Cool start, but the sunshine felt great, did a little more exploring.

Earlier this week we started out from the Willow Canyon Trailhead at milepost 204 on highway 88. Heading north to the wash we turned left and picked up the Little Chance Canyon Loop for approximately 2 miles. This a beautiful stretch of trail with lots of golden volcanic tuff formations.
Look for the lovely section of eroded tuff shown in the picture with text attached, at which point you keep to the left and go up the wash until you find another trail. This trail follows a wash for a while and opens on to clearing where you turn right and head up towards the saddle as shown in another picture with text.
The trail up to the saddle is very well maintained and at the saddle you have a lovely view of the valley and golden dome in the distance. Go down the small ravine at the left of saddle and follow this trail until you reach the jeep trail in the Cottonwood Wash. Turn left into the wash and follow it for about 0.6 of a mile where you go up out of the wash to right and pick up the Horse with No Name trail that winds up the side of the mountain. The trail is a bit rocky here but well-marked and leads some beautiful tuff formations near the top. The overlook is fantastic! I have a attached a pano showing the lovely view from 4 Peaks on the left over to Flat Iron in the Superstition Mountains on the right.
The walk down the back side of mountain is very picturesque. Much of the trail crosses the tuff making for comfortable walking on the descent. We stopped for lunch in the shade near the wash where some old buckets were set up for sitting comfort. If you have some extra time cross the wash to the north and pick up a short loop that provides some great views of Golden Dome.
There is a fantastic stand of saguaros along the loop leading back east. The trail is crossed by several washes so you need to keep an eye for cairns to keep on the trails and avoid the rocky steps in the main wash. When you reach the Cottonwood Wash turn to the right and follow the wash south until you reach for the turn off leading back up the saddle you came in on.
We were pretty tired by the time we completed this lasso loop but it was well worth.

Hike w/ kiddos. Sprinkled on and off throughout the route, never enough to worry about rain gear, not when there were all the awesome puddles to splash through. Great flow along the smaller washes, Willow Creek itself had signs of flash but only sporadic puddles, the valley had decent trickles between rock pools. Saw one other hiker w/ dog and, when exiting around 9am, there were a small group w/ cool-looking jeeps getting ready to drive out - overall a quiet and fun way to spend the morning.

Did the rugged lasso route posted by @chumley on 1-12-2019, went clockwise. Pedestal Arch is a cool place and Golden Dome is a very impressive piece of rock, summited / back down via the east end prow - one committing 4th class move on mostly solid rock. Then some very fun canyoneering on the way back after Peak 3141. Lots of isolated pools with clear water in many of the drainages but nothing flowing.

Pre-turkey stroll with kids. Saw only one other car in parking lot, there were two groups within Willow Springs Canyon on the way out, overall very quiet and peaceful. Only water seen was at Willow Spring. Kids enjoyed the cool temps and had a bit too much fun rock climbing whenever possible, and I kept busy plucking them off of ledges when things got too steep.

Several wet spots within the creek, few deep pools that were surprisingly not-skunky-looking.

Hike w/ kiddos. Met grandparents in the lot for a socially-distant outing, only two other vehicles in lot at 6am. Same route as last time, did loop clockwise, lot drier compared to last March, still pretty. Few cool spots in the canyon in between the sweat-fests. One rattler in Last Chance that had my 7yo screaming like a stuck hyena. Played a little bit in the caves by Willow Spring. A nice way to spend a morning.

Headed back out for an easy loop in the Goldfields with sister and a few additional kiddos. Assumed that the waterflow would be impressive after this week, but it was actually less than my previous visit a few weeks ago, when we did this (plus a few other GF trails) after a night/morning of rain. Water runs quick. Anyways, trails were still pretty and we made our way through the 'mouse trap' to see Willow Springs proper, which turned out to be a real gem and worth the soaking we all got on the way in.

Hike w kids. Started down the Jeep Road and jumped on Javelina Crossover / Gold Eagle Nuggets. This trail was a ton of fun, especially with the frequent water obstacles. Found a creative side trek to Little Chance Canyon that ended in a long butt-slide for all three kids over soaked rocks. The rest of the canyon, and the trail to Willow Spring Basin, began to wear on the gang, the roller coaster sucking the energy right out of the 3yo. Once the trail decided to trend down towards to the Basin Tank, which was overflowing, they cheered up. Had lunch in the canyon and began the long trek back, interrupted four or five times with ORVs. Tried to stick to the creek through the spring area, the water and climb was a bit too much to handle with them, so we took another way back to FR12 and followed it the rest of the way. No significant carries needed for any of them, just some light encouragement and sugary bribes.

Another nice hike for Tom and Teressa and Brooks before they go back to the cold country MN and IA. Been thru Willow Creek Canyon many times, but after we got thru I looked back and something was not the same, the heavy rains carried some huge rocks away from where I remembered ( WOW ) what force of nature.

