I planned a longer loop and then spotted a connecting trail that I didn't remember doing before and did a shorter loop. Once I got back near the trailhead, I spotted a trail that parallels 88 over towards Tomahawk Mine and hiked down there and back for a few more miles. It felt pretty warm at first like it might get hot, but then hiking down into the wash provided some shade and there were some clouds early on that kept the temps cooler than usual for late August. Didn't see anyone at all on the trails the entire time and no wildlife.

I had planned to kayak the Salt, but my wife decided pickleball was more important :? So, I reluctantly decided to hit up a section of the Goldfields that I hadn't explored. I knew it would be hot, but hoped for the best.

The pull out near mile marker 203 had one car in it when I arrived just before 7 am. There's a huge parking area there, but it was largely inaccessible with a locked gate, noting it's closed. Seems like this used to be a popular horse/ATV staging area.

Anywhoo, crossed the street and headed out on the unsigned trail, which as the description notes, is an old jeep road. Nothing too exciting for the first mile or so, except a nice d-back who was enjoying the morning in the middle of the trail. We said hello, and he politely moved off the trail since I was the uphill hiker.

The geology started to get a little more interesting descending into Rough N Ready Canyon. At the end of the canyon track, I veered off the official route and took a broader, alternate route back. While in the canyon area, the geology remained interesting. There was a nice "bowl" area that I marked on my route.

Lots of side trails for mountain bikers and motorcycles. I took a few, as they promised clearer travelling than staying in the drainage, but in many cases, they involved a lot of climbing up and down, before depositing you back in the drainage anyway. Saw a couple of deer in this area.

The final few miles, the trail opened up and was a little blah, except providing nice views of the Supes, Flatiron, and Weaver's Needle. It was also getting hot.

Got a decent workout, but as with a lot of my Goldfield hikes, I have a hard time getting too excited. They tend to be just OK for the most part. Maybe I haven't done enough research, but for you true Goldfield lovers out there, what trails get you excited in this area?

My week to pick, I threw out four different possibilities, and both of my co-hikers chose this option.

It was chilly for the first hundred yards, perfect on the way to the target, and then warmed up with no clouds and little breeze on the return. There was a little mud here and there, which was easily skirted by two of us.

I enjoy the geology out here; I find it different from most of that in the Supes, right across the street. We made our way out and up to the Overlook Arch. Joe took the direct route up the ridgeline, while Linda and I traversed the north slope before climbing up to the ridgeline. There were, in fact, two different arches up here, both large (not) and spectacular (not), but the geology in the area was grand.

After an early lunch up there, we made our way back, hitting different trails. I don't know how anyone keeps track of all the different trails out here. Once again, we passed through quite a few areas of interesting geology.

We arrived at a packed trailhead of ATVs, Jeeps, and horses. Luckily, I think we only passed two horses while on our loop.

Good times out there!

Two of us enjoyed this hike; one... not so much. I'll let you guess based on their triplog. If you were with us, the *itchin would have given it away five minutes into the hike (and maybe on the ride in).

Kelly and I have been wanting to hike Golden Dome for a few years now. Today was the day.
Got started before sunrise. Warmer than expected. 54 degrees at the trailhead. Much cooler in places.
The scenery here in the Goldfields is always fantastic, start to finish.
Before long we reached Pedestal Arch. Cool spot. A lot of work from there to Golden Dome. The ascent wasn't bad, only one spot that was a little exposed. Views from the top are excellent.
Descending was tedious down loose steep terrain. Going through the canyons and pools of running water was special.
Long day by the time we finished up. Great hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

