4 years ago I stumbled upon this TH while showing the area to someone else. I knew I needed to return that this would be a natural hiking spot for me. Welp, took longer than I expected to hike here.

I had proposed a spot in the Estrellas, my friend suggested this TH and for me to create a route. Hung around on HAZ some and found many options. Went with this one since neither of us had hiked here and were unsure of the terrain.

catclaw and RF didn't prove to be much of a factor. That said, long pants still advised. We took our time yet finished the route in under 7 hours. Hung at the peak for a while to take it all in. Keep in mind, you'll need to add 6.5 miles to all of the HAZ pages from here.

Consistently difficult to get peeps out to this spot. I'm still a fan. With many options, views and challenge. Tortuga was the only trail I hadn't followed out. Ends at a fence where more building is immenint.

Then up Javalina Peak which felt easier than it did 2 years ago. Wasn't going to reach stated numbers so added on Crest Summit. Next took loop around instead of same path back. Finally over bridge to opposite side of parking lot.

Posted a Meetup for a potentially rainy day. Sign ups were slow till the forecast became favorable. Hit the 10 max out. Half actually showed. Nothing shocking there. 🤷‍♂️

Hike got off to a very rocky start as two participants started screaming at each other. SMH So we took National Trail-Bajada-Alta. Alta is where it gets steeper with switchbacks.

We then took a social trail to a side viewpoint. Next was the peak. Nice lil bonus challenge. After that, it was mostly chill. A couple of those who came out were complaining it was a bit hot. This was my return to PHX.

A friend said it's absurd that I'm a PHX native & don't know the canyon 1st hand. Phantom Ranch reopened one week ago. This coming weekend its going to snow up there. The time to go is now!

4 of us got up there Friday night. A series of negative factors kept me awake virtually all night. Great way to enter the longest hike of my life. 🤷‍♂️ Start getting ready 4:30 am, in car at 6 and on shuttle at 6:30.

Wow, my 1st glimpse at the canyon. Take pics before starting. Scurry on down before chilling at Tipoff. Run into the other member from our group. He has already made it to Phantom and back!!

When we make it to Phantom, we hang for an hour. We've gone from cold in the pines to the desert floor. Climb back up to Tipoff is challenging and required multiple breaks. Tonto an easy connector + treated us to some Fall colors.

Hang at Havasupai Gardens for another 40 mins. My 1st time here, no rush. What's all the babbling about? This isn't difficult. Oh, that final climb out. 😮‍💨 Switchbacks, steps and double your AEG within the last few miles.

Dark outside and exhausted by the end. Barely catch the the final shuttle out. I'd do it all again. The Ridgeline is still more extreme. Will always remember this day.

One drops out morning of, meet other in Tempe. Both of us were a bit late for the 6:45 time. 🤓 Finding the TH wasn't difficult. The drive in is pretty and not as far as some.

Started hike before 9. RF is a definite factor in the beginning. Then the way forward becomes clear. Talked with some scouters early on. No overly difficult sections. Continuous but doable gain throughout.

After a couple tries, found the correct towers which is the the HP. Paused momentarily for friend early on the way down and spoke with the only other hiker we would see out here. Ended up descending with him. Many other options in this area. Will return. Although I will admit the Fall colors weren't quite what I was hoping.

Have gone up Old Baldy twice previously. Have also taken Baldy trail and then to Ian. Went diff this time. Super Trail to peak. This allows for new sights, enhanced views and a steadier gain.

Neither of the others had been here before so they voted to take Baldy back. Makes sense, ok. Also enabled us to finish the hike at 5 pm. Ahh, switchbacks easier on way down. 😊

So, Old Baldy=11 miles, loop is 14 and Super as an out n back would be closer to 17. Did this in t-shirt and shorts but realize not all would agree this time of year. Direct sun on summit so not at all cold. ❤️ this area.

Ahh, had been on immediate to do list for many years. Longer than any others. Slim season and finding others willing has gotten in the way. Met in Scottsdale at 7:30. These drives are getting shorter.

Pass marked TH for lil pull out a bit further N. Near hwy early in the hike. Then starts getting steeper and away from road noise. Had considered driving up to do in rev. Nope, my 4X4 would never have made it. So what is this Tacoma doing out here?? Oh, he's already damaged it. We warned him further repairs coming if he continues.

Only saw one other pair of hikers who were training for the canyon. Judging by all the beer cans at the TH, apparently hiking is not at the top of the list here. Felt a bit easier than the stats would indicate. Temps were perf. 😌

Welp, week 2 of major plans fell apart quickly. The massive storm system from Mexico doused our road trip idea. Especially since there were multiple water crossings. 😒 Upon studying, I found my one opportunity. Hit PHX trails after work on Sunday. Storms in the am then clear but keep temps down.

Started POURING on the way to work. Well, we'll see... Started hiking at 1 pm. Looked at my route from this TH bout 3.5 years ago and made sure to switch it up. Formed two small loops and went up 2 mini peaks.

Everything came together, numbers, time frame, not a drop of rain but kept many people away. ☺️ Will return another time in the future and alter the route again. 🙂

A friend and I have been planning an aggressive Fall agenda for months. A challenging route in a diff section of the state each weekend into Nov. This outing had been on my want list for 3 years. Saw a TL recently with a route that encouraged me. Let the games begin!

Easy drive to the outskirts of Prescott Valley. Pavement ends a lil before the TH. Soon realized this is littered with many discarded used condoms. WTH?!

Trails not well marked. Got off track a couple times despite two of us having it mapped out. Yet there's a random "keep dogs on leash" sign?? Steep and rocky in places. Lots of sun exposure.