Another foray into the delightful Goldfields. I'm starting to recognize some of the places I've been before. Hiking off trail was looser and brushier than usual for this area. Got a little scratched up, but nothing worth wearing pants for.

Flowers are still looking good. The geology here is relentlessly interesting and great for hiking.

A 29 year old joined us, and a 79 year old left us. Always a pleasure to hike with Ray and Kelly. Rhonda joined us for lunch and reminded us how compassionate Ray is. Though the other half of the story is much more interesting.

Good times. Thanks you two. :)

this hike was an attempt to summit golden dome, following routes posted by @chumley and @dixieflyer
two peaks, two arches and a trip down black glass canyon are featured
got an early start and enjoyed the trails to wishbone junction
(i just learned exactly where this is, according to tenny's gps coordinates)
a bit in the wash, then the off trail began
pretty good bushwhack uphill on loose rock, not terrible but time-consuming
vegetation seems a little more overgrown than usual this spring
finally made it to pedestal arch
there is definitely an easier way to get to this point
ray wasn't feeling the peaks, and he wanted to cut the route and meet us near black glass canyon
i wasn't comfortable at all with us splitting up, so we descended from there
upon further review, it might have been nice to cut over to black glass canyon
looks like there is a [ gps route ] for that option
after dropping back down we still had to get back to our trail, so we got to experience an off trail "shortcut" :)
nice day, good company, always fun to be out in the goldfields
i'm gradually learning some of the trail names and landmarks
ray treated us to lunch at the gecko grill in gilbert - thank you!
i had the grilled gecko
enjoyed meeting rhonda
we'll try again with a different route to pedestal arch, but maybe not this spring
golden dome will still be there
another thought is to take black glass canyon up to 3141, over to golden dome and return the same way
no need to see pedestal arch a third time
kudos to those who completed this loop; it's a good one
nice to be out with ray and john again

I'm going to piggy back off of Kelly's triplog, which sums up our day very nicely. Thank you Kelly and John, again, for your patience and understanding. One of these days we'll get it right.

Despite not achieving our objective, it's always a great day when you're hiking in the Goldfields. I came back whooped and scratched, but those are minor inconveniences compared to great company and wonderful scenery.

1st trip
On my last day out hiking before heading back to Tucson I decided to head back to the Goldfield Mountains. This hike would be an exploratory hike, "Fly by the seat of the pants", "go which ever way the wind blows". In spite of researching names of trails I could not find much, HAZ had a lot of different routes with names but some were trails some were routes. There were no definite boundaries to the trail starts and ends. So this hike I would walk a few of the routes posted and see what happens. I also plotted a few routes from google earth that look like trails.

Started at the Willow Springs Canyon Trail Head and hiked up Willow Springs Canyon. This trail/4WD road is labeled as 12 which leads to at least Bagley Tank. I Took 12 (two track) to about half way to Bagley Tank and the wind blew in a different direction and I headed back to Willow Spring Canyon. There were some rock tanks along the creek to Bagley Tank that still had pools of water in them, otherwise the creek was dry. I followed Willow Spring Canyon up to where Willow Spring Basin Tank is. There is a 4WD road leaving the wash heading to the tank. Willow Spring Basin Tank was filled to the brim. From the tank I headed south along a trail I spotted on Google earth. Turns out this trail is what is called the Golden Eye Mine Trail. Really nice horse trail. This trail terminates along what appears to be the Quartz Crystal Canyon Trail near the junction with the Gold Eagles Nugget Trail.

Returned via the Gold Eagles Nugget Trail that I was on the night before. Wasn't long before the wind changed direction again and I took a trail that splits off to the north from Gold Eagles Nugget Trail. I spotted this trail on Google earth and it heads back to Willow Spring Basin Tank. This is another good trail and stays to the east of Golden Eye Mine Trail on the ridge west of Willow Spring Canyon. On HAZ a portion of this trail is listed under Little Chance Canyon loop. If I were naming trails I would call this the Willow Spring Basin Tank Trail that connects the Gold Eagles Nugget Trail to Willow Spring Basin Tank. I hiked this half way to where it drops down close to Willow Spring Wash and took that back to the Willow Spring Canyon Trail Head. Will have to finish this up on another hike.

Nice hike for a day after a long hike. Fairly easy walking with great scenery. It's nice sometimes to hike without a destination, just walk until you get tired. I have come up with some names for these trails that I was on that set well in my mind.