john and i have had golden dome on our must do list for a few years
we decided to get up there today
got going around 0700
followed @dixieflyer's route for most of the hike
immediately scenic from milepost 204
followed a few trails that we've been on before for about 3.5 miles
off trail to our first landmark, pedestal arch, which i've seen at least three times
then the ridgeline up to golden dome saddle
we took one of the west side chutes for climb to the summit
one corner had some exposure
nice to be up top after seeing it on every goldfields hike
we took a snack/photo break and signed the register
i was a little sketched out before the descent, but it was fine
thank you for spotting me, john
we then followed the ridgeline over peak 3141
the downhill from there was slow going - steep with loose rock
the worst part of the entire hike was the drainage we followed to get over to triple arch and black glass canyon
lots of catclaw and other sticker bushes
saw the arch and dropped down the canyon
one bypass and fun downclimbing
water flowing and some deep pools
once out of the canyon, we took the road back partway, then some other trails before closing the loop
four classic goldfield landmarks on this hike
water in some of the drainages
great views from the high points
a lot of bang for the buck
it's not easy with all the off trail
we had a good day for it
copied linkage since i still have no idea what trails we were on
thanks lp! this was a good one :)

We only did a little section of this hike. Basically just wondering around the Goldfields. Another great day for hiking.

Did a derivative of this, adding on Triple Arch for a nice lollipop loop. Saw merely a lone hiker and 4 horse-persons the whole day. Still water in most potholes.
Gotta love the Goldfields!

angela and i had planned a hike in the goldfields before i get to start working weekends
we did little or no research
i just pulled @rayhuston's track from a hike he did earlier this year
set out from the horse lot around 0830
breezy, cool temps at first
getting to the good stuff in the goldfields often requires a couple miles of walking on rocky horse trails
these seemed worse than i remembered, torn up by horse traffic
to be expected starting at the horse lot, and we will pick another trailhead next time
while we were following ray's track, we took a few wrong turns not paying attention and ended up with some extra credit
we saw crystal quartz arroyo, hiked on some nice slickrock, revisited anniversary arch, and had close up views of several landmarks: golden eye arch, helmet rock, razorback knob, the razorback
in the background was golden dome, which is still on my list
nice to be back in the goldfields, and nice to hike with angela again
feel like i'm starting over on getting to know this area
good winter destination and fun to explore unfamiliar territory
nice day and even double digits thanks to wandering around
dinner at los gringos locos afterwards
thanks, angela! will add links when you figure out what they are

Kelly and I are way overdue for a hike. Kelly picked @rayhuston's route from Feb 2021 [ RS Mapped triplog ] which we copied except for his far northern loop. We met at the TH around 8:15 (and you know me, I asked for 9  ) . And just like the chickens, we crossed the road to get to the other side 😏 to start hiking.

The first part of the hike on the Javelina Mine Trail, once you got into the foothills, was very rough as the horses have really torn it up making it very rocky. It is no fun. I reviewed my previous trip reports from the area and I didn't complain about the trail, so I think this rockiness is new. We did see quite a bit of horse traffic on this hike; more than I've ever seen out in the Goldfields. We also some areas where they were likely trimming from their horses based on the branch cuts and the branches would be laying all over the trail.

We were glad to get past the section that took us, eventually, to the southern end of the Quartz Crystal Arroyo which is one of the best views in the Goldfields, both coming and going; which we ended up doing as we missed our turn to the Golden Eye Mine Trail. But if you have to backtrack 1/2 mile, this trail is not a bad choice; we didn't complain.

Once on the Golden Eye Mine Trail I recalled being on it before. It was also pretty torn up in places and some of the dips were steep and slippery. We did notice some big bike tire tracks too. Once we gratefully leveled out, the trail was in a little better shape. Kelly happened? to look left and saw the Golden Eyes arches so we grabbed a couple pictures. Not far from here is the Willow Springs Tank Basin area, we didn't see a tank. You also cross what appears to have been an old road.

Further up we entered into the wash/road and a tour of jeeps passed us by... very nice jeeps. We missed our turn out of the wash so ended up backtracking again; a theme for our day at times. From here we headed WNW crossing over new territory and nearing a rock formation we had been seeing from a distance. We had great views to the Four Peaks as well. We once again got to enjoy some bedrock hiking toward the north end of this loop using the Rough N Ready Willow Springs Crossover Trail.

