From the Taliesin West sculpture, the trail heads north, closely paralleling the road. To the right is a chainlink fence, berm and powerlines. The trail soon turns right across the canal, then immediately turn left, along the powerline road. And there are a lot of powerlines.

Several golf holes are down in the wash. At 1¼ miles, a green and Quartz Trail are on the right.

Just past the paved cart path four-way intersection, the trail does a quick left-right, down into the wash. If you look up, that small building is a restroom. It’s private property, but if you gotta go, you gotta go. The his & hers are single occupancy, clean, flush, running water, with hand cleanser. 🚻

At 1⅔ miles, to the right of the trail, is a cement spillway, studded with “dragon’s teeth” like it’s Omaha Beach. I wonder what the “dragon’s teeth” are for?

At 2 miles, the trail turns right, passing between two golf greens. (This is the other end of Quartz Trail, per signs.) Another restroom building is there. Don’t stray onto any of the several cart paths: Stay on dirt. Again singletrack, the trail hugs a wall for 150 yds., then turns northeast, along the bank of a shallow wash.

The trail remains in that small wash, lined by high-end homes, for the next two miles. I’d only seen one hiker earlier — ironically, the same one at both ends of Quartz Trail — but I saw occasional foot traffic between the golf course and Paradise Ln. After passing through that tunnel, the trail becomes traditional desert hiking.

Though never far from civilization, it is the most remote part of this segment. If you look back, there’s just enough elevation gain you can see most of the northeast Valley, including Scottsdale Airport, in whose flight path this segment lies.

I was going to stop for lunch at the Levee Trail intersection, but after unwrapping my chorizo breakfast burrito, decided instead to eat it on the fly. It paid off in pace (3.12 mph).

Once the rail joins Gateway Loop Trail at the 5-mile mark, it is all downhill to Gateway Trailhead. Tons of foot traffic too.

Four more segments to go!

Today’s Maricopa Trail segment was also 7½ miles, from Detroit Coney Grill to Taliesin West. Or, technically, the entrance. With no obvious trailhead for a pick up, instead of hiking this segment one way, I instead chose to ride it out & back.

Due to rain, I delayed leaving home for an hour. Got some sprinkles driving east. It was overcast & breezy when I finally hit the "trail" at 10:34 a.m. Head north to the first intersection, Indian Bend Rd. Cross both roads to get on the catty-corner. Picking up the multi-use trail, head north along the west side of Hayden Rd. You will be following the multi-use trail all the way to Taliesin West. Enjoy the three-lane symphony!

Lots of walkers were parka'd up, but I just wore my hiking shirt (for the pockets), figuring as is my lifelong habit that I would generate my warmth.

There’s plenty of waterfowl -- geese, ducks & coots -- along Marguerite Lake.

Between Via de Ventura and 92nd St., there are ten large flood control tunnels in three miles. None of them were flooded, or really had any water at all. I spotted no graffiti in the tunnels. Just white & tan splotches where the City of Scottsdale had quickly dealt with the situation.

I’d had to pee since we arrived at Detroit Coney Grill, so when I saw a sign ahead for Mountain View Park, I was relieved. So to speak.

Signs warn about water accumulation near the hospital, but there was only an inch when I rode through.

At Cactus Rd., the trail splits: I went left, then turned right, onto the bike lane along the south side of the road. If you instead split right, and under the road, then curl up & right, you will be following the multi-use trail along the north side of Cactus Rd. I thought Cactus Rd. would have less traffic, but despite several traffic circles, it was steady. Watch out: I saw one car pass in the turn lane, and a yard crew swerved into the bike lane just ahead of me. Take the multi-use trail instead. On my return trip, I rode the horse path that is also on the south side of the road.

Despite fighting 15 mph headwinds the whole way, I arrived at Taliesin West in only 55 minutes total time. On my return trip, with the slight downhill and no headwind, I rode three gears higher, and it somehow still took me 55 minutes moving time (i.e., not counting photo stops). I dunno. 🤷🏻‍♂️

We decided to start our ascent with the Desert Park Trail because when the gate opens in the morning, ~98% of the hikers simultaneously crush onto the Gateway Loop like greyhounds chasing a hare, which is definitely one of the silly aspects of MSP hiking (it is Snottsdale). : wink :
This hike is essentially the same as the Tom's Thumb Loop off Windgate Pass Trail, except that it omits The Lookout. It seems fatuous that they're almost duplicates. This was Dese's first time at the McDowell's highpoint and only my second. I may have one more highly illegal ascent planned, but that'll be a triplog for another day...

