Another AZT section. I didn't pay much attention to the AEG and thought it was more of a ridge hike. It started as a ridge hike and then it went down, down, down.

I started out following Andy and taking it easy. We missed turn near Bigelow Mountain and Chris took the lead going down. We paused at an up segment I took off to the turnaround point.

We stopped to eat near Crystal Springs and the clouds came with a breeze so it was cool for a while. I took the lead on the way back and the up section wasn't as bad as I thought. Once I reached the saddle I decided to hike up to the towers on Bigelow Mountain and add some more AEG.

After coming down from the summit I wasn't sure if I was still ahead or behind so I just continued on. There were several hikers/campers out on Incinerator Ridge. The final leg from parking area to parking area I still stayed on the trail. I passed the one turn but only for 100 yards.

I got back to the lot and waited a few minutes before Chris returned. The search for Andy commenced shortly after and we finally got to him off Incinerator Ridge road. One and done.

This hike was a continuation of dayhiking AZT Passage 11E, Pusch Ridge Wilderness bypass. It was an out and back on the Incinerator Ridge and Butterfly Trails starting from the Upper Green Mountain TH.

Wally, Andy, and I got started from the Upper Green Mountain TH just after 7am. After a half mile of hiking and gaining a few hundred feet, you end up walking past the next parking lot which is barely a quarter mile up the road. I checked my old GPS tracks later and I had already hiked this portion of the trail, so we could have started at the next lot and saved some time.

Incinerator Ridge Trail has a steep climb, then levels out a bit. It seemed cool at first in the shade, but as soon as we were walking uphill in the sun, it got warm very fast. The elevation is around 8000', so the uphills were even harder at our advanced ages. As we got to the junction with the Butterfly Trail, a group of bikers was coming the other way. They passed Wally and Andy right at the junction, so the missed it and started heading up to Mount Bigelow and it's towers. As I got to the junction, I checked my GPS and saw they were heading the wrong way. I yelled three times and they still kept walking up. Finally I had to scream at the top of my lungs, at which point they both turned around wondering what my problem was.

From the junction with the Butterfly Trail at the saddle, it immediately heads downhill. The trail at first is very smooth, but then gets narrow, rocky, and even a bit overgrown. I think some AZT maintenance was just recently done on this passage, so the smooth part at the beginning looks like it might have been that.

The trail keeps going down at a steep clip. It passes the junction with Davis Spring Trail, then goes downhill some more before a brutal climb up a few hundred feet before leveling out a little bit before it ends at the next junction. I was ahead of Andy and Wally until the uphill portion, then Wally took over.
Andy showed up last and said that his hip was beginning to bother him. By the time we got to the end, it took 3.5 hours and we were pretty tired. We knew that hike back up to Mount Bigelow was going to be a slog.

On the way up we began to see more foot traffic on the trails. Two guys passed me and told me they saw Andy when I asked them and he seemed ok. Just below Mount Bigelow a couple was walking the other way and the guy told me they were looking for an old plane crash from the 60's, which he had the coordinates for. It was a lot of work getting back up to saddle getting all that elevation back, but I was getting used to the lighter air and was getting a bit of a 2nd wind.

The level part of Incinerator Ridge was nice, then the descent was a slog again. Steep and rocky with stiff legs isn't much fun. Once I got to the 2nd parking lot, I decided to just walk the road back to where we parked, which saved me 20 minutes easy.

Wally said Andy texted him saying his hip was really bad and he needed us to pick him up by Mount Bigelow, or something like that. there was some confusion as to where he was and wanted to meet. We ended up taking the wrong road and couldn't find him, and cell coverage was spotty. We finally went up the correct road and found him walking downhill on it, just as he had arrived. So it worked out as we would have been early and waiting for him anyway. Looks like he's going to need his hip checked out and reevaluate his hiking habits.

Long day on some rugged trails, but a day very well spent. Hoping the best for Andy's recovery and journey into elder care.

Finishing off the core remainder of this fairly monotonous passage after hiking the south and north sections a few days ago. There are so many other AZT passages that are more challenging and scenic than this one, unless buggy and noisy Spruce Alpine Shinrin-yoku is your thing.

