1st trip
john and i decided friday afternoon to do the up and back as a backpack/dayhike combo
got going around 0600 saturday morning on the access route to the azt
this was longer than we realized, having done little or no research ahead of time
relied totally on guthooks this trip, allowing me to leave my battery charger at home
usually follow on route scout, but it was actually kind of nice to not be conscious of each mile
the initial miles are not too exciting, but the trails were all in good condition and the scenery improved the further north we went
took a break along a creek a few miles in
nice riparian area and plenty of places to filter
up and around saddle mountain, which featured a nice level contour and easy hiking
some ups and down before dropping into mcfarland canyon around noon, where we set up camp and took a decent break
even had a cup of john's coffee
set out on the 9.4 mile dayhike portion
went along another lush area with plenty of good water where we filtered a liter
a final ascent to the passage end at the mazatzal divide trail
headed back and ran into three thru-hikers on the way to camp
nice to see what others are doing, what kind of gear they have and where they are from
had plenty of daylight this trip to have dinner and relax
we both wanted a chair and a book, but didn't want to carry the weight on a high elevation trip
up at first light, got going around 0645
uneventful trip back, but good scenery and we passed a few more day hikers, one thru-hiker, and one bikepacker
chatted with a thru-hiker at the trailhead who relayed the challenge of passages 19-20
finished up before noon and were home an hour later
i really enjoyed this passage, especially getting on some new trails in the mazzies
good weather and great company, thanks lp!
a few little gear tweaks, as i always can use practice backpacking
our choices get more difficult logistically, and this was probably the last passage we will do as an out and back

1st trip
john and i wanted to get this one done before it got too warm
@juanjaimeiii generously shuttled us to rogers trough saturday morning - thank you!
he also hiked in three miles with us before turning back
got going around 0745 with temps already warm enough for t-shirts
down rogers canyon, up reavis ranch trail
took a quick break at the saddle, then down to the ranch
quite a bit of burn in this area, but better once near reavis ranch
stopped where reavis creek crossed reavis gap trail, then up the first big hill
filtered water at pine creek, where we talked to two thru-hikers and their two section buddy
we would cross paths with them a few more times
originally planned to camp at high point, so we loaded up with water
two bar has some wonderful views, but also two big uphills
we passed the thru-hikers, as the buddy was struggling with the temps
the last climb was a challenge for me; think i just needed some fuel - felt fine after a lara bar
lower on water than we wanted, too early to stop, windy conditions and just one exposed campsite had us reconsider the original plan
we decided to press on to cottonwood spring, and rolled in right at dusk
filtered water, found a decent campsite, set up and ate dinner in the dark
the thru-hikers camped nearby, arriving about an hour after we did
overnight temps were warm
up around six, we took our time since janie wasn't going to pick us up until 1400
got going around 0800 after a third cup of john's coffee and set out down cottonwood trail
flowing water, very lush corridor with saguaros on the hillsides above, pretty area
lots of good water sources, both in the creek and in several stock tanks
road walk for awhile, then on the thompson trail
some ups and down while going around several drainages, finally finishing at the bridge
we were able to get janie a text to pick us up earlier, and had time for a dip in roosevelt lake before she arrived
big first day and an easier second, which is how we often do these passages
solid hike with several new trails for me, once on two bar ridge
nice variety of terrain
new tent and quilt on this trip
pack weight was 14-18 pounds, depending on how much water
brought the right amount of clothes and food
need a couple little gear tweaks and better organization
always good to hike these passages with john
thank you for arranging the shuttles

met angela at apache wash trailhead at 0800
the mission was to find a couple of owls along the esplanade trail
apache wash, esplanade, cliff walk and badger brawl trails made for a nice loop
not much elevation gain, but a good chance for us to catch up while walking through open desert terrain
missed the one owl, even after doing some backtracking, but got close up views of another one 8)
hadn't been up this way in a few years
next time we'll hit the high points
thank you angela for the snacks and drinks - root beer always tastes good after a hike :)
great to hike with you again, think black mountain was our last one
a good plan B