The majority of these trails within this lasso loop just aren't that aesthetic. Basically, hiking in washes between cookie-cutter houses and around a golf course below transmission lines.

Got Cathy checked in at Virginia Piper and decided to walk down the Maricopa Trail in the greenbelt to help pass the time.

The Jacaranda trees were putting on quite the show. I turned around at Marguerite Lake and persevered the double digit AEG on the return.

Only a 5 percent return on "good mornings". This Lululemon crowd is tough.

Not too shabby of a route. :| However, going CCW, once cresting onto the Sunrise saddlepoint, all that could be heard from below is the sounds of destruction! The traverse north on Andrew - Kinsey stays dispiriting until past the Adero Canyon junction. The sound of jet engine rumbling is also ever-present when climbing west back towards Bell Pass. This almost constant annoyance of sonic booms isn't as bad on this hike as when one hikes Windgate Pass or the western sections of the Tom's Thumb Trail. Three of five stars if I was to rate this as a standalone guide.

MT to the lake and back from Shea.

Saw two memorable sights...first, a small dog carrying a 4" dia. long log of Eucalyptus in his mouth. How his hind legs remained in contact with the ground shall remain a mystery.

Secondly, on the return I saw a brownish mound 25 yards off the trail that was moving in a weird way.
When I approached I saw it was about 30-40 cliff swallows collecting mud from a low area in the greenbelt. I could almost hear David Attenborough narrating the action. :)
I later saw them building their mud nests underneath the overpass of the 101.

MT to the lake and back from Shea. Less than 10% return on "hellos"...even worse on "good mornings". That's about par for this part of Scottsdale however. :(
I’m trying to pinpoint the turnaround. I think it was somewhere between the Personnel Department becoming Human Resources and the introduction of avocado toast.

Quite the scare this morning. Mrs. SloFolks 'stopped running' and I performed CPR for the first time in my life on a real person. It worked, and I got her to the hospital where she is now resting comfortably. I got on the Maricopa Trail near the hospital on Shea and went south to Marguerite Lake and back to clear my head. The gravity of what transpired hasn't sunk in yet.

I took Cathy down to the "big house" for an oil change and instead of the glum waiting room I hopped on the Maricopa Trail at Shea and went south to Marguerite Lake and returned. Lots of spandex and e-bikes. A dismal 10% return on 20 hellos. :(

First walk of any sort in many months. My 24/7 caregiver duties have kept me indoors as has the weather. Cathy had to have some work done today in preparation for her 100 day post transplant bone marrow biopsy. The results will hopefully be the harbinger of the happy ending we have been praying for.

I got on the Maricopa Trail near the hospital and followed it from Shea south to man made Marguerite Lake and back. Just cool and cloudy enough to even attempt this mid day. The sun came out briefly and what little breeze there was stopped and the sweating began in earnest. I'm pretty sure I was channeling Cannondale Kid. :-)

Hopped on the Maricopa Trail at Shea Blvd. near the hospital and followed it south to man made Marguerite Lake then returned. I stayed off the cement trail the entire way and ended up walking through freshly mown ankle deep Winter Rye, Clover, and Mallow.
The smell was very pleasant but my shoes are now green.
I should note (or warn) that this section of trail is the center of the universe for e-bikes and spandex.

Finished off the Gateway portion of the Maricopa Trail this morning. Two sections...Gateway Trailhead to Paradise Trail/Levee Trail junction, and Indian Bend Rd. to Royal Palm Rd. along the Indian Bend Wash. Started from Gateway TH at 7am, just before sunrise. The first mile was very nice, not as cool as previous mornings, very slight breeze. Trail led through saguaros and teddy bear chollas, slightly uphill most of the way. At the first mile, a 15-20 mph breeze picked up and cooled things slightly. Great views back toward Scottsdale and of Thompson Peak starting at about the 0.7 mark. Light to moderate traffic along the route. At about 1.2 miles is the junction to go to the Levee Trail. Walked to the Levee Trail where I'd left off previously and then back to the Gateway Trailhead at 8:30. A few quail and rabbits spotted but nothing exciting. :-)

(I didn't mention that I committed the cardinal sin of taking no water. I keep my H2O bottle with my pack, which I'd left behind in a senior moment this morning. Somehow I managed to bring a granola bar with me, though.)