We opted not to do Ray's exploration loop and instead continued following the track which eventually does a bit of a u-turn... a little hard here to see the trail as you cross a slightly steep mini-wash and then turn left (south) onto the Rough N Ready Canyon Trail. We lost the trail and ended up walking in the wash and came to a fairly deep pool of water that we had to get around. We think the trail was to the left (west) that we missed. As we walked in the wash we did eventually find the trail again.

We passed by some pretty cool geology along the way, in particular the white striping in the golden tuff. We crossed over the wash a couple times and at one corner saw 4 horseback riders. As I looked up I saw a deep brown jagged rock formation shooting up from the ground and I recognized that as the north end of the Quartz Crystal Arroyo. We decided the little water pond here would make a good stop for a snack.

After a quick picture of the Arroyo we continued on the Rough N Ready Canyon Trail but detoured west to do the Anniversary Arch Loop. We both had done this before altho Kelly had not done it via this direction. I had done this angle in 2019. It's a nice little gradual climb to the saddle where you turn left (south) and once again, we did the same thing where it looks like the trail goes slightly left but it actually goes up over the bedrock (I made this same error in 2019).

And not to be outdone, the trail goes to the right but if you want to see the Anniversary Arch (guess it's also called Dragon Eye Arch which seems like a better name), you need to stay high so we backtracked once again  . Kelly went up to the Arch and I stayed low to take her picture; she got a really nice one I think. From here you amble down and around a slightly rocky trail (yes, the horses use this one too) to meet back up with the junction of the Rough N Ready Canyon Trail that you take south, in and out of the wash to intersect back with the road. You do pass by some high golden grasses which light up the sides of the hills this time of year. And, of course, you have a nice view to the Superstition Ridgeline and Weavers Needle.

We had a heck of a time keeping on the trails so to avoid wash walking, you may have to look around, there's trail for the most part. Kelly got her double digits and this ended up being my longest hike of the year. Ironically, the last longest hike I've done, 15.43 miles was in the Goldfields with Kelly back in 2015. I was pretty tired as it had started to warm up pretty good those last couple miles and some of the terrain was a little rougher than I'm used to hiking. It was nice to have the breeze from time to time. We had our beer before heading to Los Gringos for Pablano Chicken Enchiladas.

FYI: here is the link to the named trails out there by the bike riding community https://www.trailforks.com/region/goldf ... -111.48512
And don't be sad, we were hiking fairly fast for me and the terrain was pretty rough so no video :o .

WATCH: 9.8 miles (1738 low, 2227 high points) 133 avg bpm, 168 max (40% at max, 32% level 4, 22% level 3) burning 2102 calories. Starting temp 51.9 and 51% humidity (didn't seem that high) finishing at 1:41PM

I missed last week and haven't done much of anything for a couple of weeks so I was looking at something with a few miles but not too taxing. This was the ticket.

This was a nice long meander in the desert. Easy going throughout with some nice views along the way. I deviated slightly from this guide, adding Willow Springs Tank and the RnR Willow Springs Crossover trails to make a longer loop. I also added the Anniversary Arch Loop, which I had hiked with @CannondaleKid a few years ago, and which I found just as enjoyable on this trip.

I saw just four other hikers on the day, most near the trailhead. The weather was perfect while I was out there (12:30 to 4:30). This hike was most enjoyable and not difficult, but I underestimated the effect of 20,000 plus steps in a remote area. I was whooped at the end and sore the next day. Good day to be out though.

Did the rugged lasso route posted by @chumley on 1-12-2019, went clockwise. Pedestal Arch is a cool place and Golden Dome is a very impressive piece of rock, summited / back down via the east end prow - one committing 4th class move on mostly solid rock. Then some very fun canyoneering on the way back after Peak 3141. Lots of isolated pools with clear water in many of the drainages but nothing flowing.