Bail from the trail for a 1/2 mile to bag peak. This does involve some scrambling and there is a false summit. Chilled at the HP with the breeze. 😊 Made up our own route down a diff route. Continued the loop. Didn't see a single other person. See potential out here. 😉

Gregory Canyon TH is small. I parked in the street on a Monday. If going on a weekend then you'd be better served going to the Chautaugua TH. This will add another mile to the hike and a couple hundred ft to the AEG.

Starting with the Amphitheatre Trail, this is the most direct route at about 2.2 miles. However, most of the gain is in that section. Turned dark, windy and a bit chilly at the peak.

Tried not to waste time heading down Ranger Trail knowing a storm was brewing. This route is less extreme for an easier descent. Saw a trio of deer the majority of the way back. That closes our the 3 tallest peaks in the Boulder area. 🤗

Went to Estes Park which was crazy crowded and parking difficult. Hung out some before breaking off to hike. Went back to car and decided last second to walk to TH instead of dealing with traffic and parking again. Oops

Guessing bout 3/4 of a mile away. Ended up being 2 miles. 😶‍🌫️ Finally reached TH to see RMNP pass required. Well, guess car would've been risky after all. Beautiful loop with fall colors.

Had to skip the out n back to the lake so I wasn't gone for an exceeding time period. The way back was downhill so easier. I also cut through to another trail to get away from the road. Ended up with same distance as planned but 1/2 the AEG.

Finally made it to CO! Let's start this off with a bang. Day 2, hike 1. Easy drive, tough climb. Only had AT to go by. SMH Won't be the case for others now. 😉

Starts off moderate. Turns difficult. Grows rocky & steep. Then climb through a boulder field. Ah, this is the scrambling they were talking bout. Turns overgrown and then hop on clearer trail. L at jct to go for peak.

Way back reach boulder field. Wait a second, there is a bail out trail! WTH was all that scramble talk on AT then?! Figures. Making much better time on the way back. Decided to form a small loop which only added a bit to AEG and bout .25 mile.

Yes you can make this easier than my route. Most surely will. May be a select few who will chose the wicked route. Adventures to continue...

Planned to post summit via Smith Ravine but decided to make it more interesting. Participation suffered but a more enjoyable adventure. Another great write up from @mewhiteman

The three of us kept a strong pace through the steep and rocky trail. The road is more compelling than most. You get your first glimpses of the peak. Gets steeper as you near tower. Great views and one of the only spots we saw others.

Made lots of upcoming plans today for the coming weeks. Before that, I now will be exploring another state. Also debating 7 summit challenge. Nonstop now!

Aug. saw a record number of outings, AEG and mileage for me. Going to a wedding today and didn't want to let this streak die so a rare Friday outing. Got three others to show up for this 1.

This route was originally planned to hit Marshall Peak but under the threat of rain, we decided against that portion. At the jct we took Mint Springs which was prettier than I remembered. Next came the primitive dirt roads. Relentless climb but I was a fan of the route.

Was relieved to chill out at the towers. Finally saw other people again. Thunder was booming up there. Switchbacks down steep decline with fabulous views. Then out the way we came. Driving down Mt Lemmon, the rain started pouring.

Had been planning this one for a lil bit now. Forecast and timing were finally on point. It's a trek to this TH. Bear Jaw a bit longer and tougher than I had remembered. We caught sight of the peaks the majority of the way through the trail. Ahh hell no, I'm already tired. 🥴

Chilled at the jct before beginning the steep off trail slog. Plenty of downed trees to navigate. Then traverse through a boulder field. As we approached the summit, it felt like my lungs had been handcuffed. Half breaths through a difficult section causes for many mini breaks. 1 yelled down, it's right up here. We know, this is the best we can do. 😮‍💨

Truly unique views of the San Franciscos from up here. Created a new registry. Why are these things disappearing?! The descent was far easier and RF wasn't bad. Judge by EG, not mph, or stats will look depressing. 🫵

Reach TH @ 7 am. A minor miracle for me. 😛 Up East which wasn't as difficult as I remembered from 9-8-2019. Chill at boundary with guy doing loop rev of us. Going down W was mostly easy. Terrain does limit how fast one can move most of the way.

Chill at water next to Crossover Trail. After already hiking 13 miles, that first mile was brutal. Next couple were much easier. Finished an hour and a half sooner than expected. Same time it took me to do E to boundary and back 6 years ago. 😊

Was going to take this week off. A friend talked me into coming out. Came up with a plan but completely missed the turn. Eyed a turnoff to get back there but saw it wasn't much of a road. Oh, we can start a separate hike from here. Game on.

Yes Copper Trail is steep with little shade. Didn't plan on this so was dressed in all black. 🫤 Breeze did help. Then went up to Mt Francis. Took two different shortcuts. Then added a quick off trail peak.

Knock out an outing with decent numbers + a rd trip. Heading home early this time. Can still get out tonight. 🥊

Now this is an adventure. Start from over 9100 ft with amazing views. Drop down a steep, rocky trail. Then turn right on Sutherland with more uphill. Turn right at the next jct onto Canada Del Oro. Stay left onto the Short Cut Trail which isn't mapped on here.

Your have now dropped back down to 7200 ft. Turn L on the steep & no longer maintained Samaniego Ridge Trail. Watch for ribbons and cairns or you'll quickly be off trail. Here is where our time begun to slow down immensely.

Finally ups and downs on Canada Del Oro again to 8k. At this point we turned onto what once was a trail. Our mph is now miniscule. Downed trees, occasional trail and major RF. After a mile we realized we best turn around at 7400 ft. 💧
