Casey and I began the Groom Creek Loop Trail #307 in a clockwise fashion. The windy day made the low-seventy degree temps feel amazing. As we climbed the steady and gradual 3.5 miles to the Spruce Lookout Tower, we saw a handful of mountain bikers, a few hikers, and a half dozen people on horseback. This trail is in very nice shape and extremely well signed. We were welcomed into the fire lookout tower by a very friendly "Suzie". First time for me and I enjoyed the 360 degree views. The remaining 6 miles of the loop wound downhill gradually amidst the douglas firs and the ponderosa pines. Lovely day hike in the Groom Creek area.

Gorgeous hike with Kelly (good to meet you!) and Linda. So many great spots along this trail but the highlights for me include Wilderness of Rocks and Marshall Gulch. Mount Lemmon is a stunner, wish it was closer so I could hike it more often.

Sweet hike with my little girls. They love this hike and swimming in Oak Creek. Perfect temps, tons of Memorial Day people as expected.

Been out of the game for a minute, this hike was my first long day-hike in a while. The gorgeous 360 degree views from the peak did not disappoint and I returned home feeling invigorated. The figure 8 loop we did was scenic and I enjoyed the longer, more gradual climb up the mountain, starting from the Super Trail. We saw a turkey, 6 or so deer, lizards, squirrels, a bluebird, and swarms of ladybugs. Not to mention, quite a few people on the trail today. Great hike, loved this mountain.

Linda asked if I wanted to switch up our usual night hiking routine by giving Mt. Ord a chance at twilight. We started around 6:20pm and climbed as we watched the sun slip away beyond the horizon. Near the top of Ord around 9:30 or so, we finally caught first sight of the full moon. It made for a breathtaking luminescent finish at the peak. Views of the city lights were impressive. It was windy at the top and fairly breezy throughout the entire evening. Perfect temps the entire night. Centipedes and scorpions graced the trail, as well as quite a few deer, and a rabbit. We finished around 12:20pm and made it home with a few hours of nighttime sleep to spare. Great night hike.

Casey and I headed to Northwest Sedona to enjoy the gorgeous weather and the other various pleasantries of the red rocks. We opted for a leisurely Saturday, parked at the Mescal Trailhead around 10am without any issues, found a great parking spot right away. We took the Mescal trail to Long Canyon trail, then let Chuckwagon lead us to Devil's Bridge. Along the nature walk that is Chuckwagon, we saw about a dozen mountain bikers, not many hikers. Devil's Bridge fulfilled our longing for scenic vistas and it offered an interested people watching experience as well. We hung around the bridge to wait in line for our photo to be taken and chatted with a few people before heading back to the Mescal TH via Chuckwagon. As we finished our hike, the cloud cover and cool breeze made the hiking conditions ideal. I've said it before and I will say it again, I absolutely love the Red Rock Wilderness on an overcast day.

My family and I explored White Sands National Monument over Spring Break last week. Let's just say that I found the 275 square miles of white gypsum located in the middle of the desert to be fascinating. The sand was very cool to the touch and my children ran barefoot over the dunes and made delightful sand angels. The day was quite warm last Thursday, reaching over 80 degrees by midday. My family decided to leave me to it to hike and explore the white sands further. I took the backcountry route, clearly marked and easy to follow. Throughout the hike I definitely felt the intensity of the heat and sun on the reflective white sands. I would love to return to this majestic place for a moonlit hike or quick backpacking adventure.

No wildlife to report other than beetle tracks in the sand.

My family camped at the Aquirre Springs Campground, just east of Las Cruces in Organ, New Mexico. It was close to dusk when my girls got the bug to explore the nearest hiking trail. This is a beautiful scenic route overlooking the valleys and desert below the Organ mountains. There were small patches of snow still nestled in the rocks near the top of the mountain and there was plenty of water run-off and streams to cross along the trail. We had to cut the hike short (turned around halfway) as twilight approached and my youngest daughter wasn't prepared to complete the entire loop. Beautiful piece of country.

Stephanie and I started at the Bursera Trailhead and hiked our way east to the end of National. Took Pima Canyon Road to the trailhead where Stephanie met her family. I walked to my house. Sunny day and quite a few hikers and bikers out today enjoying South Mountain. It was nice to run into @Tortoise_Hiker near Buena Vista parking lot and to meet his grandkids. Lots of laughter along this hike and a great way to begin Superbowl Sunday.

I considered naming this triplog "The Kamikaze Hike" but decided to keep the name of this route as chosen by Linda, because it is accurate in every sense of the word. It was a gorgeous day for this adventure, cool temps (in the low fifties when we began at 0830), several sprinkles, and the occasional presence of a dark, menacing storm cloud to push our pace. The trail up to Quartz Peak was pleasant, the trek over to Butterfly Peak was a bit more strenuous as we navigated steep areas with loose rock and soft soil. The descent down the drainage/wash in between the peaks is where the hours in our day seemed to vanish in a time warp. Traversing the boulders and steep grade was intense yet a lot of fun. We were racing the daylight hours toward the end and luckily made it back to the car just as the sun set since we did not have our headlamps. I really enjoyed this adventure and look forward to more exploring in the beautiful Sierra Estrellas. My only complaint is that it is too bad we have drive all the way around town to access the trailhead. From the top of Quartz Peak we could spot Linda's neighborhood, a mere seven miles away.........

This morning I met up with Daniela and another friend, Penny, at Warpaint to hike the Corona Loop on SoMo. Desert Classic to Old Man, National to connect with Corona. This is a fun loop with gorgeous views of Phoenix and Ahwatukee. Nothing out of the ordinary to report, just some ladies trekking in the desert.

With a couple hours to myself, I decided to make a break for the Bursera trailhead around mid-morning. Gorgeous, cool, sunny weather as I made my way to the top of Pyramid and back. Very windy up top, still stopped for a few yoga poses and chatted with a gentleman that hikes Pyramid up and down 4 times in a row, every Friday. As to be expected on the urban park trails, I saw about two dozen people while I was out. Several singing birds but not much else in the way of desert wildlife. Great hike on this side of town.

Ended the year with a fantastic hike in the Cave Creek Wilderness Area. Linda used Bifrost's recent route on the way up to Skull Mesa and we enjoyed the trail. The rain and dark ominous clouds made the desert landscape appear even more gorgeous with color pops of bright greens and purple rocks. The rain made for soggy trail sloshing in some parts but the volcanic rocks along the Skull Mesa were not too slick. I did not actually see Skull Mesa itself during our entire hike or at any point throughout the day. The fog was thick at the junction of Cottonwood Trail and Skull Mesa, and it continued to intensify as we ascended. Our views at the top of Skull Mesa were limited to about 50 feet. Rain and fog atop of Skull Mesa made for a mystical and surreal experience, I felt like it was something out of Game of Thrones. Linda and I captured some cool photos and decided we must make this trek again on a clear day for an opportunity to take in the vast scenic views that we have heard about and seen in other documented trip photos.

Cheers to looking forward to many more great adventures in 2017. Happy New Year to all!