A nice day, well-spent 'living' with Rowdy & Widowmaker. Perhaps sometime soon we can tick off some of the other southern AZT passages. :-s

Started off a week long trip at the North Rim with my wife, eventually meeting up with my Dad, two brothers and the Desperados to finish off the week camping. Completed this mellow loop solo on the seventh day. Beautiful canyon!

Jamie and I stationed our cars at GC fire tower and in Tusayan and picked up litter along this small section of the AZ Trail.
Actually not a lot of trash but it was a beautiful spring day!
Some wildflowers poking through.
Not too windy. Nice and warm out but not yet our version of "hot" (hot in Northern AZ is like...80?)

This section of the AZT is extremely easy to follow. There is one spot where we kept going straight for a spell before we realized the footprints were all gone  so we turned back, found true trail and kept going.

Treated ourselves to WE Cook Pizza & Pasta post hike, met up some friends for hot tub afterward.

It's rough life y'all, but someone has to do it. 8)

On the weekend of March 19-20, I hiked Passage 1 of the AZT, from Montezuma Pass south to the border, then north to Parker Canyon Lake. My lovely wife and her friend dropped me off at the pass, and they were still there when I returned a couple of hours later. They had walked up Coronado peak, and when they got back, the parking lot was closed off to clear a space for a helicopter to land as part of a rescue operation.

I continued on north, climbing to the summit of Miller Peak, and then hiking on just a little beyond Bathtub Spring to camp just before dark. I camped in the lee of the ridge, but the wind was really noisy, and coupled with the high elevation, I did not sleep well.

Sunday morning, I got up at dawn and discovered how difficult it is to light an alcohol stove at 38 degrees. Got it going, got my breakfast, and continued on to the lake.

Overall, the trail is in great shape. Just a few trees down in Sunnyside Canyon and just above. Access to both trailheads is easy by car. There were some tiny snow patches in the shady north facing slopes near Miller Peak, but nothing even remotely difficult. There might be a little more now. The weather came in just as I got to Parker Canyon Lake, and left at least a dusting of snow at higher elevations.

Compared to all the Sonoran desert I have been haunting lately, this area was a pleasure to visit. Lots of oaks, Douglas Fir, Ponderosa Pine, and Junipers made for a nice forest at the higher elevation. On the other hand, going uphill above 7000’ is always a challenge for this old guy.

We did pretty well hitting our rendezvous time at the marina. I was 10 minutes early and my wife was 25 minutes early.

What an awesome hike! Loved this today. Wanted to get in a good hike with views with my buddy Jason, and get out of the desert heat. So many fires burning so many good ranges, feel like options are limited these days. Remembered the Huachucas from doing Arizona Trail segment 1, so glad I did. Amazing views, birds chirping all over the place, and the fresh smell of pine in many places. Honestly I think this is one of my favorite ranges in the state. There were a couple of spots where we saw vestiges of illegal activity…oddly places pieces of clothing that upon closer looks revealed unofficial trails, and empty Mexican electrolyte bottles, but not too bad.

Ramsey Vista campground is so nice in that you start hiking at 7200 feet, so no hiking down to lower elevations in the heat of the day. Did the loop clockwise which was a good choice, though there were some warm, exposed spots near the end that were a little toasty even at 7000 ft.

Carr Peak is totally bare and exposed, unreal views. So much of this loop has incredible views, as you get a 360 view from beginning to end.

Surprised by how the AZT was almost totally unmarked in the section we did, especially with all the trails it crosses in that section.

Also surprised that we didn’t run into a single hiker the entire day. Granted it was a Friday, but still! This time of year?! With the limited options we have around Tucson?

Chris asked if I wanted to join him on a hike on the Arnett Canyon segment of the LOST, with a little more exploring. I said sure. This area is really interesting, with the contrast of desert and riparian zones.

We started off from the Picketpost Trailhead and opted to take the trail on the eastside of the lot, not the AZT. I have gone into Arnett Canyon before, but never from this side. I have to say it's a real beautiful area. The trail going through Arnett Canyon is easy to follow and does not present any difficult sections.

We made to to the "turn off" where the LOST segment goes north towards the Perlite Road, but we opted to go down the canyon a little further with the idea of exploring Telegraph Canyon. I have been in there before and found it very nice as well.