WILLOW SPRING CANYON TRAIL: Follows up Willow Spring Canyon
GOLDEN EYE MINE TRAIL: Willow Spring Basin Tank to Quartz Crystal Canyon Trail
GOLD EAGLES NUGGET TRAIL: Willow Spring Canyon Trail to Quartz Crystal Canyon Trail
WILLOW SPRING BASIN TANK TRAIL: From Gold Eagles Nugget Trail to Willow Springs Basin Tank
BAGLEY TANK TRAIL: 4WD route from Willow Spring Canyon to Bagley Tank

I wanted a few more miles on the day, and to play in the Goldfields.
I had 2 options drawn up for a 2.8 or 4.8 mile loop hike.

At the decision point, the group voted 2 to 1 for the short option.
As it ends up we missed a turn and opted to continue until we could find a shortcut for the loop.
The 2.8 or 4.8 miler turned into a 5 miler. :y:
All was good, they were easy miles with some good sights.

Bruce opted for three low key loops.

1) Hackberry Spring Loop
You can polish off this little gem in several ways. Appears some are adamant in declaring a portion as official Hackberry Spring Trail. Signage is nice. Not convinced it's official. No trail number, pressed/treated 4x4 posts, two signs on each posts, no mention on the FS site.

We explored a couple extra areas... babbling not paying attention.

2) Prospectors Trail #57
B and I have needed this trail to finish off the [ Area Leaderboard: Superstition Wilderness Trails ]
Worked it into a Praying Hands Loop from Crosscut TH.

Expected it to be the least desirable. Think it easily tops Lost Goldmine Trail #60. There are no bad trails in the Supes, some just seriously rock.

My first hike around the Praying Hands. As expected, tourist city. Unanticipated... wow, been missing out.

3) Baby Willow Loop
High yield adventure to mileage.

1st trip
Patrick has this itch to backpack the length of the Goldfields and has been doing recon hikes to make sure it can be done. One place he wasn't sure about was near Golden Dome. So his plan was to make a day trip out of it, bagging the dome along the way.

It was over 3 hours and 5.5 miles before I was informed that he had no idea whether or not Golden Dome was actually able to be climbed. ](*,) I got a signal on a high point and did a quick search on some summity peaky websites and came up empty. Oh well. We studied the terrain, looked for the best options, and headed to the west saddle to check out the north side of the dome since it was abundantly clear that the south slopes would not provide a route up.

From the saddle the easiest climb leads to a solitary saguaro, but I knew from the recon view that getting up from there wouldn't work. Just left of the saguaro chute was a parallel chute with a little brush that looked reasonably well protected. Or we considered looping the peak to the east nose to see what we would find there. I opted to head up the chute while the others decided to see how I did.

With a couple of tricky moves I was able to get up a couple of layers and learned shortly thereafter that I would be able to make the summit from this way. I yelled to the others and Justin and Patrick headed up behind me. The others decided to swing around and check the east side.

Once on the summit I headed east to see if there was a route, and was happy to find an easy scramble with a single 8-foot pitch with some good holds. It was a little exposed but I decided that I would go down this way rather than the way I had gone up. The others came around and climbed up this way. On the downclimb, I went down first and then spotted the others as there were a couple of footholds that couldn't be seen from above.

Having done both, I think I would stick to the chute we ascended rather than the climb on the eastern nose next time. Though both are certainly doable.

From there we headed over to peak 3141 before dropping down into a beautiful canyon that headed back to Willow and the quick hike back to the truck.

For such a distinctive, good-looking peak, I was surprised not to see a HAZ ascent posted, though I believe that @CannondaleKid was here back in 2013.

Limited on time so planned a hike to check out a faint horse trail I saw traces of from a satellite scan I was doing, and added in an accent to Hill 2609. Picked up the trail fairly easy and off we went. Cool and breezy at the start but the temps warmed up quickly. A little rocky and loose in some sections but overall the horse trail was very easy to follow and a much better option than hiking the wash jeep trail. The accent up to Hill 2609 was easier than expected and went fairly quickly considering all off trail. Hiked a little further along the ridgeline till we found a nice spot for lunch. On the decent we opted for another route down which was OK however the accent route was much better and will use it for future hikes. Once we hit FR12 we picked up another horse trail and finished with a loop back to the trailhead. Great hike exploring new to us areas.

Merlin and I decided to try something a little different. And I guess this was it. 3/4 of this was fairly nice but the rest was so full of grasses and such that filled the socks with prickers making the hike not very enjoyable. I guess the first quarter, to the Golden Eagle Nugget trail is about all I'd recommend. Being such a short hike we then headed over to the Needle Double Vista to continue on.

Took a little stroll through this area to enjoy the weather and find some geocaches. Got off the trail a bit toward the end and had an "Oh Crap" moment trying to climb some rocks when my foot slipped off a rock and I slipped and smacked my chin. Other than that, it was a pleasant little walk in the Goldfields.

Not exactly dripping. Scummy green water, but it could be filtered if one was in need.