I have never been out to the Goldfields before and I didnt feel like going to another I-17 party this weekend. Was not overly impressed with the area, until I saw a 500 ft cliffside that looked like a mini Battleship Mnt wanting to be climbed. I took an approach from the NW and made it up with just a little scrambling - no problem. There was a small rock pile up there and looks like you could go up and down the whole ridgeline up top. I only went to 2 different points and then came back down and continued on. The trail was very easy to follow the whole way with next to nothing elevation gain wise. After I got to Willow Springs Basin Tank, I decided to make a loop with Rough n Ready Canyon which was a lot of uncomfortable sand walking, but after a while it goes into a really cool area with a lot of close up rock formations. Very secluded back there, it was a little creepy. Also I wish I was in a Jeep instead. Spotted lots of tiny pieces of tire, reflectors, scrape marks, and other random car parts. Also saw a spot where someone rolled and there was window glass everywhere. After wearing the same model of shoes for like 6 years, I thought I would 'upgrade' to some new Newbies and they weren't working out too well, so I decided to ditch the sand walking and cut across back over to Willow Springs Canyon. The crosscut trail reminded me of Bull Pass area in the Supes. Might be a while until I come back out here.

Despite the drive, I really want to make the Goldfields a semi regular destination. It's incredibly beautiful out there with numerous designated hikes which I have yet to do. :o The start didn't go as I envisioned. Got out there around 5:30 which was a tad earlier than I wanted to start, so I cat-napped for half hour. When 6:00 am came around I was ready to start my hike, so I opened my car door and........set off my car alarm.......twice. I had planned on starting form the Horse Trails TH, but there were quite a few campers and RVers there and I thought my "6am wake up call" was probably not appreciated and that it might be prudent to start my hike elsewhere, less my car get TP'ed while I was gone. So drive on down to Willow Canyon TH instead.

I am somewhat familiar with the "fringe" trails/hikes that are nearest to route 88 so knew where and how to get to where I wanted to start my hike of the Rough Eye. I made way over, first in darkness (no headlamp needed) and then in the early morning light. These trails are pretty well established and easy to follow (though, there are branches to the trails that can lead you astray if you are not familiar with the area). I was surprised to discover that parts of the trail were still muddy from rains more than a week past. It was kind of cool, during this early part I was able to several "shooting stars" from the Gemini Meteor shower. It took me a little over 2 miles to get to where, in my mind, the Rough Eye started - where the trail for hike turned from a dirt road to a single track, if I had started from the Horse Trail TH like I had planned.

I quickly discovered that staying on trail was one thing (easy), but staying on the correct trail was something else. Like I said, some of the main trails out here are pretty well established, but they are not signed and there can be multiple options, especially at the junctures. Luckily I had downloaded the "official route" which helped helped me at those junctures where the trail split. The first such split was less than .5 miles (I didn't look at my garmin, but I would guess around .3 miles) from the aforementioned description in the above paragraph. There were several splits in the trail and I was mentally thinking I needed to stay on the westward trail, when in fact the downloaded route had me turning right in a more northerly direction. After that the trail quickly met up with a wash and then bounced in and out of it for a couple of miles. It was easy enough to follow, though there were several branches in the trail as I made my way north and it was nice to confirm which route was the Rough Eye. I did notice as I was verifying my progress, that my location on the garmin seemed to be a shade off of the official route and this "shadowing" happened with multiple "garmin checks". I am not sure if this was a flaw with the Garmin and satellites not being in synch (there was a meteor shower occurring :) ) or if the hiker of the original downloaded route stayed more in the wash as they proceeded north. This deviation became more apparent as I was doing the second "smaller loop." I pretty much stayed on the established trail as I did the smaller loop. However, to "close/complete" the smaller loop, I did have to leave the trail and trek through the brush to hook up with where I started the loop. By doing this I left a very solid trail that was heading east, which surprisingly I am not seeing as a designated route on HAZ.