Drove to Indian Bend/Hayden where I parked in the plaza on the SE corner as suggested by DarthStiller. (I'm always open to suggestions from those who are more knowledgeable.) Started at 9am sharp. The trail leads north along Hayden along the Indian Bend Wash trail/bike path until you get to McCormick Pkwy. Turn left and go a short distance until you reach the golf course, then follow the bike path along Lake Marguerite. Homes on one side, lake and several holes on the golf course on the other. Nothing terribly exciting in this stretch, other than walkers out for their morning exercise. It's 2 miles from Indian Bend/Hayden to the Butters restaurant at Hayden/Royal Palm. Return along the same route and finished at 10:20am.

Now I need to decide which section of the MT to attack. SE along the Mesa canal? Or something more interesting to the NE?

Continuing my adventure on the Maricopa Trail. Started 7:45am from McDowell Mountain Ranch Rec Center parking lot and hiked SW. Cool and clear, probably 43 degrees. I had located Javelina Trailhead on Google Maps but when I got to MMR the road led into a gated community. So I parked at the Rec Center and used that as my base. First part of this hike meandered gradually downhill through palo verde, bur sage and some saguaros in a wash-type setting with houses on either side. Eventually came to a golf course which I'm guessing is the McDowell Mt. Ranch course. Too bad I didn't bring a couple clubs along...I could've hit a few shots. :-) Failing that, I got a few photos of the course.

I followed the trail south along the power lines and the canal to where I'd left off previously (above Cactus/Frank Lloyd Wright). Some good views of the McDowell Mts. and back toward the city. Lightly trafficked, ran into occasional hikers/joggers.

Getting back to the parking lot, it was warm enough to shed my long pants and sweatshirt. I started the second half of the hike which led gradually uphill through the houses and saguaros, bur sage, creosote and occasional fishhook barrel cactus. Looking ahead I had good views of the McDowell Mts. I followed the Paradise Trail sign to the Levee Trail intersection, which provided a great view of Camelback. Squaw Pk. and Scottsdale. This part is less trafficked than the previous portion, which I enjoyed. I'll finish the section from Gateway Trailhead to the Levee Trail in the next couple days, along with the section from Royal Palm Rd. to Indian Bend Rd. That'll take care of the Gateway section of the MT.

I'm enjoyoing the MT so far. It'll have to do for my Camino for now. At least it gives me a goal!

I parked at the Quartz Trail parking lot off of 104th St and McDowell Mountain Parkway. Followed the sign over to the Quartz Trail and it took me down into the wash where it immediately meets with a designated portion of the MT. The last time I hiked the Quartz Trail was over 10 years ago, just after I had a major ankle sprain. I remember hiking it with @rdavisiii and my buddy Ted. We were all nursing various recent injuries, so it was kind of a rehab hike.

I headed south on the MT to where I left off last Monday heading northbound. After you get past the golf course, the trail follows a service road under the power lines, crosses the CAP canal, and heads east on Cactus Road. There's one little single track segment from the canal crossing to Cactus Road that parallels FLW Blvd, just above the road. Then it crosses right past the entrance of Taliesin West. I should go see that place one day I guess, since I went to Fallingwater 5 years ago in PA.

The trail follows the south side of Cactus Road until it follows the cement bike path, then you cross over to the north side and walk under the culvert and onto the bike path again. That's what the markers seem to indicate. Someone was doing work on some electrical conduits under there, so it was taped off from either direction.

Cactus Road is kind of interesting. There's an actual dirt path along there which is nicer than walking along a sidewalk that's designated as the MT for a few miles. The trees there give some shade, and for a major artery road, there really isn't much traffic. Interesting mix of the homes there, between newer modern looking places, and older, slump block single levels. One newer looking house was for sale and hadn't been occupied for some time by the looks of it.

Finished up just after 10am before any heat really started to kick in. The clouds early on kept it pretty cool.

Did another quick segment of the Maricopa Trail going through Scottsdale. I started from the plaza I was at last week when I hiked across the Salt River Rez, but this time headed northbound. The parks and green belt area are very landscaped. Not bad scenery at all considering it's urban hiking. Morning light helped with shade and cooler temps. I decided to do this on a Monday so there wouldn't be as many people around. It wasn't too bad. Busier on my way back, but not crazy crowded. I would think on a weekend it's worse. I turned around where the bike path is all concrete and seems to be away from a lot of buildings. Made this a hike a bit shorter than the rest of the segments I've been doing and finished just after 9:30am.