We made it around the southern side of Picketpost to road and rather than go back the way we came, it was agreed upon to make our way over to the AZT and complete the loop around the mountain. A little hike up the road and then a well marked and well worn trail over to the AZT. From there it's a straight shot (with some zig-zags, of course) to the trailhead. Chris wanted to get in at least 10 miles so rather than take the AZT back all the way, we took the short bypass trail that goes back into Arnett Canyon. From there, we got back on the LOST and made our way to the trailhead and completed the loop.

The scenery around this mountain is as scenic as the mountain itself. I really enjoyed Arnett Canyon, with the cool cliffs and beautiful trees. The rest of the loop is also very nice with different types of landscapes to enjoy with the ever present and ever changing mountain view.

The weather was actually cool at the start in the shadows and in the Arnett Canyon. It got a little warmer the further we made it around, but nothing too toasty. Thanks for the invite, Chris! An awesome hike for sure.

Decided it was time to pick up and deliver some mail today, you know that neither rain nor snow nor 2,000 foot climb will stop the mail delivery. Apparently a 13 mile hike the day before doesn’t slow down the mail either as Linda dragged the mailbag and myself in a respectable 1:35 to the summit. Unfortunately my stimulus check was not in box yet, mailed our letters and briefly enjoyed the views and then Linda being a good partner joined me in visiting the North end peak as I wanted to show her where I used to operate the heliograph site back in the day :D Headed off toward a lone Saguaro near the eastern drop off , I tried to find the least scratchy path, I’d like to say it was a nice walk through blooming wildflowers but I’m not able to say that. In fact there were tons of land mines of camoflaged pin cushion cactus to step around. Once there I enjoyed viewing the cliffs along the edge on this mountain always looked to me like someone stacked rocks to make the cliffs until they ran out. Came across a nice campsite with a fire pit and grill included. On reaching the north end had a twilight zone moment as there is a canister labelled as containing the cremains of someone , I had seen it before but the last time I was here it was missing so now it’s back :o .We took a snack break here well away from the restless spirit “urn” while overlooking the views of the Superstition Wilderness, old Pinal City, Arboretum , Queen Creek and Superior. Not sure why but I was allowed a longer than typical break, dished out a few dad jokes to make sure someone’s eye roll muscles got a workout too,at least I think their funny. Linda picked the descent slides to go down while dodging rocks I was kicking down at her ,at least I didn’t roll into her , I did manage one graceful slip up once down to the flat part  . Afterwards I had the idea about going into Superior to get a Cuban sandwich luckily Linda had declined ,something about meeting the school bus , of course then I found out the sandwiches are only available on Saturdays :( . Decided to get gas too which wasn’t particularly cheap at $2.99 a gallon. At least it was a great hiking day with awesome company!

Decided on a short hike to finish before the afternoon heat kicked in , it’s short but mighty. Fortunately the western approach is shaded in the am , I’ve hiked this in varying weather even light snow before but this is the warmest day I’ve been here. It was a hike of solitude today, two cars and no people in the lot when I arrived about 0800 , saw no one else all morning until on the way back coming down the last steep portion ,with the trailhead in sight, a group of four youths on their way up. There appears to be a new black mailbox, for those keeping track it was bright red earlier this year, before that burnt orange and before that dull red , now not attached to any post or rock and no bench around, peeked in to verify no ballots were dropped there, didn’t sign in today. There was a breeze on the summit but also full sun without much shade. As usual great views all around , Four Peaks,Superstition Mt,Weavers Needle, the Catalinas,Picacho Peak ,Apache leap among those I recognized, a bit hazy but even could make out downtown Phoenix and Camelback to the west. Managed to make it up in a bit less than 2 hours but cautiously slower on the way down more so with no other hikers around typically find this trail frequently pulls the rug out from under me :D Noted the addition of a red arrow painted route, it does lead up imho the preferred way up the left bank of the wash instead of dropping into it. After leaving the summit I didn’t take a lap around the top but headed near the northeast edge before heading down, had been told the helograph site had been located there, only could see what looks like the collapsed remains of an old radio transmitter. Too hot to attempt any of the circumference today, presume Arnett Creek is pretty dry, prefer to check it after we get some rain.