Once I closed the small loop and started retracing my steps I did deliberately deviate slightly from the official route. There turned out to be a secondary option (another trail) that allowed me to rejoin the bigger loop. It was another case where you have a "main juncture" with several options that lead to the same trail. I find it incredibly satisfying to see how these trails come together....I know OCD. The rest of the loop was very easy to complete and much shorter than I anticipated. It turned out that a good portion of my initial hike on the "fringe" trails was actually part of the Rough Eye Javelina Loop, so my completion of the big loop occurred much earlier than I thought it might.

This was a very beautiful hike. The rock work was incredible, especially as you go from big loop to small loop. The trail was very easy to follow (excluding the bushwack) as long as you know which trail to follow. I didn't see any wildlife, but I did see 10 hikers while out there, one being HAZ member hikerdw. Long drive to get out here, but definitely worth it.

A pleasant day of hiking on trails and washes in the vicinity of the Rte 88 MP 204 trailhead. Lots of water, saw one other hiker and one ORV.

I'd had dixieflyer's GPS track in my "to do" folder for some time and Nov 22 was the day for it. I was on the trail before sunrise at 6:15 am and ended up taking twelve hours and returning to the trailhead at 6 pm in the dark. I like to take my time and look around and I move fairly deliberately when rock/boulder hopping. I chose to do the hike counterclockwise which probably was not a good decision. I think going clockwise is probably a bit easier in the long run. Due to the large amounts of water in Black Glass Canyon up from the Jeep wash, the going was slow as I had to go around areas one could normally hike in. The arches were spectacular, the summits had outstanding views, and route was difficult with some fun bushwhacking. It was nice to be on a trail when it got dark. Exactly 0.0 people and 0.0 ORVs were encountered on this hike. I will upload the gpx file soon, but it's pretty much identical to dixieflyer's. With the heavy rains earlier in the week, there was lots of water everywhere.

With the Steeler bye week and cooler weather, I had an oppurtunity for a bonus hike with the family. I looked on the HAZ map for hikes in this area and found this. I never knew these were here. I was very pleasantly surprised at how easy the trails were to follow and how nice the scenery is back here. Found quite a few spurs along the way so there's plenty more to explore here. We did the loop counter clockwise, heading up the wash first and walking back through the grassland. We skipped the connector trail in the middle of the loop. The views up into the Goldfields to the northwest were the best with the morning lighting. Evening light might give some better views of Superstition Mountain.

1st trip
Tracie, my intrepid hiking partner, had been wanting to go hike Black Glass Canyon, so we decided to go hike in the canyon and also check out a couple of peaks and a couple of arches.

I had seen a triplog and a GPS track that Chumley posted last month in which he climbed up Golden Dome and Peak 3141, so we decided to bag those as well. Along the way we also went to Pedestal Arch and viewed Triple Arch while in Black Glass Canyon.

We started and ended the hike at the Willow Canyon TH, which is at mile marker 204 on Highway 88. It was my first time to this TH.

The hike started out easy enough, but after 3 miles or so it became a total off-trail cross country bushwhack/scramble.

Our first stop was at Pedestal Arch, which was neat to see. We eventually made our way to Golden Dome, and climbed up it via the short chute that Chumley went up on the NW side of the Dome -- he picked a good route up. The views atop the Dome were really nice -- much better than being on Dome Mountain, the high point in the Goldfields. We descended the summit the same way that we came up, and then went over to Peak 3141. The climb up was easy, but the descent down the east side was steep and very slow going...but we eventually made our way down, and went over to Black Glass Canyon. I enjoyed the canyon, although there were a few tricky descents. While in the canyon we were able to see Triple Arch, although we didn't feel like climbing up to the arch. Once we got out of Black Glass Canyon, we started back in Rough-N-Rowdy Canyon and took a look at a few caves that were there.

After climbing these 2 peaks, I have now climbed atop 11 of the 17 highest peaks in the Goldfields. Maybe I will get the other 6 someday.

Before going up to Golden Dome, I briefly thought about checking out Tuff Dome. It might be a doable climb, but it looked pretty steep from a distance.

We didn't see any wildlife on the hike, but didn't see any other humans either. I guess that 1 out of 2 ain't bad!
