradual entry up to where the climb actually begins. I encountered a few hikers along the way.

Once you actually start the climb, the trail tread, for the most part, is a lot nicer except for some rocky sections here and there. I more or less like the grade of this climb and I still remembered it. I plodded my way up to the first saddle and noticed the moon to the left of Sunrise Peak so I grabbed a couple pics along with a few more along the way as my foreground changed. I also took pictures of the distant views. It wasn't the best time of day to be taking pictures but I took them anyway. In fact, I ended up taking more pictures than I anticipated but I guess that's usually the case with me 😉 .

When I got to the second saddle I saw the new development below. Since 2015 one portion was finished and the beginnings of an even bigger subdivision has emerged. I also noticed that you can use one of the horseshoes from the railing to center Weavers Needle but it would take manual settings to get the shot. And now it was time for the climb up Sunrise. I think this is one of the easier short and sweet climbs there is of a peak. Just before I got to the top I saw a raven on a rock at the edge so I tried to get a few pictures of it preening and observing. This is when I wish I had my camera.

There were a few people at the top. I made my way over to the eastern edge and sat for a moment to get some photos and re-tie my shoes. I was amused by the Exit sign for the way down. Don't know that I've seen an exit sign on a peak before. On my way down I encountered a few hikers just like I did on the way up. And then it was down the hills I went enjoying the cool air and trying to make decent time so that I could do the full hike I had planned. Once again I encountered hikers and a few bike riders. That has to be a rough trail in spots to ride because of the rockiness.

I took my "stage right" onto the Ringtail Trail which I hadn't been on this side for many years. It has a few little hills and some nice desert landscaping. When I got to the intersection with the Old Jeep Trail and it said 1.8 miles (I think?) I figured I could still do it and be done in time for my 4:45 beer. This is a gradual grade hike up a very rocky road and then two dips with another small dip before you hike slightly downgrade until reaching the intersection with the Lost Dog. Once again there was more trail work here including rock and drainages. I encountered a few sets of hikers and bike riders along the way. I was surprised it was still another 1.8 to the TH as I was hoping it was only a mile. Nonetheless, it was 4:10 and if I could do a 20 min. mile💨 I could still meet my beerline, I mean deadline.

They've also done some work on the Lost Dog Trail including one big drainage area. And, of course, along here are some little cholla forests that are lit up by the sun. The shade of the mountains was pretty large now but they weren't quite covering all the cholla yet so I was able to get a few pictures. Once back in the shade of the mountains I put on my down vest that I had tied to my waist pack. I just don't like getting that chill at the end of a hike so I was glad I had lugged it along. There were more hikers now and a few bike riders as well so pretty consistent throughout the 9 miles.

And now, what time is it? Yep, "beer time". I try to park Tonto 3 in a position so as to enjoy the view while I have my beer and snack. And this time on the drive out, I pulled over to get a picture of the sunset that was also slightly reflected on the hood.

Oh, I almost forgot. This is the most total miles I've hiked in a year breaking my 578 mile record in 2014. How 'bout that! Who knew this hiking thing would catch on with me....

WATCH: 8.72 mi in 3:32:19 at 2.4 avg MPH, 134 avg BPM (1:11 in Zone 5 (max), 1:30 in Zone 4 (anaerobic), 48 in Zone 3) burning 1450 calories (yeah for Pad Thai then). Starting temp 66.1 at 16% humidity. Finished at beer time, 4:42.

Wanted to do a quick hike after work that might have some wildflowers. Was originally thinking Dixie Loop off the 17 but decided I hadn't been out in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve area for a while and it was closer; even though I dread the drive back to my house.

It was a lovely day. They've paved the first part to the Interpretive area but the rest of the trail is a typical trail; a very nice trail. As I headed up Lost Dog a couple told me there was a rattler ahead but I never did see it which I'm fine with. However, I have to say, I stayed in the middle of the trail for the most part, ha! The Brittlebush was ablaze in gold and very full. The chollas were also glowing via the back-lighting provided by the sun. And it is green out here. Going through the washes is where most of the color was with the yellow of the Brittlebush clashing with the red of the Chuparosa.

I came to the Old Jeep Trail where I headed east. You can see a good part of this trail ahead as it is still pretty wide. I encountered a couple people here but that was pretty much it until I got up to the Ringtail where I encountered a few more. The Old Jeep dips through a couple more washes and some of the trail in and out has some ruts. I stopped by the chuparosa I remembered as it's always a stand-out and this time the bees thot so too.

I should mention that for a lot of the way there were smatterings of lupine on both sides of the trail but not in the bunches that make for a good photograph so it was a struggle to try and document that. However, the Brittlebush and Chollas make up for that in spades. As you top out after the last dip you can see to the east side and Sunrise Peak. It all looks so incredibly green.

Ringtail is always a fun little bit of elevation as the flora mixes with the shale-like rock. Here again you top out to a nice 360 vista before doing a zig and zag as you head west and then south back to link up with Lost Dog. Once on Lost Dog you head east and start to encounter a few more people. I don't know if I'll get back here again before the end of spring but I would be curious to see if they get any more blooming flora.

I had to add the missing track and paste the other two tracks together as RS glitched after a couple miles or so. Hopefully when I get my new phone, that won't be an issue anymore. It's been working so well except these last few times. And the drive home was dreadfully slow, an extra 15 minutes.

Here are a couple videos (a little more narration than usual as I was hiking alone😉):

Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.

This is typical in-city hiking. Nothing special to write about. I will say that at least this goes up into a valley that is between two mountain ranges, so the city is not quite so much in your face. It appears to be a popular hiking area, lots of parking for cars. There were also quite a few people on the trails when we were there, we started at 7:10 and finished about 9:25.

Combined sections of 4 hikes to make a 5.5 mile Loop:
1. Lost Dog Wash Trail
2. Old Jeep Trail
3. Ringtail Trail
4. Sunrise Trial
